Acute kidney injury due to intravenous detergent poisoning:A case report

BACKGROUND Detergent poisoning mostly occurs through oral ingestion(>85%),ocular exposure(<15%),or dermal exposure(<8%).Reports of detergent poisoning through an intravenous injection are extremely *** addition,there are very few cases of renal toxicity directly caused by ***,we report a unique case of acute kidney injury caused by detergent poisoning through an accidental intravenous *** SUMMARY A 61-year-old man was intravenously injected with 20 mL of detergent by another patient in the same room of a local *** surfactant and calcium carbonate accounted for the largest proportion of the *** patient complained of vascular pain,chest discomfort,and nausea,and was transferred to our *** hospitalization,the patient’s serum creatinine level increased to 5.42 mg/dL,and his daily urine output decreased to approximately 300 *** biopsy findings noted that the glomeruli were relatively intact;however,diffuse acute tubular injury was *** edema was also noted,and the patient underwent a total of four hemodiafiltration ***,the patient’s urine output gradually increased whereas the serum creatinine level *** patient was discharged in a stable status without any *** Detergents appear to directly cause renal tubular injury by systemic *** treating a patient with detergent poisoning,physicians should be aware that the renal function may also *** addition,timely renal replacement therapy may help improve the patient’s prognosis.

To the Editor:A 63-year-old male patient was referred from a local clinic for diffuse abdominal pain for 1 day and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) in computed tomography (CT).He denied any medical history of hypertension,diabetes mellitus,hepatitis or *** patient’s blood pressure was 100/70 mmHg with a pulse rate of 105 beats/min and a body temperature of 37.1℃.The Abdomen was mildly distended with diffuse pain and tenderness.

Background: Communication is an essential element in nursing practice. Patients expressed low satisfaction at communication with nurses. Nursing students feel pressured on communication with patients and are not properly prepared to effectively communicate with the patients. Even newly graduated nurses also present communication with patients as the most difficult job in nursing practice. Hence communication skills should be learned and well trained throughout the college education in order to utilize the skills properly in clinical practice. Peer-evaluation in learning has been identified as an effective method in diverse populations of students from elementary students to adults. In addition, it has been demonstrated that peer-evaluation was useful to understand communication problems with patients in a sample of medical doctors. Peer-evaluation can improve learning motivation as well as communication skills of students. Among the visual audio devices, a video is the fastest method to facilitate comprehensive memory that leads to transmit learning. It has also been known as an effective method to develop a rapport with a patient and improve communication skills of health care practitioners. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of video based peer-evaluation on communication skills and learning motivation in nursing students. Methods: A non-equivalent control with pre-posttest design was used. The participants were 47 sophomore nursing students who enrolled in a course of fundamental nursing at a nursing college in South Korea in the Fall semester of 2008. Their grade point averages（GPA） were used to assign them to one of the groups;those with even numbers of GPA ranks were assigned to the intervention group and odd numbers to the control group. The intervention group had 24 students and the control group with 23 students. Usefulness of colonic tattooing using indocyanine green in patients with colorectal tumors

AIM To prove that tattooing using indocyanine green(ICG) is feasible in laparoscopic surgery for a colon *** From January 2012 to December 2016, all patients who underwent laparoscopic colonic surgery were retrospectively screened, and 1010 patients with colorectal neoplasms were included. Their lesions were tattooed with ICG the day before the operation. The tattooed group(TG) included 114 patients, and the non-tattooed group(NTG) was selected by propensity score matching of subjects based on age, sex, tumor staging, and operation method(n = 228). In total, 342 patients were enrolled. Between the groups, the changes in [Delta(Δ), preoperative-postoperative] the hemoglobin and albumin levels, operation time, hospital stay, oral ingestion period, transfusion, and perioperative complications were compared. RESULTS Preoperative TG had a shorter operation time(174.76 ± 51.6 min vs 192.63 ± 59.9 min, P < 0.01), hospital stay(9.55 ± 3.36 d vs 11.42 ± 8.23 d, P < 0.01), and postoperative oral ingestion period(1.58 ± 0.96 d vs 2.81 ± 1.90 d, P < 0.01). The Δ hemoglobin(0.78 ± 0.76 g/dL vs 2.2 ± 1.18 g/dL, P < 0.01) and Δ albumin(0.41 ± 0.44 g/dL vs 1.08 ± 0.39 g/dL, P < 0.01) levels were lower in the TG. On comparison of patients in the "N0" and "N1 or N2" groups, the N0 colon cancer group had a better operation time, length of hospital stay, oral ingestion period, Δ hemoglobin, and Δ albumin results than those of the N1 or N2 group. The operation methods affected the results, and laparoscopic anterior resection(LAR) showed similar results. However, for left and right hemicolectomy, both groups showed no difference in operation time or hospital *** Preoperative tattooing with ICG is useful for laparoscopic colectomy, especially in the N0 colon cancer group and LAR.

伴随着月球科考与开发的全面展开,月面科研站的工程建设已逐渐提上日程,为月面科研站提供可靠、持续、长寿命的电力供应是先决条件。核反应堆电源系统,因适应月球各纬度地区和长昼夜交替条件,具有持续提供高功率输出、高能量密度和长寿命特点,被视为月面科研站能源系统主电源最有潜力的解决方案。本文首先总结了人类探月历史的演化,紧接着介绍了月面科研站能源系统面临的环境条件以及能源需求,然后介绍了月面核反应堆电源系统的结构和工作原理,并梳理了国内外当前各种月面科研站核反应堆电源系统的概念设计和开发阶段情况,最后对未来月面用核反应堆电源系统的发展前景进行了展望,并针对技术突破和应用需求提出了建议。

Chronic diarrhea is one of the most frequent gastro-intestinal manifestations in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Protozoa and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are opportunistic pathogens that can easily infect these patients. Among the NTM, Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is the most frequently observed pathogen in HIV-infected patients. However, NTMs other than MAC have not been reported as a gastrointestinal pathogen as yet. We present a case of chronic diarrhea in an AIDS patient in whom Mycobacterium ulcerans and cryptosporidium co-infection is evidenced from colonic tissue.

In this study, we investigated the effects of streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes on antioxi- dant-like protein-1 immunoreactivity, protein carbonyl levels, and malondialdehyde formation, a marker for lipid peroxidation, in the hippocampus. For this study, streptozotocin （75 mg/kg） was intraperitoneally injected into adult rats to induce type 1 diabetes. The three experimental pa- rameters were determined at 2, 3, 4 weeks after streptozotocin treatment. Fasting blood glucose levels significantly increased by 20.7-21.9 mM after streptozotocin treatment. The number of antioxidant-like protein-1 immunoreactive neurons significantly decreased in the hippocampal CA1 region, but not the dentate gyrus, 3 weeks after streptozotocin treatment compared to the control group. Malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl levels, which are modified by oxidative stress, significantly increased with a peak at 3 weeks after malondialdehyde treatment, and then decreased 4 weeks after malondialdehyde treatment. These results suggest that neurons in the hippocampal CA1 region, but not the dentate gyrus, are susceptible to oxidative stress 3 weeks after malondialdehyde treatment.

Finding water resources is a crucial objective of lunar ***,both hydroxyl(OH)and natural water(H2O)have been reported to be scarce on the *** propose a potential method for obtaining water on the moon through H2O formation via endogenous reactions in lunar regolith(LR),specifically through the reaction FeO/Fe2O3+H/Fe+*** process is demonstrated using LR samples brought back by the Chang’E-5 *** and Fe2O3 are lunar minerals containing Fe ***(H)retained in lunar minerals from the solar wind can be used to produce *** results of this study reveal that 51–76 mg of H2O can be generated from 1 g of LR after melting at temperatures above 1,200 *** amount is10,000 times the naturally occurring OH and H2O on the *** the five primary minerals in LR returned by the Chang’E-5 mission,FeTiO3 ilmenite contains the highest amount of H,owing to its unique lattice structure with sub-nanometer *** the first time,in situ heating experiments using a transmission electron microscope reveal the concurrent formation of Fe crystals and H2O *** irradiation promotes the endogenous redox reaction,which is helpful for understanding the distribution of OH on the *** findings suggest that the hydrogen retained in LR is a significant resource for obtaining H2O on the moon,which is helpful for establishing a scientific research station on the moon.

Dear Editor,Somatic cells can be reprogrammed into pluripotent stem cells,called induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs),by defined transcription factors(Takahashi et al.,2006).The reprogramming of somatic cells may be a continuous stochastic process in which nearly all somatic donor cells have the ability to give rise to iPSCs with continuous passaging and the expression of defined factors(Hanna et al.,2009).However,the reprogramming process can be divided into discrete stages,including the generation of dedifferentiated pre-pluripotent cells followed by authentic pluripotent cells(Silva et al.,2009).
