The contribution of botanic gardens to ex situ conservation through seed banking

Target 8 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation calls for 'at least 75 per cent of threatened plant species in ex situ collections, preferably in the country of origin, and at least 20 per cent available for recovery and restoration programmes by 2020'.Botanic gardens make a significant contribution to ex situ conservation of wild species with more than a third of plant species represented in botanic gardens collections. These collections are a combination of living collection and seed banked material. Seed banking can provide an efficient form of conservation for wild plant genetic *** from Botanic Gardens Conservation International's(BGCI) databases(GardenSearch,PlantSearch, ThreatSearch and GlobalTreeSearch) has been analysed as well as survey data to report on global, regional and national seed banking *** from BGCI's databases indicates that there are at least 350 seed banking botanic gardens in 74 countries. In total 56,987 taxa have been banked including more than 9000 taxa that are threatened with extinction. 6881 tree species are stored in ex situ seed bank collections. More than half(3562) of these tree species are single country endemics and represent species from more than 166 *** study suggests that institutions are increasingly conserving plant species via seed *** the majority of species in collections that have a conservation assessment are not threatened with extinction. This disjunction between species that are threatened and those conserved in seed banks needs to be addressed. Data from BGCI's databases can be used to enable prioritisation of threatened plant species for collection and conservation in seed banks. Further recommendations for botanic gardens involved in seed conservation are presented.

Botanic Garden Collections—An Under-Utilised Resource

Botanic gardens and arboreta around the world are repositories of diverse collections of useful plants in their gardens and seed banks. However, the crop and forestry communities often overlook these collections, and so they are an underutilised resource. For example, in analysis of the ex situ conservation status of 6,941 socio-economically important plant taxa using data from forestry and crop collections, but omitted collections in botanic gardens and arboreta. In this paper, we compared the socio-economically important taxa identified by Khoury et al. from GRIN-Global World Economic Plants (WEP) with data on living and seed collections held in botanic garden and arboreta, as recorded in BGCI’s global PlantSearch and ThreatSearch datasets. This analysis produced an assessment of the proportion of these taxa that are found in botanic gardens and arboreta, the number of gardens or arboreta they are found in and what potential they have to contribute to research, conservation and sustainable use. We also compared the species conservation comprehensiveness assessments carried out by Khoury et al. with the threatened status of those species, according to the IUCN Red List and other threat assessment methodologies in order to ascertain whether threatened, useful species are well-conserved in botanic gardens. At least 6017 of the 6941 socio-economically important WEP taxa (86.7%) were currently found in the living and seed collections of botanic gardens and arboreta with 1456 taxa (21%) held in >40 collections. Khoury et al. suggested that 6748 of the WEP taxa are of either medium or high conservation priority. However, our analysis suggested that just 1153 taxa have been assessed as threatened at a national or international level. Dredged sediments are being chemically treated with phosphoric acid on an industrial *** effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated by performing the chemical reaction in a tubular reactor, followed by convective drying and maturation of the treated sediment at ambient temperature and finally thermal destruction of the organic matter by calcinations(500℃-900℃).The influence of acid concentration and calcination temperature on the specific surface area of the sediment was investigated. The stabilization of the heavy metals was evaluated by leaching tests and sequential extraction *** phosphoric acid treatment is effective in reducing heavy metal mobility,a prerequisite for recycling the sediments in various construction materials.

Background:The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene mutation identification is being used with increased frequency to aid in the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) in those suspected with *** of this study was to identify diagnostic outcomes when CFTR mutational analysis was used in CF *** mutational analysis results were also compared with sweat chloride ***:This study was done on all patients at our institution who had CFTR mutation analysis over a sevenyear period since August ***:A total of 315 patients underwent CFTR mutational ***-one (16.2%) patients had two mutations *** them 32 had positive sweat chloride levels (≥60 mmol/L),while seven had borderline sweat chloride levels (40-59 mmol/L).An additional 70 patients (22.3%) had only one mutation *** them eight had positive sweat chloride levels,and 17 had borderline sweat chloride ***-five patients (17.5%) without CFTR mutations had either borderline (n=45) or positive (n=10) sweat chloride *** patients with a CF phenotype had negative CFTR analysis but elevated sweat chloride *** eighty-three patients (26.4%) CFTR mutational analysis was done without corresponding sweat chloride ***:Although CFTR mutation analysis has improved the diagnostic capability for CF,its use either as the first step or the only test to diagnose CFTR dysfunction should be discouraged and CF diagnostic guidelines need to be followed.

目的研究全髋关节置换术中使用硬膜外低压麻醉的有效性和安全性。方法对993例全髋关节置换术采用硬膜外低压麻醉(平均动脉压维持在45~55 mm Hg)。处理股骨侧髓腔之前2~3 min,静脉给予肝素10～15 U/kg。结果本组平均手术时间83 min(35~268 min),平均失血量183 ml(50~1 400 ml)。术后随访3个月,共有13例发生血栓性疾病,占总数的1.3%,其中确诊为下肢深静脉血栓(DVT)的有10例,发生率为1.0%。无心血管疾病、硬膜外血肿发生。随访期间无死亡病例。结论全髋关节置换术中使用硬膜外低压麻醉安全,术中出血少,术后血栓发生率低,术后无相关的并发症。

Background Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) affect approximately 1.5 billion people globally. The current STH control strategy is annual or twice-annual preventive chemotherapy, typically school-based deworming targeting children and women of reproductive age. Mathematical modeling suggests that it may be possible to interrupt STH transmission through high-coverage community-wide mass drug administration (cMDA). DeWorm3 is a cluster randomized trial testing cMDA for prevalence reduction and transmission interruption. The purpose of this study is to describe coverage of cMDA in study clusters over time and correlates of coverage at individual and cluster *** From 2018-2020, DeWorm3 delivered six rounds of cMDA with 400 mg albendazole at sites in Benin, India, and Malawi. We report coverage, treatment uptake, and directly observed therapy across all rounds. Factors associated with coverage at the cluster level were identified using binomial generalized estimating equations, while factors associated with non-treatment at the individual level were identified using binomial mixed-effects *** Coverage was high across all clusters and rounds, exceeding the WHO target of 75% in all sites and across all rounds (78% to 95%); cluster-level coverage tended to increase over time. Younger, unmarried, and migratory adults were more likely to be untreated at all sites; adult males were more likely to be untreated in Benin and Malawi. Among children, girls were more likely to be untreated, as were non-school-attending and migratory children. Higher adult education was associated with greater odds of non-treatment among adults, but lower odds among children in the household.
