Low-and middle-income countries faced significant challenges in accessing COVID-19 vaccines during the early stages of the *** this study,we utilized an agestructured modeling approach to examine the implications of various vaccination strategies,vaccine prioritization,and vaccine rollout speeds in Thailand,an upper-middleincome country experiencing vaccine shortages during the early stages of the *** model directly compares the effectiveness of several vaccination strategies,including the heterologous vaccination where CoronaVac(CV)vaccine was administered as the first dose,followed by ChAdOx1 nCoV-19(AZ)vaccine as the second dose,under varying disease transmission *** found that the traditional AZ homologous vaccination was more effective than the CV homologous vaccination,regardless of disease transmission ***,combining CV and AZ vaccines via either parallel homologous or heterologous vaccinations was more effective than relying solely on AZ homologous ***,prioritizing vaccination for the elderly aged 60 years and above was the most effective way to reduce mortality when community transmission is *** the other hand,prioritizing workers aged 20e59 was most effective in lowering COVID-19 cases,irrespective of the transmission ***,despite the vaccine prioritization strategy,rapid vaccine rollout speeds were crucial in reducing COVID-19 infections and *** findings suggested that in low-and middle-income countries where early access to high-efficacy vaccines might be limited,obtaining any accessible vaccines as early as possible and using them in parallel with other higherefficacy vaccines might be a better strategy than waiting for and relying solely on higher-efficacy vaccines.

Modeling seasonal leptospirosis transmission and its association with rainfall and temperature in Thailand using time-series and ARIMAX analyses

Objective:To study the number of leptospirosis cases in relations to the seasonal pattern,and its association with climate ***:Time series analysis was used to study the time variations in the number of leptospirosis *** Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model was used in data curve fitting and predicting the next leptospirosis cases. Results:We found that the amount of rainfall was correlated to leptospirosis cases in both regions of interest,namely the northern and northeastern region of Thailand,while the temperature played a role in the northeastern region *** use of multivariate ARIMA(ARIMAX) model showed that factoring in rainfall(with an 8 months lag) yields the best model for the northern region while the model,which factors in rainfall(with a 10 months kg) and temperature(with an 8 months lag) was the best for the northeaslern ***:The models are able to show the trend in leptospirosis cases and closely fit the recorded data in both *** models can also be used to predict the next seasonal peak quite accurately.

In vitro interference of cefotaxime at subinhibitory concentrations on biofilm formation by nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae

Objective:To investigate the in vitro interference of cefotaxime at subinhibitory concentrations [sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations(MIC)] on biofilm formation by nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae(NTHi).Methods:The interference of subinhibitory concentrations of cefotaxime on biofilm formation of the clinical strong-biofilm forming isolates of NTHi was evaluated by a microtiter plate biofilm formation *** effect of sub-MIC cefotaxime on bacterial cell-surface hydrophobicity was determined using a standard microbial adhesion to n-hexadecane ***,the effects on bacterial adherence to human fibronectin and expression of bacterial adhesins were also ***:Subinhibitory concentrations of cefotaxime,both at 0.1× and 0.5× MIC levels,efficiently reduced the NTHi biofilm formation,and this effect was independent of decreasing bacterial ***-MIC cefotaxime also decreased bacterial cell-surface hydrophobicity and reduced adherence to human *** in the P2 and P6 gene expressions upon exposure to sub-MIC cefotaxime was also ***:Taken together,our results indicate that sub-MIC cefotaxime interferes with the formation of NTHi biofilm,and this effect is feasibly related to the interference with cell-surface hydrophobicity,fibronectin-binding activity as well as alteration of the P2 and P6 gene *** findings of the present study therefore provide a rationale for the use of subinhibitory concentrations of cefotaxime for treatment of NTHi-related diseases.

Trends of childhood diabetes in Southern Thailand: 20-year experience in a tertiary medical center

Background:The incidence and/or prevalence of both childhood diabetes and the percent of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) cases in children and young adolescents have been increasing *** study aimed to examine the 20-year trends of childhood diabetes in a single tertiary medical center in Southern ***:The medical records of pediatric diabetic patients,aged 0-15 years,diagnosed at Songklanagarind Hospital from 1995 to 2014 were retrospectively ***:During the 20-year period,156 children were diagnosed with DM:99 (63.4%) with T1DM,43 (27.6%) with T2DM,2 (1.3%) with neonatal diabetes,and 12 (7.7%) with secondary *** estimated incidence of new patients with diabetes per 100 000 per year doubled from 0.12 in 1995-2000,to 0.24-0.28 in 2001-2004,and further increased to 0.39-0.48 in 2005-2012 and 0.59-0.64 in 2013-2014;and also the proportion of T2DM cases increased from 10%-15% during 1995-2003 to 25%-30% during 2004-2008,and 35%-40% during *** the time of diagnosis,the fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin levels were significantly greater in T1DM than T2DM patients while the lipid profiles were more abnormal in T2DM than T1DM ***:The estimated incidences of both T1DM and T2DM in pediatric patients have increased markedly over the 20-year period,and also the percentage of T2DM cases,from 10%-15% in 1995 to 35%-40% in 2014.

Repeated vitrification/warming of human sperm gives better results than repeated slow programmable freezing

In this study, we compared the effects of repeated freezing/thawing of human sperm by our in-house method of rapid freezing with slow programmable freezing. Sperm samples from 11 normozoospermic subjects were processed through density gradients and divided into three aliquots： non-frozen, rapid freezing and slow programmable freezing. Sperm in the rapid freezing group had better motility and viability than those in the slow freezing group （P〈O.01） after the first, second and third cycles of freezing/thawing, but there was no difference in morphology. In the second experiment, rapid freezing was repeated three times in 20 subjects. The samples from each thawing cycle were evaluated for DNA fragmentation using the alkaline comet assay. DNA fragmentation began to increase considerably after the second cycle of freezing/thawing, but to a level that was not clinically important. In the third experiment, rapid freezing was done repeatedly in 10 subjects, until no motile sperm were observed after thawing. The median number of repeated freezing/thawing that yielded no motile sperm was seven （range： 5-8, mean： 6.8）. In conclusion, we demonstrated that repeated freezing/thawing of processed semen using our rapid freezing method gave better results than standard slow programmable freezing. This method can help maximize the usage of precious cryopreserved sperm samples in assisted reproduction technology.

Authorship in a scientific publication is an indicator of significant intellectual contribution in scientific *** of the discipline,it is important for research-related personnel to receive credit and take responsibility for their *** are currently several systems of listing authorship that arise from many factors such as research complexity,pressure to obtain funding,hierarchical structure,and *** of these may unfortunately lead to authorship *** awareness and understanding of authorship guidelines can help prevent abuses and *** Science and Technology Development Agency(NSTDA)is a national research agency of Thailand with about 2000 research staff *** research emphasis of the agency is mainly technology development for application in broad areas,ranging from engineering to medicine,including forensic *** conducted a survey to identify the level of awareness of NSTDA research staff and their authorship practices.A questionnaire was designed based on the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors(ICMJE)authorship guidelines and used to survey 15%of randomly selected NSTDA research *** 90%of them responded to the *** the respondents,60%were not sure about authorship *** presented with the ICMJE criteria,more than 90%agreed with the criteria except for the third one,approval of the final manuscript before submission,33%of respondents thought that authors are only responsible for their particular ***,nearly 80%agreed that every author is responsible for the integrity of the whole *** results offered an important foundation for forming a strategy to raise awareness about authorship in *** survey analysis,we organized several seminars and developed learning materials and an authorship guideline to increase the level of awareness of authorship for researchers.

Assessing Genetic Structure and Relatedness of Jerusalem Artichoke (<i>Helianthus tuberosus</i>L.) Germplasm with RAPD, ISSR and SRAP Markers

Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) is an old tuber crop with a recently renewed interest in multipurpose improvement, but little effort has been made to characterize its genetic resources. A study was conducted to assess genetic structure and genetic relatedness of 47 diverse Jerusalem artichoke accessions using RAPD, ISSR and SRAP markers. A total of 296 (87.1%) polymorphic bands were detected from 13 RAPD markers;92 (80%) from six ISSR primers;and 194 (88.6%) for nine combinations of SRAP primers. Five optimal clusters were inferred by the STRUCTURE program from the RAPD or ISSR data, while six optimal clusters were found from the SRAP data or combined marker data. Significant linear relationships between the distance matrices for all pairs of individual accessions were detected for all marker pairs and the estimated correlation coefficient was 0.40 for RAPD-ISSR, 0.53 for RAPD-SRAP, and 0.43 for ISSR-SRAP. Based on the combined data, the neighbor-joining clustering of the 47 accessions matched closely with those inferred from the STRUCTURE program. Three ancestral groups were observed for the Canadian germplasm. Most diverse germplasm harbored in the USA collection. These findings not only reveal the compatible patterns of genetic structure and relatedness inferred with three marker types, but also are useful for managing Jerusalem artichoke germplasm and utilizing diverse germplasm for genetic improvement.
