Point-defect engineering of nanoporous CuBi_(2)O_(4) photocathode via rapid thermal processing for enhanced photoelectrochemical activity

Engineering point defects such as metal and oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in manipulating the electrical,optical,and catalytic properties of oxide semiconductors for solar water ***,we synthesized nanoporous CuBi_(2)O_(4)(np-CBO)photocathodes and engineered their surface point defects via rapid thermal processing(RTP)in controlled atmospheres(O_(2),N_(2),and vacuum).We found that the O_(2)-RTP treatment of np-CBO increased the charge carrier density effectively without hampering the nanoporous morphology,which was attributed to the formation of copper vacancies(VCu).Further analyses revealed that the amounts of oxygen vacancies(Vo)and Cu^(1+)were reduced simultaneously,and the relative electrochemical active surface area increased after the O_(2)-RTP ***,the point defects(VC_(u),Cu^(1+),and Vo)regulated np-CBO achieved a superb water-splitting photocurrent density of-1.81 m A cm^(-2) under simulated sunlight illumination,which is attributed to the enhanced charge transport and transfer properties resulting from the regulated surface point ***,the reversibility of the formation of the point defects was checked by sequential RTP treatments(O_(2)-N_(2)-O_(2)-N_(2)),demonstrating the strong dependence of photocurrent response on the RTP ***,the surface point defect engineering via RTP treatment in a controlled atmosphere is a rapid and facile strategy to promote charge transport and transfer properties of photoelectrodes for efficient solar water-splitting.

Surgical Repair of Ventricular Septal Defect in Neonates: Indications and Outcomes

Role of Surgery on Growth of Tricuspid Valve in Pulmonary Atresia with Intact Ventricular Septum:Mid-Term Results of Modified Right-Ventricular Overhauling Procedure

Objectives:To access the effectiveness of our modified right-ventricular overhauling procedure on tricuspid valve(TV)growth in patients with pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum(PAIVS).Methods:We retrospectively reviewed 21 patients with PAIVS who underwent modified right ventricular overhauling(mRVoh)between 2008 and 2019 at two *** mRVoh consisted of wide resection of hypertrophied infundibular and trabecular muscle,peeling off fibrotic endocardial tissue in the right ventricle(RV)cavity,surgical pulmonary valvotomy,and Blalock-Taussig shunt or banding of ductus arteriosus under cardiopulmonary *** TV annulus sizes were measured and analyzed using echocardiography before and after ***:No mortalities were observed during a median follow-up of 3 years(interquartile range:1.3–4.7 years)of follow-up were *** was performed at a median age of 163.5 days(range:21–560 days),including seven neonates and two infants(<60 days).During follow-up,the median TV annular z-score increased significantly from−2.24 to−1.15 before and after mRVoh(p=0.004).In ten patients with a prior history of percutaneous interventions for RV outflow tract(RVOT)widening at least 6 months before mRVoh,the TV annular z-score significantly changed during the period after mRVoh(−2.03 to−1.61,p=0.028)compared with the period before mRVoh(−2.51→–2.03,p=0.575)after percutaneous intervention ***:mRVoh in PAIVS patients was positively associated with TV annular growth,and it was more effective than percutaneous RVOT widening interventions without mRVoh.

Coronary Artery Complications after Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Reconstruction Surgery

Long-Term Outcome and Risk Factor Analysis of Surgical Pulmonary Valve Replacement in Congenital Heart Disease

Objectives:To establish long-term outcome of surgical pulmonary valve replacement(PVR)in congenital heart disease(CHD)and to identify risk factors for overall mortality,operative mortality,and repetitive ***:This is a retrospective study of 375 surgical PVR in 293 patients who underwent surgical PVR for CHD between January 2000 and May *** only included patients with index PVR with previous open-heart surgery regardless of the number of *** previous surgical history of patients who underwent PVR during the study period was also *** who underwent the Rastelli operation,and those who underwent single PVR without previous open-heart surgery were ***:The median age of the patients at the time of surgical PVR was 14.9 years(Interquartile range,IQR,11.0–22.0).The median follow-up duration was 10.5 years(IQR,5.5–14.8 years).There were 3 patients with operative mortality(1.0%)and 15 patients with overall mortality(5.1%).The survival rate was 95.1%over 20 years follow-up *** analysis demonstrated that more than 3 times of previous open-heart surgeries before surgical PVR,older age at the first operation,longer cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB)time and longer intensive care unit(ICU)stay were predictors for overall *** who underwent surgical PVR after more than 3 times of previous open-heart surgeries had significantly higher mortality than those who underwent open-heart surgeries less than 3 times(P<0.001).Age younger than 10 years,male,multiple valve problems and longer ICU stay were significant predictors for repetitive PVR by multivariate ***:Though surgical PVR has excellent long-term outcome,it should be performed with caution for those who previously underwent multiple open-heart surgeries,especially if patient received more than 3 times of open-heart surgeries.

Monitoring the Hepatitis A Virus in Oyster from Korea

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) causes many cases of oyster- or clam-associated gastroenteritis in various countries. HAV was detected on oyster by RT-PCR in 19.6% (11/56) in Korea. The percentages of HAV-positive samples in 2011 and 2012 were 27.6% and 11.1%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that several nucleotide sequences highly similar to those of HAVs isolated in this study. Phylogenetic analysis of the coding regions of the viral protein VP4/VP2 revealed that all amplicons were classi?ed into IA genogroup. It will provide useful data that aids in our understanding circulating HAVs and may contribute to future control.

Human Rhinoviruses in Korean with Acute Low Respiratory Tract Infections

Human rhinovirus (HRV) must be viewed as a significant etiological agent of acute low respiratory tract infections (ALRIs) in infants and young children. The present study has been carried out to investigate the prevalence of recently identified respiratory viruses and determine the phylogenetic composition of HRV strains. In total, 923 nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPAs) collected from hospitalized patients with ALRIs between January and December 2010 (453 females and 470 males) at five referral hospitals in Seoul were tested for respiratory viruses. Viruses were detected by RT-PCR (Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) in 501 (54.3%) of the 923 positive samples obtained. Overall, HRV was detected in 7.9%, ADV in 10.2%, IFV in 21.9%, RSV in 3.6%, hMPV in 2.7%, HCoV in 2.5%, HEV in 1.6%, HBoV in 1.6%, and PIV in 2.4% of the samples. HRV infections occurred throughout the year, with peaks in January, May, July, and November of 2010. Phylogenetic analyses using the VP4/VP2 cording region showed that among the 27 isolates with HRV, 14 (52%) were infected with species A, 2 (7%) were infected with species B, and 11 (41%) were infected with the strains from HRV-C. HRV-C sequences are genetically distinct, sharing only 32% to 33% of their amino acids with HRV-A and HRV-B, while retaining 46% to 100% identity with each other. HRV-A, B, and C were co-circulating in children hospitalized with ALRIs in Korea in 2010. These findings indicated that HRV-C was the important causative agent of HRV associated with ALRIs.

Detection of Listeria monocytogenes in Foods and Characterization by PFGE

The aims of the present study were to investigate the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in 1042 foods collected from different market to characterize the isolates by phenotypical and molecular methods. In particular, L. monocytogenes obtained from different types of foods such as RTE (kimbap), fish (smoked salmon and seasoned-dried slice fish) and meat (cut raw beef and pork) from 2009 to 2011, were used. Twelve samples (2.1%) were positive for L. monocytogenes. Detection rate of L. monocytogenes varied significantly by food type and ranged from 1.1% to 5.2%. Meat is the highest prevalence for L. monocytogenes (5.2%) followed by RTE (1.8%) and Fish (1.1%). Twelve isolates were also serotyped by the agglutination method. The most common serotypes detected in the 12 strains tested were 1/4b (75.0%), followed by 1/2a (16.7%), and 1/2b (8.3%). For this study, we used serotyping and detected 6 different virulence-associated genes (inlA, inlB, plcA, plcB, hlyA, and actA) and 16s rRNA using multiplex-PCR. PFGE was performed to determine genetic characterization of L. monocytogenes strains to define the genetic diversity.
