Background &Aims: This study aimed to determine whether intrahepatic hepatitis B virus (HBV) covalently closed circular (ccc) DNA and total HBV DNA levels at the end of therapy would predict sustained response to therapy. Methods: Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)positive chronic hepatitis B patients receiving either lamivudine monotherapy or combination of peginterferon and lamivudine had liver biopsy at the end of 1 year therapy and were followed for 52 more weeks after cessation of therapy. Serum HBV DNA, intrahepatic HBV ccc DNA, and total HBV DNA levels were determined. Results: Forty-seven patients, including 34 males and 13 females, were studied. Twenty-seven patients received combination therapy, and 20 patients received lamivudine monotherapy. Twentynine patients had end-of-treatment virologic response, and 15 patients had sustained response 52 weeks after therapy. At the end of treatment, log serum HBV DNA levels correlated well with log intrahepatic HBV cccDNA and log intrahepatic total HBV DNA levels. Log intrahepatic cccDNA and log intrahepatic total DNA levels were significantly lower among patients with sustained virologic response. The adjusted odds ratio for log cccDNA was 5.3 (95%CI: 1.5-18.2, P =. 009) and, for log intrahepatic HBV DNA, was 4.4 (95%CI: 1.3-14.7, P =. 015) to predict sustained virologic response. Using log cccDNA at -0.80 copies/genome equivalent as cutoff, the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values and accuracy of predicting sustained virologic response were 73%, 78%, 56%, 86%, and 77%respectively. Conclusions: Intrahepatic HBV cccDNA and intrahepatic total HBV DNA levels at the end of therapy are superior to serum HBV DNA as surrogates of sustained virologic response.

Background &Aims: Helicobacter pylori-negative idiopathic ulcers are increasingly recognized. The secular trend and long-term outcome of this condition are unknown. Methods: We prospectively studied consecutive patientswith bleeding gastroduodenal ulcers from january to December 2000. The incidence and etiology of ulcers during this period were compared with that between September 1997 and August 1998. H pylori negative idiopathic ulcers were defined as negative tests for H pylori, no exposure to analgesics within 4 weeks, and absence of other risk factors for ulcers. After the ulcers had healed, patients with H pylori-negative idiopathic ulcers and patients with H pylori ulcers who received eradication therapy were followed up for 12 months without anti-ulcer drugs. Results: Six hundred thirty-eight patients had bleeding ulcers: 213 (33.4%) were H pylori ulcers, and 120 (18.8%) were H pylori negative idiopathic ulcers (vs 480 [50.3%] H pylori ulcers and 40 [4.2%] H pylori-negative idiopathic ulcers in 1997-1998; P ylori-negative idiopathic ulcers accounted for 16.1%of patients who were admitted for bleeding and 42.4%of patients who bled while in the hospital (P ylori-negative idiopathic ulcers had histologic evidence of past H pylori infection. The probability of recurrent ulcer complications in 12 months was 13.4%(95%CI: 7.3%-19.5%) in patients with H pylori-negative idiopathic ulcers and 2.5%(95%CI: 0.4%-4.6%) in patients with H pylori ulcers who received eradication therapy (P =. 0002). Conclusions: The incidence of H pylori-negative idiopathic bleeding ulcers is rising. These ulcers are prone to recurrent complications.

Background &Aims:Accurate serum biomarkers for gastric cancer currently are lacking. We attempted to identify potential diagnostic serum markers for gastric cancer with the use of the surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization ProteinChip technology. Methods:The study was divided into 3 phases: (1) discovery of potential diagnostic markers using sera of gastric cancer patients and controls, (2) development of a diagnostic model, and (3) independent validation of the diagnostic model using a different cohort of gastric cancer and control patients. The serum proteins/peptides were analyzed with 2 types of ProteinChip arrays, IMAC30 arrays loaded with copper (II) ion and CM10 (weak cation exchange) arrays. Results:In the discovery set, peak intensities of 31 surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization proteomic features were significantly higher in gastric cancer patients. The tumor-specific nature of 6 proteomic features with the mass/charge (m/z) values of 5098, 8592, 8610, 11,468, 11,804, and 50,140 was verified by their lower peak intensities in postoperative sera. After excluding the sodium adduct peak (8610 m/z) of the 8592 m/z protein, the peak intensities of the tumor-specific proteomic features were used to develop a linear regression model for calculating a diagnostic index. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the corresponding diagnostic index was 0.92 (95%confidence interval, 0.85-0.99) in the independent validation set. At a specificity of 95%, the sensitivity for gastric cancer detection was 83%. Conclusions:A unique serum proteomic fingerprint can be detected in the sera of gastric cancer patients, which may be useful in the noninvasive diagnosis of gastric cancer.

Supposition of graphene stacks to estimate the contact resistance and conductivity of nanocomposites

In this study,the effects of stacked nanosheets and the surrounding interphase zone on the resistance of the contact region between nanosheets and the tunneling conductivity of samples are evaluated with developed equations superior to those previously *** contact resistance and nanocomposite conductivity are modeled by several influencing factors,including stack properties,interphase depth,tunneling size,and contact *** developed model's accuracy is verified through numerous experimental *** further validate the models and establish correlations between parameters,the effects of all the variables on contact resistance and nanocomposite conductivity are ***,the contact resistance is primarily dependent on the polymer tunnel resistivity,contact area,and tunneling *** dimensions of the graphene nanosheets significantly influence the conductivity,which ranges from 0 S/m to90 S/*** increased number of nanosheets in stacks and a larger gap between them enhance the nanocomposite's ***,the thicker interphase and smaller tunneling size can lead to higher sample conductivity due to their optimistic effects on the percolation threshold and network efficacy.

Thermo-kinetic characteristics on stabilizing hetero-phase interface of metal matrix composites by crystal plasticity finite element method

Using dislocation-based constitutive modeling in three-dimension crystal plasticity finite element(3D CPFE)simulations,co-deformation and instability of hetero-phase interface in different material systems were herein studied for polycrystalline metal matrix composites(MMCs).Local stress and strain fields in two types of 3layer MMCs such as fcc/fcc Cu-Ag and fcc/bcc Cu-Nb have been predicted under simple compressive ***,more severe strain-induced interface instability can be observed in the fcc/bcc systems than in the fcc/fcc systems upon refining to metallic nanolayered composites(MNCs).By detailed analysis of stress and strain localization,it has been demonstrated that the interface instability is always accompanied by high-stress concentration,i.e.,thermodynamic characteristics,or high strain prevention i.e.,kinetic characteristics,at the hetero-phase *** then follows that the thermodynamic driving forceG and the kinetic energy barrier Q during dislocation and shear banding can be adopted to classify the deformation modes,following the so-called thermo-kinetic *** by inserting a high density of high-energy interfaces into the Cu-Nb composites,such thermo-kinetic integration at the hetero-phase interface allows a successful establishment of MMCs with the high△G-high Q deformation mode,which ensures high hardening and uniform strain distri-bution,thus efficiently suppressing the shear band,stabilizing the hetero-phase interface,and obtaining an exceptional combination in strength and *** hetero-phase interface chosen by a couple of thermodynamics and kinetics can be defined as breaking the thermo-kinetic correlation and has been proposed for artificially designing MNCs.

Greatly enhanced corrosion/wear resistances of epoxy coating for Mg alloy through a synergistic effect between functionalized graphene and insulated blocking layer

The poor corrosion and wear resistances of Mg alloys seriously limit their potential applications in various *** conventional epoxy coating easily forms many intrinsic defects during the solidification process,which cannot provide sufficient *** the current study,we design a double-layer epoxy composite coating on Mg alloy with enhanced anti-corrosion/wear properties,via the spin-assisted assembly *** outer layer is functionalized graphene(FG)in waterborne epoxy resin(WEP)and the inner layer is Ce-based conversion(Ce)*** FG sheets can be homogeneously dispersed within the epoxy matrix to fill the intrinsic defects and improve the barrier *** Ce film connects the outer layer with the substrate,showing the transition *** corrosion rate of Ce/WEP/FG composite coating is 2131 times lower than that of bare Mg alloy,and the wear rate is decreased by~90%.The improved corrosion resistance is attributed to the labyrinth effect(hindering the penetration of corrosive medium)and the obstruction of galvanic coupling *** synergistic effect derived from the FG sheet and blocking layer exhibits great potential in realizing the improvement of multi-functional integration,which will open up a new avenue for the development of novel composite protection coatings of Mg alloys.

Optimization of chemistry and process parameters for control of intermetallic formation in Mg sludges

Intermetallic formation in sludge during magnesium(Mg)melting,holding and high pressure die casting practices is a very important ***,very often it is overlooked by academia,original equipment manufacturers(OEM),metal ingot producers and even die *** aim of this study was to minimize the intermetallic formation in Mg sludge via the optimization of the chemistry and process *** Al8Mn5 intermetallic particles were identified by the microstructure analysis based on the Al and Mn *** design of experiment(DOE)technique,Taguchi method,was employed to minimize the intermetallic formation in the sludge of Mg alloys with various chemical compositions of Al,Mn,Fe,and different process parameters,holding temperature and holding *** sludge yield(Sy)and intermetallic size(IS)was selected as two *** optimum combination of the levels in terms of minimizing the intermetallic formation were 9 wt.%Al,0.15 wt.%Mn,0.001 wt.%(10 ppm)Fe,690℃ for the holding temperature and holding at 30 mins for the holding time,*** best combination for smallest intermetallic size were 9 wt.%Al,0.15 wt.%Mn,0.001 wt.%(10 ppm)Fe,630℃ for the holding temperature and holding at 60 mins for the holding time,*** groups of sludge factors,Chemical Sludge(CSF),Physical Sludge(PSF)and Comprehensive Sludge Factors(and CPSF)were established for prediction of sludge yields and intermetallic sizes in Al-containing Mg *** CPSF with five independent variables including both chemical elements and process parameters gave high accuracy in prediction,as the prediction of the PSF with only the two processing parameters of the melt holding temperature and time showed a relatively large deviation from the experimental *** Chemical Sludge Factor was primarily designed for small ingot producers and die casters with a limited melting and holding capacity,of which process parameters could be fixed *** Physical Sludge Factor could be used f

Influence of the zigzag fins and inlet arrangements on the cooling proficiency of the mini-channel heat sink

Mini-channel heatsinks are one of the most effective thermal management methods for high heatﬂux devices due to the high performance of convective heat *** recent years,various techniques have been innovated to improve the thermal proﬁciency of the mini-channel *** of these are taking advantage ofﬁns’structural designs and ar-rangements of inlets and *** zigzagﬁns and channels were considered in the previous works in heatsinks,and researchers analyzed their cooling enhancement ***,in the present work,a combined cooling technique,considering new-type zigzagﬁns’geometrical parameters(arrangement,length,and height)causes turbulenceﬂow and higher convective heat transfer along with different positionings ofﬂow inlet and outlets resulting in superior temper-ature uniformity,is proposed to evaluate their impacts on the cooling proﬁciency of the heat sink versus different Reynolds *** assess the thermal and hydraulic performance of the proposed heatsink,different parameters,including temperature contours,Nusselt numbers,thermal resistance,and entropy generation are *** a result,it is observed that in the case demonstrating the best thermal performance,the Nusselt number,pressure drop,thermal resistance,and entropy generation are respectively 37.13,4586.46 Pa,0.000078 m^(2)·K/W,and 0.1078 W/K in the best *** well,it is found that by changing the arrangements of inlets and outlets,the Nusselt number,and thermal resistance are improved by 12%and 13%,***,the proposed mini-channel heat sink could be used as a high-performance thermal management system for electronic devices in different industries,including energy,solar,and medical sectors.

Four Late-type Galaxies with Double Radio Lobes and Properties of Such Galaxies

The triggering mechanism for radio lobes from late-type galaxies is not fully *** samples are desired for a thorough investigation and *** utilizing the optical data from the newly released Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument imaging surveys and the radio sources from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeter,we identify four Late-type Galaxies with double Radio Lobes(La GRLs):j0217-3645,j0947+6220,j1412+3723 and j1736+*** previously known La GRLs,we confirm the correlation between radio power P_(1.4GHz)and stellar mass M_(*)of host ***(25/35)La GRLs belong to the blue cloud galaxies,while the newly identified cases in this work are located within the region of the red *** find a clear correlation between the differential radio power,i.e.,the offset from the P_(1.4GHz)-M_(*)relation,and the galaxy color,indicating that bluer galaxies at a fixed M_(*)tend to host more powerful radio ***,the majority(31/36)of La GRLs are either located in a galaxy group or displaying a disturbed *** suggest that all of the galaxy mass,color and surrounding environment could play important roles in triggering radio lobes in late-type galaxies.
