Global parameter estimation of the Cochlodinium polykrikoides model using bioassay data

Cochlodinium polykrikoides is a notoriously harmful algal species that inflicts severe damage on the aquacultures of the coastal seas of Korea and Japan. Information on their expected movement tracks and boundaries of influence is very useful and important for the effective establishment of a reduction plan. In general, the information is supported by a red-tide（a.k.a algal bloom） model. The performance of the model is highly dependent on the accuracy of parameters, which are the coefficients of functions approximating the biological growth and loss patterns of the C. polykrikoides. These parameters have been estimated using the bioassay data composed of growth-limiting factor and net growth rate value pairs. In the case of the C. polykrikoides, the parameters are different from each other in accordance with the used data because the bioassay data are sufficient compared to the other algal species. The parameters estimated by one specific dataset can be viewed as locally-optimized because they are adjusted only by that dataset. In cases where the other one data set is used, the estimation error might be considerable. In this study, the parameters are estimated by all available data sets without the use of only one specific data set and thus can be considered globally optimized. The cost function for the optimization is defined as the integrated mean squared estimation error, i.e., the difference between the values of the experimental and estimated rates. Based on quantitative error analysis, the root-mean squared errors of the global parameters show smaller values, approximately 25%–50%, than the values of the local parameters. In addition, bias is removed completely in the case of the globally estimated parameters. The parameter sets can be used as the reference default values of a red-tide model because they are optimal and representative. To investigate the influence of haze on the chemical composition and formation processes of ambient aerosol particles,PM_（2.5） and size-segregated aerosol particles were collected daily during fall at an urban site of Gwangju,*** the study period,the total concentration of secondary ionic species（SIS） contributed an average of 43.9% to the PM_（2.5） ,whereas the contribution of SIS to the PM_（2.5） during the haze period was 62.3%.The NO_3 and SO^（2-）_4 concentrations in PM_（2.5） during the haze period were highly elevated,being 13.4 and 5.0 times higher than those during non-haze period,*** PM,NO^-_3,SO^（2-）_4,oxalate,water-soluble organic carbon（WSOC）,and humic-like substances（HULIS） had tri-modal size distributions peaks at 0.32,1.0,and 5.2 μm during the non-haze and haze ***,during the non-haze period they exhibited dominant size distributions at the condensation mode peaking at 0.32 μm,while on October 21 when the heaviest haze event occurred,they had predominant droplet mode size distributions peaking at 1.00 μ***,strong correlations of WSOC and HULIS with SO^（2-）_4,oxalate,and K＋at particle sizes of 〈 1.8 μm indicate that secondary processes and emissions from biomass burning could be responsible for WSOC and HULIS *** was found that the factors affecting haze formation could be the local stable synoptic conditions,including the weak surface winds and high surface pressures,the long-range transportation of haze from eastern China and upwind regions of the Korean peninsula,as well as the locally emitted and produced aerosol particles.

AIM： To introduce and evaluate the efficacy and technical aspects of endoscopic submucosal dissection （ESD） using a novel device, the Fork knife. METHODS： From March 2004 to April 2008, ESD was performed on 265 gastric lesions using a Fork knife （Endo FS）（group A） and on 72 gastric lesions using a Flexknife （group B） at a single tertiary referral center. We retrospectively compared the endoscopic characteristics of the tumors, pathological findings, and sizes of the resected specimens. We also compared the en b/oc resection rate, complete resection rate, complications, and procedure time between the two groups. RESULTS： The mean size of the resected specimens was 4.27 ± 1.26 cm in group A and 4.29 ± 1.48 cm in group B. The en b/oc resection rate was 95.8% （254/265 lesions） in group A and 93.1% （67/72） in group B. Complete ESD without tumor cell invasion of the resected margin was obtained in 81.1% （215/265） of group A and in 73.6% （53/72） of group B. The perforation rate was 0.8% （2/265） in group A and 1.4% （1/72） in group B. The mean procedure time was 59.63 ± 56.12 min in group A and 76.65 ± 70.75 min in group B （P 〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： The Fork knife （Endo FS） is useful for clinical practice and has the advantage of reducing the procedure time.

AIM: To assess the clinical significance of incidental focal colorectal 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) uptake on 18 F-FDG-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). METHODS: The records of all the cases which had undergone colonoscopy after PET/CT within a two weeks interval were reviewed. Adenomas were considered advanced when they were villous, ≥ 10 mm in size, or had high-grade dysplasia. Colorectal cancers and advanced adenomas are collectively referred to as advanced colorectal neoplasms. Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine thesignificant predictive maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) cutoff value for advanced colorectal neoplasms and cancer. RESULTS: Ninety-five colorectal lesions matched the site of incidental focal colorectal 18 F-FDG uptake on PET/CT and 146 did not. Colonoscopy showed advanced colorectal neoplasms corresponding to the site of 18 F-FDG uptake in 49 of the 95 (51.5%) lesions with incidental uptake. Of the lesions without incidental uptake, only 6 of 146 (4.1%) had advanced colorectal neoplasms on colonoscopy, indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.001). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy of incidental focal 18 F-FDG uptake in identifying advanced colorectal neoplasms were 89.1%, 75.3%, 51.6%, 95.9%, and 78.4%, respectively. In detecting only CRC, these values were 89.2%, 69.6%, 34.7%, 97.3%, and 72.6%, respectively. The significant SUVmax cutoff value for advanced colorectal neoplasms (area under the curve 0.755, P < 0.001) was 4.35, with a sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of 75.5%, 65.2%, 69.8%, 71.4% and 70.5%, respectively. For CRC, 5.05 was the significant SUVmax cutoff value (area under the curve 0.817, P < 0.001), with a sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of 84.8%, 71.0%, 80.9%, 89.8%, and 75.8%, respectively.
