Ear ischemia induced by endovascular therapy for arteriovenous fistula of the sigmoid sinus: A case report

BACKGROUND Arteriovenous fistula of the sigmoid sinus is an abnormal connection of arteries with the sigmoid sinus.Endovascular treatments of such lesions are considered safe and with low rates of complications.CASE SUMMARY A 62-year-old female patient underwent endovascular treatment of an arteriovenous fistula of the right sigmoid sinus on February 7,2017,but her tinnitus was not cured.She was admitted to the Beijing Tiantan Hospital,Capital Medical University,on March 20,2017,and her pre-operative diagnosis,by digital subtraction cerebral angiography,was arteriovenous fistula of the sigmoid sinus.She underwent endovascular embolization of the distal occipital artery and posterior auricular artery using Onyx-18.The arteriovenous fistula of the sigmoid sinus was cured,and her tinnitus disappeared,but ischemia of the upper 2/3 of the right auricle occurred without hearing loss.The patient received treatment to improve microcirculation,in addition to fluid supplementation,analgesia,and hyperbaric oxygen,and the swelling due to ischemia in the right auricle did not progress further.The patient reported no tinnitus,and the right auricle had returned to normal 3 years later.CONCLUSION Ischemic complications of vital organs should be considered when performing embolization procedures for arteriovenous fistulas of cerebral sinuses.Compensation of the organs should be evaluated before the operation,and the related treatment regimens should be planned.

Surface engineering with ionic polymers on membranes for boron removal

Removal of boric acid from seawater and wastewater using reverse osmosis membrane technologies is imperative and yet remains inadequately addressed by current commercial membranes.Existing research efforts performed post-modification of reverse osmosis membranes to enhance boron rejection,which is usually accompanied by substantial sacrifice in water permeability.This study delves into the surface engineering of low-pressure reverse osmosis membranes,aiming to elevate boron removal efficiency while maintaining optimal salt rejection and water permeability.Membranes were modified by the self-polymerization and co-deposition of dopamine and polystyrene sulfonate at varying ratios and concentrations.The surfaces became smoother and more hydrophilic after modification.The optimum membrane exhibited a water permeability of 9.2±0.1 L·m^(-2)·h^(-1)·bar^(-1),NaCl rejection of 95.8%±0.3%,and boron rejection of 49.7%±0.1%and 99.6%±0.3%at neutral and alkaline pH,respectively.The water permeability is reduced by less than 15%,while the boron rejection is 3.7 times higher compared to the blank membrane.This research provides a promising avenue for enhancing boron removal in reverse osmosis membranes and addressing water quality concerns in the desalination process.

Multiphysical contact of functionally graded magneto-electroelastic material with imperfect bonding interface

Three-dimensional(3D)frictional contact model of functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic(FGMEE)material with a conducting spherical punch under electromagnetic fields is presented.Two types of imperfect bonding interface of layers,dislocation-like interface and force-like interface,are considered.Frequency response functions(FRFs)for multilayered MEE material with imperfect interface subjected to unit mechanical,electric,and magnetic loads are derived.The FRFs are used with the semi-analytical method(SAM)to solve present multiphysical contact problem.The present model is verified by comparing with literatures and the finite element method(FEM)and used to study the contact problem of FGMEE film imperfectly bonded on homogenous MEE half-space under electromagnetic fields.Parametric studies are conducted to reveal the effects of imperfect interfaces and also film properties including gradient index and thickness.

Effect of Wave Nonlinearity on the Instantaneous Seabed Liquefaction

The nonlinear variation of wave is commonly seen in nearshore area,and the resulting seabed response and liquefaction are of high concern to coastal engineers.In this study,an analytical formula considering the nonlinear wave skewness and asymmetry is adopted to provide wave pressure on the seabed surface.The liquefaction depth attenuation coefficient and width growth coefficient are defined to quantitatively characterize the nonlinear effect of wave on seabed liquefaction.Based on the 2D full dynamic model of wave-induced seabed response,a detailed parametric study is carried out in order to evaluate the influence of the nonlinear variation of wave loadings on seabed liquefaction.Further,new empirical prediction formulas are proposed to fast predict the maximum liquefaction under nonlinear wave.Results indicate that(1)Due to the influence of wave nonlinearity,the vertical transmission of negative pore water pressure in the seabed is hindered,and therefore,the amplitude decreases significantly.(2)In general,with the increase of wave nonlinearity,the liquefaction depth of seabed decreases gradually.Especially under asymmetric and skewed wave loading,the attenuation of maximum seabed liquefaction depth is the most significant among all the nonlinear wave conditions.However,highly skewed wave can cause the liquefaction depth of seabed greater than that under linear wave.(3)The asymmetry of wave pressure leads to the increase of liquefaction width,whereas the influence of skewedness is not significant.(4)Compared with the nonlinear waveform,seabed liquefaction is more sensitive to the variation of nonlinear degree of wave loading.

Refractory autoimmune hemolytic anemia in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus and ulcerative colitis:A case report

BACKGROUND Ulcerative colitis(UC)and systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)are both systemic immunoreactive diseases,and their pathogenesis depends on the interaction between genes and environmental factors.There are no reports of UC with SLE in China,but six cases of SLE with UC have been reported in China.The combination of these two diseases has distinct effects on the pathogenesis of both diseases.CASE SUMMARY A female patient(30 years old)came to our hospital due to dull umbilical pain,diarrhea and mucous bloody stool in August 2018 and was diagnosed with UC.The symptoms were relieved after oral administration of mesalazine(1 g po tid)or folic acid(5 mg po qd),and the patient were fed a control diet.On June 24,2019,the patient was admitted for treatment due to anemia and tinnitus.During hospitalization,the patient had repeated low-grade fever and a progressively decreased Hb level.Blood tests revealed positive antinuclear antibody test,positive anti-dsDNA antibody,0.24 g/L C3(0.9-1.8 g/L),0.04 g/L C4(0.1-0.4 g/L),32.37 g/L immunoglobulin(8-17 g/L),and 31568.1 mg/24 h total 24-h urine protein(0-150 mg/24 h).The patient was diagnosed with SLE involving the joints,kidneys and blood system.Previously reported cases of SLE were retrieved from PubMed to characterize clinicopathological features and identify prognostic factors for SLE.CONCLUSION The patient was discharged in remission after a series of treatments,such as intravenous methylprednisolone sodium succinate,intravenous human immunoglobulin,cyclophosphamide injection,and plasma exchange.After discharge,the patient took oral prednisone acetate tablets,cyclosporine capsules,hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets and other treatments for symptoms and was followed up regularly for 1 month,after which the patient's condition continued to improve and stabilize.

Differences in spring precipitation over southern China associated with multiyear La Ni?a events

Composite analyses were performed in this study to reveal the difference in spring precipitation over southern China during multiyear La Ni?a events during 1901 to 2015. It was found that there is significantly below-normal precipitation during the first boreal spring, but above-normal precipitation during the second year. The difference in spring precipitation over southern China is correlative to the variation in western North Pacific anomalous cyclone(WNPC), which can in turn be attributed to the different sea surface temperature anomaly(SSTA) over the Tropical Pacific. The remote forcing of negative SSTA in the equatorial central and eastern Pacific and the local air-sea interaction in the western North Pacific are the usual causes of WNPC formation and maintenance.SSTA in the first spring is stronger than those in the second spring. As a result, the intensity of WNPC in the first year is stronger, which is more likely to reduce the moisture in southern China by changing the moisture transport, leading to prolonged precipitation deficits over southern China. However, the tropical SSTA signals in the second year are too weak to induce the formation and maintenance of WNPC and the below-normal precipitation over southern China. Thus, the variation in tropical SSTA signals between two consecutive springs during multiyear La Ni?a events leads to obvious differences in the spatial pattern of precipitation anomaly in southern China by causing the different WNPC response.

Mechanism of high-preload support based on the NPR anchor cable in layered soft rock tunnels

The control of large deformation problems in layered soft rock tunnels needs to solve urgently.The roof problem is particularly severe among the deformation issues in tunnels.This study first analyzes the asymmetric deformation modes in layered soft rock tunnels with large deformations.Subsequently,we construct a mechanical model under ideal conditions for controlling the roof of layered soft rock tunnels through high preload with the support of NPR anchor cables.The prominent roles of long and short NPR anchor cables in the support system are also analyzed.The results indicate the significance of high preload in controlling the roof of layered soft rock tunnels.The short NPR anchor cables effectively improve the integrity of the stratified soft rock layers,while the long NPR anchor cables effectively mobilize the self-bearing capacity of deep-stable rock layers.Finally,the high-preload support method with NPR anchor cables is validated to have a good effect on controlling large deformations in layered soft rock tunnels through field monitoring data.

Membrane technologies are becoming increasingly versatile and helpful today for sustainable development.Machine Learning(ML),an essential branch of artiﬁcial intelligence(AI),has substantially impacted the research and development norm of new materials for energy and environment.This review provides an overview and perspectives on ML methodologies and their applications in membrane design and dis-covery.A brief overview of membrane technologies isﬁrst provided with the current bottlenecks and potential solutions.Through an appli-cations-based perspective of AI-aided membrane design and discovery,we further show how ML strategies are applied to the membrane discovery cycle(including membrane material design,membrane application,membrane process design,and knowledge extraction),in various membrane systems,ranging from gas,liquid,and fuel cell separation membranes.Furthermore,the best practices of integrating ML methods and speciﬁc application targets in membrane design and discovery are presented with an ideal paradigm proposed.The challenges to be addressed and prospects of AI applications in membrane discovery are also highlighted in the end.

Toward a rapid and convenient nanoplastic quantification method in laboratory-scale study based on fluorescence intensity

The thorough investigation of nanoplastics(NPs)in aqueous environments requires efficient and expeditious quantitative analytical methods that are sensitive to environmentally relevant NP concentrations and convenient to employ.Optical analysis-based quantitative methods have been acknowledged as effective and rapid approaches for quantifying NP concentrations in laboratory-scale studies.Herein,we compared three commonly used optical response indicators,namely fluorescence intensity(FI),ultraviolet absorbance,and turbidity,to assess their performance in quantifying NPs.Furthermore,orthogonal experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of various water quality parameters on the preferred indicator-based quantification method.The results revealed that FI exhibits the highest correlation coefficient(>0.99)with NP concentration.Notably,the limit of quantification(LOQ)for various types of NPs is exceptionally low,ranging from 0.0089 to 0.0584 mg/L in ultrapure water,well below environmentally relevant concentrations.Despite variations in water quality parameters such as pH,salinity,suspended solids(SS),and humic acid,a robust relationship between detectable FI and NP concentration was identified.However,an increased matrix,especially SS in water samples,results in an enhanced LOQ for NPs.Nevertheless,the quantitative method remains applicable in real water bodies,especially in drinking water,with NP LOQ as low as 0.0157–0.0711 mg/L.This exceeds the previously reported detectable concentration for 100 nm NPs at 40µg/mL using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.This study confirms the potential of FI as a reliable indicator for the rapid quantification of NPs in aqueous environments,offering substantial advantages in terms of both convenience and cost-effectiveness.

Electrochemical converting ethanol to hydrogen and acetic acid for large scale green hydrogen production

Electrochemical coupling hydrogen evolution with biomass reforming reaction(named electrochemical hydrogen and chemical cogeneration(EHCC)),which realizes green hydrogen production and chemical upgrading simultaneously,is a promising method to build a carbon-neutral society.Herein,we analyze the EHCC process by considering the market assessment.The ethanol to acetic acid and hydrogen approach is the most feasible for large-scale hydrogen production.We develop AuCu nanocatalysts,which can selectively oxidize ethanol to acetic acid(>97%)with high long-term activity.The isotopic and in-situ infrared experiments reveal that the promoted water dissociation step by alloying contributes to the enhanced activity of the partial oxidation reaction path.A flow-cell electrolyzer equipped with the AuCu anodic catalyst achieves the steady production of hydrogen and acetic acid simultaneously in both high selectivity(>90%),demonstrating the potential scalable application for green hydrogen production with low energy consumption and high profitability.
