High-pressure investigations on Piplia Kalan eucrite meteorite using in-situ X-ray diffraction and ^(57)Fe mssbauer spectroscopic technique up to 16 GPa

We report here high-pressure investigations on Piplia Kalan eucrite-a member of HED （Howardite -Eucrite-Diogenite） family from asteroid 4-Vesta based on synchrotron X-ray diffraction （up to 16 GPa） and ^57Fe mossbauer spectroscopy （up to 8 GPa）. Dominant with anorthite-rich plagioclase, pigeonite-rich pyroxene and clino-ferrosilite, the sample displayed various phase transitions attaining amorphous character at 16 GPa. These phase transitions of individual components could be explained simultaneously through variations in high-pressure XRD patterns and the mossbauer parameters. most prominent P21/c to C2/c transition of pigeonite and ferrosilite was exhibited both as sudden variation in mossbauer parameters and population inversion of Fe^2＋ in m1 and m2 sites between 2.9 and 3.8 GPa and variation in intensity profile in XRD patterns at 3.56 GPa. Anorthite seemed to respond more to such impact than other components in the sample. Complete amorphization in anorthite which occurred at lower pressure of - 12 GPa implied residual stress experienced due to shock impact. The presence of high pressure （monoclinic） phase of pigeonite and ferrosilite at ambient condition in this eucrite sample confirmed earlier suggestions of an early shock event. This report is an attempt to emphasize the role of anorthite in the determination of the residual stress due to impact process in the parent body thus to understand the behavioral differences amongst HED members.

＜正＞Single walled carbon nanotubes （SWNTs） can be viewed as tubes formed by the conformal mapping of graphite strips onto cylindrical surfaces. When stacked in bundles, these tubes form a two dimensional triangular lattice. In addition to many interesting and useful physical properties1 of SWNTs, these have been predicted to have remarkable mechanical resilience, such as reversible bending of isolated tubes to -110° 2. Recently several high pressure Raman studies have been carried out to understand the behaviour under high pressure. Based on these studies, existence of a structural phase transformation at 1.7 GPa3 and polygonization of tubes at - 2.5 GPa4 has been suggested. Another Raman investigation indicates a reversible phase transformation at 10 GPa5. To investigate the nature of structural changes under pressure, we have carried out in-situ high pressure x-ray diffraction study on SWNTs up to 13 GPa. These experiments were carried out at the SPringS synchrotron facility. Observed variation of the d-spacings as a function of pressure is shown in Fig. 1. Vanishing of the strongest and only recorded diffraction line （100） of the SWNTs show that the carbon nanotube bundles loose the triangular translational order beyond 10 GPa. However, before losing its translational coherence, the two-dimensional lattice softens substantially as is displayed by an upward jump of dioo of SWNTs in Fig. 1. This is rationalizable in terms of the formation of heterogeneous fins like structures, which may help reduce the average basal strain. These results also provide an explanation for the unusual downward jump of tangential mode of the Raman results at this pressure.5 On release of pressure, the tubes regain the triangular lattice structure. These experimental observations validate the predicted remarkable mechanical resilience of the carbon nanotubes. Clinical outcomes and prognostic significance of early *** computed tomography in acute pancreatitis

Background:Guidelines recommend that contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CT)should be carried out 72 hours after onset of an attack of acute pancreatitis(AP).However,the exact time beyond 72 hours at which CT will produce the best diagnostic yield for local complications,or whether doing a CT early in acute pancreatitis has any adverse effect on the course of disease,is not ***:The medical records of 214 consecutive patients with AP were analysed retrospectively and these patients were divided into two groups:the early CT group(CT done at 4–5 days after the onset of pain)and the late CT group(CT done in days 6–14 following onset of pain).The two groups were compared for differences in clinical outcomes and prognostic information obtained from CT,such as detection of pancreatic necrosis and local complications,and CT severity ***:Of 214 patients[143(66.8%)males;mean age 39.87613.52 years],21 patients were excluded as they did not undergo CT or CT was done more than 14 days after onset of an attack of *** early CT group included 114 patients,whilst the late CT group had *** mean CT severity index was higher in the late CT group(6.6562.27 vs.5.5262.7;P=0.005).The incidence of persistent organ failure in the early group was no different from that of the late group(38.6%vs.49.4%;P=0.143).Local complications were detected more often in the late CT group(84.8%vs.68.4%;P=0.011).There was no difference between the two groups in the need for percutaneous drainage,surgery,or mortality(all P>0.05).Conclusions:Although performing early CT does not adversely affect the outcome in AP,CT carried out more than 5 days after the onset of symptoms may detect more local complications.

Background:Walled-off pancreatic necrosis(WOPN)is an important complication of acute pancreatitis that is diagnosed by imaging modalities such as endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)or magnetic resonance imaging(mRI),which can clearly visualize necrotic *** effectiveness of abdominal ultrasound(USG)in detecting solid debris in WOPN is not ***:A total of 52 patients(37 males,mean age 38.9612.6 years)with symptomatic WOPN were prospectively studied using EUS,mRI and *** investigations were done at a mean of 11.765.5 weeks of onset of acute pancreatitis and within two ***:WOPN was detected by EUS&mRI in all patients,whereas USG could not detect it in 4(7.6%)patients(3 had predominantly solid WOPN,whereas one had air foci in WOPN).USG,mRI and EUS could detect solid debris in all patients with detectable *** and USG detectedmRI detectedmRI detected 10–40%debris in 30(58%)*** than 40%debris was better characterized on EUS and mRI with both detecting>40%debris in 8 patients(15%)compared to 5(11%)patients having>40%debris on *** detected collaterals around WOPN that were not detected on USG or ***:USG can characterize the majority of WOPN,with accuracy comparable to that of EUS/*** its limitations are the inability to detect collaterals around WOPN and characterize collections with high solid content or air.

Sequence-based genetic mapping of Ds-tagged insertions to characterize malting-related traits in barley

Among various functional genomics tools used to characterize genes in plants, transposonbased mutagenesis approaches offer great potential, especially in barley and wheat, which possess large genomes and in which genetic transformation is not routine. Two Ds transposon flanking sequences(TNPs), TNP-29(27.4 c m(centi morgan)) and TNP-79(70.3 c m), were mapped in the vicinity of a malting quality QTL located on chromosome 4H of barley. Reactivation of the Ds transposon sequence from these TNP lines led to the identification of genes in the malting QTL regions. Several Ds(dissociation) lines were generated by crossing TNP-29 and TNP-79 with an Ac TPase(activator) expressing line(25-B), and F2 progenies were subsequently screened for Ds insertions at new locations. To further characterize these Ds mutants, we mapped the new Ds flanking sequences on a barley genetic map and found that 29% of Ds were located in regions associated with the malting QTL located on chromosome 4H and in close proximity to other important malting-associated QTL across the barley chromosome. Using a sequence based approach, a linkage map was generated that confirmed the position of Ds loci in the barley genome map. Locating these Ds loci on the barley map opens avenues to dissect important malting QTL for facilitating identification of candidate malting genes.

The small intestine is an uncommon site of gastro-intestinal(GI)bleeding;however it is the commonest cause of obscure GI *** may require multiple blood transfusions,diagnostic procedures and repeated *** is the commonest cause of obscure GI bleeding,particularly in the *** lesions and tumours are the usual causes of small intestinal bleeding in younger *** endoscopy and deep enteroscopy have improved our ability to investigate small bowel *** enteroscopy has also an added advantage of therapeutic *** tomography is helpful in identifying extra-intestinal *** cases of difficult diagnosis,surgery and intra-operative enteroscopy can help with diagnosis and *** treatment is dependent upon the aetiology of the *** overt bleed requires aggressive resuscitation and immediate localisation of the lesion for institution of appropriate *** bowel bleeding can be managed by conservative,radiological,pharmacological,endoscopic and surgical methods,depending upon indications,expertise and *** patients,especially those with multiple vascular lesions,can re-bleed even after appropriate treatment and pose difficult challenge to the treating physician.

massive Hemolysis Causing Renal Failure in Acute Hepatitis E Infection

Acute viral hepatitis is usually a self-limiting ***,it can lead to complications that can be life-threatening,such as acute liver *** 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in the setting of acute viral hepatitis can lead to a massive hemolysis,manifesting as acute kidney injury and markedly raised bilirubin levels;although cases are ***,we report such a *** patient had a viral hepatitis E infection and presented with kidney injury requiring *** showed very high mixed hyperbilirubinemia due to massive intravascular *** patient experienced a long,protracted course of illness,requiring renal replacement therapy with other supportive management,which led to improvement over a period of four *** case highlights the importance of recognizing associated hemolysis in a patient with viral hepatitis who presents with very high bilirubin levels or associated kidney *** patients will require aggressive supportive care with prompt fluid and electrolyte management.

Boundary conditions for porous solids saturated with viscous fluid

Boundary conditions are derived to represent the continuity requirements at the boundaries of a porous solid saturated with viscous fluid. They are derived from the physically grounded principles with a mathematical check on the conservation of energy. The poroelastic solid is a dissipative one for the presence of viscosity in the interstitial fluid. The dissipative stresses due to the viscosity of pore-fluid are well represented in the boundary conditions. The unequal particle motions of two constituents of porous aggre~ gate at a boundary between two solids are explained in terms of the drainage of pore-fluid leading to imperfect bonding. A mathematical model is derived for the partial connec- tion of surface pores at the porous-porous interface. At this interface, the loose-contact slipping and partial pore opening/connection may dissipate a part of strain energy. A numerical example shows that, at the interface between water and oil-saturated sandstone, the modified boundary conditions do affect the energies of the waves refracting into the isotropic porous medium.
