Experimental Investigations and Theoretical Modeling Aspects in Column Studies for Removal of Cr(vI) from Aqueous Solutions Using Activated Tamarind Seeds

Continuous adsorption experiments are conducted using fixed-bed adsorption column to evaluate the performance of the adsorbent developed (from activated tamarind seeds) for the removal of Cr(vI) from aqueous solutions and the results obtained are validated with a model developed in this study. The effects of significant parameters such as flow rate, mass of adsorbent, and initial Cr(vI) concentration are studied and breakthrough curves are obtained. As the flow rate increases from 10 to 20 mL min-1, the breakthrough time decreases from 210 to 80 min. As the mass of adsorbent increases, breakthrough time gets delayed. The breakthrough times are obtained as 110, 115 and 210 min for 15, 20 and 25 g of activated tamarind seeds. As the initial Cr(vI) concentration increases from 100 to 200 mgL-1, the break point time decreases from 210 to 45 min. The process parameters for fixed-bed adsorption such as breakthrough time, total percentage removal of Cr(vI), adsorption exhaustion rate and fraction of unused bed length are calculated and the performance of fixed-bed adsorption column is analyzed. The mechanism for Cr(vI) adsorption on activated tamarind seeds is proposed. At low value of solution pH (= 1), the increase in Cr(vI) adsorption is due to the electrostatic attraction between positively charged groups of activated tamarind seeds and the HCrO4-. A mathematical model for fixed-bed adsorption column is proposed by incorporating the effect of velocity variation along the bed length in the existing model. Pore and surface diffusion models are used to describe the intra-particle mechanism for Cr(vI) adsorption. The breakthrough curve obtained theoretically from pore diffusion model and surface diffusion model are compared with experimental results for different operating conditions. The standard deviation values obtained for pore diffusion model and solid diffusion model are 0.111 and 0.214 respectively.

Management of glaucoma in pregnancy:risks or choices,a dilemma?

The treatment of glaucoma in and around pregnancy offers the unique challenge of balancing the risk of vision loss to the mother as against the potential harm to the fetus or newborn. Most anti-glaucoma drugs（***-blockers, prostaglandin analogues, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors topical and systemic, cholinergics,anticholinesterases, and apraclonidine） are considered category C agents and ophthalmologists are usually limited to treating patients with the category B drugs of brimonidine and dipivefrin. Brimonidine is generally the preferred first-line drug in the first, second and early third trimester. Late in the third trimester, brimonidine should be discontinued because it can induce central nervous system depression in newborns wherein topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors may be the optimal *** surgery can be performed with caution in second and third trimester if the patients have a strong indication for the procedure. However, anesthetics,sedative agents, and antimetabolites still have potential risk for the fetus. Argon laser trabeculoplasty（ALT） or selective laser trabeculoplasty（SLT） is an alternative treatment that can be performed in all *** anhydrase inhibitors and β-blockers are certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use during nursing. However, low doses of these medications should be considered when used in the breast feeding period. Optimum treatment for glaucoma in pregnancy must not be withheld so as to prevent any further deterioration in progressive vision loss and quality of life.

Quantification of 17-desacetyl norgestimate in human plasma by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) and its application to bioequivalence study

A rapid and sensitive ultra-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry（UPLC–MS/MS） method was developed and validated for the estimation of 17-desacetyl norgestimate in human plasma using solid-phase extraction technique. 17-desacetyl norgestimate D6 was used as the internal standard. Simple gradient chromatographic conditions and mass spectrometric detection enabled accurate and precise measurement of 17-desacetyl norgestimate at sub-picogram levels. The proposed method was validated for a linear range of 20–5000 pg/m L with a correlation coefficient Z 0.9988. The intra-run and inter-run precision and accuracy were within 10%. The overall recoveries for 17-desacetyl norgestimate and 17-desacetyl norgestimate D6 were 96.30% and 93.90%, respectively. The total run time was 4.5 min. The developed method was applied for the determination of the pharmacokinetic parameters of 17-desacetyl norgestimate following a single oral administration of a norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol0.250 mg/0.035 mg tablets in 35 healthy female volunteers.

SnS thin films deposited by chemical bath deposition, dip coating and SILAR techniques

The SnS thin films were synthesized by chemical bath deposition （CBD）, dip coating and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction （SILAR） techniques. In them, the CBD thin films were deposited at two tem- peratures： ambient and 70℃. The energy dispersive analysis of X-rays （EDAX）, X-ray diffraction （XRD）, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and optical spectroscopy techniques were used to characterize the thin films. The electrical transport properties studies on the as-deposited thin films were done by measuring the I-v characteristics, DC electrical resistivity variation with temperature and the room temperature Hall effect. The obtained results are deliberated in this paper.

We revisit the novel symmetries in N=2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical models by considering specific examples of coupled ***,we extend our analysis to a general case and list out all the novel *** each case,we show the existence of two sets of discrete symmetries that correspond to the Hodge duality operator of differential ***,we are able to provide a proof of the conjecture which points out the existence of more than one set of discrete symmetry transformations corresponding to the Hodge duality ***,we derive on-shell nilpotent symmetries for a generalized superpotential within the framework of supervariable approach.

Studies on impact sensitivity of nanosized trinitrotoluene (TNT) confined in silica processed by sol-gel method

Nano-sized trinitrotoluene(TNT) material restrained in silica gel has been prepared by using the sol-gel process to study the effect of varying porosity in gel on the sensitivity of TNT. The TNT content in the gel has been varied from 60 to 90 wt %(at fixed acetone/tetramethoxysilane ratio of 50). Also, for a fixed TNT content of 75 wt %, the pore structure in the gel has been varied by changing the ratio of silica gel precursor to the solvent. The resultant TNT–silica gel composites have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis, small angle X-ray scattering and surface area analysis techniques. Impact sensitivity studies were carried out using Fall Hammer Impact Test. The results showed that the sensitivity of nanostructured explosives prepared by sol-gel process can be tailored precisely by controlling the process parameters.

BACKGROUND The prognosis of gastric cancer continues to remain poor,and epigenetic drugs like histone deacetylase inhibitors(HDACi)have been envisaged as potential therapeutic ***,clinical trials are facing issues with toxicity and efficacy against solid tumors,which may be partly due to the lack of patient stratification for effective *** study the need of patient stratification before HDACi treatment,and the efficacy of pre-treatment of HDACi as a chemotherapeutic drug *** The expression activity of class 1 HDACs and histone acetylation was examined in human gastric cancer cells and *** potential combinatorial regime of HDACi and chemotherapy drugs was defined on the basis of observed drug binding assays,chromatin remodeling and cell *** In the present study,the data suggest that the differential increase in HDAC activity and the expression of class 1 HDACs are associated with hypoacetylation of histone proteins in tumors compared to normal adjacent mucosa tissue samples of gastric *** data highlights for the first time that pretreatment of HDACi results in an increased amount of DNA-bound drugs associated with enhanced histone acetylation,chromatin relaxation and cell cycle ***-affected plots and combination index-based analysis show that pre-HDACi chemo drug combinatorial regimes,including valproic acid with cisplatin or oxaliplatin and trichostatin A with epirubicin,exhibit synergism with maximum cytotoxic potential due to higher cell death at low combined doses in gastric cancer cell *** Expression or activity of class 1 HDACs among gastric cancer patients present an effective approach for patient ***,HDACi therapy in pretreatment regimes is more effective with chemotherapy drugs,and may aid in predicting individual patient prognosis.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a serious hazard that can result inirreversible blindness if not addressed in a timely manner. Hence, numeroustechniques have been proposed for the accurate and timely detection ofthis disease. Out of these, Deep Learning (DL) and Computer vision (Cv)methods for multiclass categorization of color fundus images diagnosed withDiabetic Retinopathy have sparked considerable attention. In this paper,we attempt to develop an extended ResNet152v2 architecture-based DeepLearning model, named ResNet2.0 to aid the timely detection of DR. TheAPTOS-2019 datasetwas used to train the model. This consists of 3662 fundusimages belonging to five different stages of DR: no DR (Class 0), mild DR(Class 1), moderate DR (Class 2), severe DR (Class 3), and proliferativeDR (Class 4). The model was gauged based on ability to detect stage-wiseDR. The images were pre-processed using negative and positive weightedGaussian-based masks as feature engineering to further enhance the qualityof the fundus images by removing the noise and normalizing the images. Upsamplingand data augmentation methods were used to address the skewnessof the original dataset. The proposed model achieved an overall accuracyof 91% and an area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC)score of 95.1%, outperforming existing Deep Learning models by around 10%.Furthermore, the class-wise F1 score for No DR was 92%, Mild DR was 82%,Moderate DR was 66%, Severe was DR 89% and Proliferative DR was 80%.

Effect of temperature and strain rate on compressive response of extruded magnesium nano-composite

The hot deformation behaviour of extruded magnesium-zinc oxide nano composite has been studied using hot compression *** test was conducted in the temperature range of 250-400℃ and in the strain rate range of 0.01 to 1.5 s^(−1).The processing map was obtained using the power dissipation efficiency with the functions of temperature and strain *** workability and instability domains were observed in the processing map for a nano *** optical microscopy(OM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and transmission electron microscopy(TEM)images were used to confirm the formation of dynamic recrystallization(DRX),dynamic recovery(DRY)and instability *** workability region of the composite was identified at a working temperature of 400℃ and the strain rate of 0.01 s^(−1) from the processing *** instability regions were observed at higher strain rates(>0.1 s^(−1))and temperatures(250-400℃).
