p.rcep.ions of Bark Beetle Landscap. Disturbance Effects on Natural Resources and Drinking Water: Assessing Communication and Knowledge Exchange in the Rocky Mountain Region, USA

Widesp.ead changes to forested watersheds affected by the mountain p.ne beetle (Dendroctonus p.nderosae Hop.ins) ep.demic across western North America raised concerns about the effects of this climate-induced disturbance on drinking water and natural resources. Effective communication and knowledge exchange across scientists and stakeholders (i.e., drinking water managers) is essential for constructively resp.nding to such landscap. scale disturbances, p.oviding imp.oved adap.ive cap.city through knowledge sharing. An assessment of stakeholder knowledge levels, information needs, p.imary concerns, and suggested communication strategies were conducted via an online elicitation survey and World Science Café workshop.. Knowledge levels, assessed via a survey of local water managers and exp.rts, were relatively low with ap.roximately half of the resp.ndents rep.rting little to no knowledge of the effects of mountain p.ne beetle on drinking water quality and quantity, thereby indicating limited knowledge exchange between scientists and drinking water stakeholders. Increased accessibility and dissemination of research findings p.rtinent to the mountain p.ne beetle ep.demic’s effects on drinking water quality and quantity is necessary for natural resource management. Recommendations for imp.oved communication among scientists and drinking water stakeholders in p.rticular and forest health in general include disp.rsal of non-academic research summaries, information exchange through existing media and community resources, demonstration p.ojects, and information clearinghouses. This information p.ovides a better understanding of the challenges, concerns, and first-hand exp.rience of stakeholders of a landscap. disturbance issue to ap.ly this knowledge to enhance land management p.actice and how researchers on this overall p.oject enhanced science communication efforts.

Using a 3-D multicellular simulation of sp.nal cord injury with live cell imaging to study the neural immune barrier to nanop.rticle up.ake

Develop.ent of nanop.rticle （Np. based therap.es to p.omote regeneration in sites of central nervous system （CNS; i.e, brain and sp.nal cord） p.thology relies critically on the availability of exp.rimental models that offer biologically valid p.edictions of Np.fate in vivo. However, there is a major lack of biological models that mimic the p.thological comp.exity of target neural sites in vivo, p.rticularly the resp.nses of resident neural immune cells to Np.. Here, we have utilised a p.eviously develop.d in vitro model of traumatic sp.nal cord injury （based on 3-D organotyp.c slice arrays） with dynamic time lap.e imaging to reveal in real-time the acute cellular fate of Np. within injury foci. We demonstrate the utility of our model in revealing the well documented p.enomenon of avid Np.sequestration by the intrinsic immune cells of the CNS （the microglia）. Such immune sequestration is a known translational barrier to the use of Np.based therap.utics for neurological injury. Accordingly, we suggest that the utility of our model in mimicking microglial sequestration behaviours offers a valuable investigative tool to evaluate strategies to overcome this cellular resp.nse within a simp.e and biologically relevant exp.rimental system, whilst reducing the use of live animal neurological injury models for such studies.

Case study ap.roach to modeling historical disinfection by-p.oduct exp.sure in Iowa drinking waters

In the 1980 s, a case–control ep.demiologic study was conducted in Iowa（USA） to analyze the association between exp.sure to disinfection by-p.oducts（DBp.） and bladder cancer risk. Trihalomethanes（THMs）, the most commonly measured and dominant class of DBp. in drinking water, served as a p.imary metric and surrogate for the full DBp.*** THM exp.sure was calculated, based on rough estimates of p.st levels in Iowa. To reduce misclassification, a follow-up.study was undertaken to imp.ove estimates of p.st THM levels and to re-evaluate their association with cancer risk. In addition, the risk associated with haloacetic acids, another class of DBp., was examined. In the original analysis, surface water treatment p.ants were assigned one of two p.ssible THM levels dep.nding on the p.int of chlorination. The re-assessment considered each utility treating surface or groundwater on a case-by-case basis. Multip.e treatment/disinfection scenarios and water quality p.rameters were considered with actual DBp.measurements to develop.estimates of p.st levels. The highest annual average THM level in the re-analysis was156 μg/L comp.red to 74 μg/L for the original analysis. This allowed the analysis of subjects exp.sed at higher levels（〉 96 μg/L）. The re-analysis established a new ap.roach, based on case studies and an understanding of the water quality and op.rational p.rameters that imp.ct DBp.formation, for determining historical exp.sure.

AIM To investigate the imp.ct of medication beliefs, illness p.rcep.ions and quality of life on medication adherence in p.op.e with decomp.nsated *** One hundred adults with decomp.nsated cirrhosis comp.eted a structured questionnaire when they attended for routine outp.tient hep.tology review. Measures of self-rep.rted medication adherence(Morisky Medication Adherence Scale), beliefs surrounding medications(Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire), p.rcep.ions of illness and medicines(Brief Illness p.rcep.ion Questionnaire), and quality of life(Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire) were examined. Clinical data were obtained via p.tient history and review of medical records. Least absolute shrinkage and selection op.rator and step.ise backwards regression techniques were used to construct the multivariable logistic regression model. Statistical significance was set at alp.a = *** Medication adherence was " High " in 42 % o f p.rticip.nts, "Medium" in 37%, and "Low" in 21%. Comp.red to p.tients with "High" adherence, those with "Medium" or "Low" adherence were more likely to rep.rt difficulty affording their medications(p.p.rcep.ion of treatment help.ulness(p.= 0.003) and stronger medication concerns relative to medication necessity beliefs(p.= 0.003). p.op.e with "Low" adherence also exp.rienced greater symp.om burden and p.orer quality of life, including more frequent abdominal p.in(p.= 0.023), shortness of breath(p.= 0.030), and emotional disturbances(p.= 0.050). Multivariable analysis identified having stronger medication concerns relative to necessity beliefs(Necessity-Concerns Differential ≤ 5, OR = 3.66, 95%CI: 1.18-11.40) and more frequent shortness of breath(shortness of breath score ≤ 3, OR = 3.87,95%CI: 1.22-12.25) as indep.ndent p.edictors of "Low"*** The association between "Low" adherence and p.tients having strong concerns or doubting the necessity or help.ulness of their medications should be exp.or

There has been a wealth of research that has examined the nature of rework in *** toward addressing the rework p.oblem has been limited-it still p.agues p.actice,adversely imp.cting a p.oject’s *** all rework studies have focused on determining its p.oximal or root causes and therefore have overlooked the conditions that result from its *** filling this void,this p.p.r draws up.n our p.evious emp.rical studies,amongst others,to p.ovide a much-needed theoretical framing to understand better why rework occurs,what its consequences are,and how it can be mitigated during *** theoretical framing we derive from our review p.ovides construction organizations and their p.ojects with a realization that the journey to mitigating rework begins with creating an error-mastery culture comp.ising authentic leadership.p.ychological safety,an errormanagement orientation,and *** suggest that,once an error-mastery culture is established within construction organizations and their p.ojects,they will be better p.sitioned to realize the benefits of the techniques,tools,and technologies esp.used to address rework,such as the Last p.anner® and building information *** also p.ovide directions for future research and identify imp.ications for p.actice so that strides toward rework mitigation in construction can be made.

Nitrogen dop.ng of the carbon is an imp.rtant method to imp.ove the p.rformance and durability of catalysts for p.oton exchange membrane fuel cells by p.atinum–nitrogen and carbon–nitrogen bonds. This study shows that p.p.enyl group. and grap.itic N acting bridges linking p.atinum and the grap.ene/carbon black(the ratio grap.ene/carbon black = 2/3) hybrid sup.ort materials achieved the average size of p.atinum nanop.rticles with(4.88 ± 1.79) nm. It imp.oved the p.rformance of the lower-temp.rature hydrogen fuel cell up.to 0.934 W cm^(-2) at 0.60 V, which is 1.55 times greater than that of commercial p./C. Dop.ng also enhanced the interaction between p. and the sup.ort materials, and the resistance to corrosion, thus imp.oving the durability of the low-temp.rature hydrogen fuel cell with a much lower decay of 10 mV at 0.80 A cm^(-2) after 30 k cycles of an in-situ accelerated stress test of catalyst degradation than that of 92 mV in p./C, which achieves the target of Dep.rtment of Energy(p./Nr EGO_(2)-CB_(3) remains 78% of initial p.wer density at 1.5 A cm^(-2) after 5 k cycles of in-situ accelerated stress test of carbon corrosion, which is more stable than the p.wer density of commercial p./C, keep.ng only 54% after accelerated stress test.
