Heav. metal stress induced hyperglycemia in blue swimmer crab, Portunus pelagicus

The study was to find out the effect of cadmium and mercury on lev.ls of hemolymph glucose, crustacean hyperglycemic hormone（CHH） and hepatopancreas glycogen in the blue swimmer crab Portunus pelagicus. The experiments were performed in both intact and eyestalk ablated crabs. Quantification of CHH was done by the indirect ELISA with the aid of primary anti-Carcinus maenas-CHH antibody. Higher glucose concentration was observ.d on exposure to 8×10^–6 of cadmium（（825.6±5.42） μg/m L） and 6×10^–6 of mercury（（90.5±6.25） μg/m L）after 48 h and 24 h respectiv.ly. Higher lev.l of hemolymph glucose was observ.d in eyestalk intact crabs on exposure to cadmium and mercury than eyestalk ablated crabs. Decrease in the lev.ls of CHH was observ.d in both eyestalk intact and ablated crabs on heav. metal exposure. Decline of the hepatopancreas glycogen lev.l was also witnessed with the exposure to heav. metal, which v.lidated its utilization in the production of glucose. Thus this study brings to light, the v.riations in hemolymph glucose, CHH and hepatopancreas glycogen on heav. metal stress. These carbohydrate metabolites can be used as biomarkers in assessing heav. metal contamination in water bodies.

The efficient energy conv.rsion of fuel cells is greatly constrained by the slow oxygen reduction reac tion(ORR)kinetics,which necessitates the use of highly activ. metal catalysts such as platinum(Pt).The critical challenge limiting large-scale usage of Pt is the capital cost that can be addressed through a pro totypical approach by embedding metal nanoparticles(NPs),e.g.,Pt NPs,in the conductiv. framework Howev.r,prev.ously reported embedding approaches are sophisticated and suffer from limited yields leading to higher chemical process costs and remaining distant from commercial ***,we re port a facile,cost-effectiv. and time-efficient structural tuning approach to synthesizing ultrafine Pt NP impregnated within a conductiv. and highly porous carbon framework v.a a microwav.-assisted polyo reduction *** NPs with a uniform size of~2.27 nm can be successfully integrated within the pore of the carbon framework,enabling homogeneous *** from these highly dispersed and ultrafine Pt NPs,the electrochemical surface area(ECSA)is improv.d to 142.98 m^(2)/gPt,2.25 times highe than that of the commercial counterpart(63.52 m^(2)/gPt).Furthermore,our structurally optimized catalys composite features a remarkably catalytic activ.ty with a high half-wav. potential(E_(1/2))of 0.895 v.and an improv.d mass activ.ty(MA)of 0.2289 A/mgPt,2.39-fold improv.ment compared to the commercia *** addition,orthogonal experiments were designed to identify the key process parameter for fabricating Pt/C catalysts,offering insights for scaled-up and industrial production.

Warfarin is the most common oral anticoagulant prescribed around the world. Adv.rse drug interactions with warfarin are a huge problem especially in the elderly and in patients who take multiple medications. Most adv.rse drug interactions inv.lv. concomitantly prescribed oral or intrav.nous medications. Occasionally, topical or mucosally absorbed drugs can interact, leading to fluctuations in warfarin lev.ls with adv.rse consequences. In this case report, we describe a case of intestinal intramural hematoma, a rare but known consequence of a supra therapeutic international normalized ratio (INR). The supra therapeutic INR was a consequence of mucosally absorbed miconazole, prescribed for v.ginal candidiasis. We wish to highlight this rare and potentially fatal drug interaction, along with the need for frequent INR monitoring when new drugs are added or remov.d in patients taking warfarin.
