Estimates of voluntary activation in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction:Effects of type of stimulator,number of stimuli,and quantification technique

Background:Accurate quantification of voluntary activation is important for understanding the extent of quadriceps dysfunction in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction(ACLR).Voluntary activation has been quantified using both percent activation derived from the interpolated twitch technique and central activation ratio(CAR)derived from the burst superimposition technique,as well as by using different types of electrical stimulators and pulse train ***,it is unclear how these parameters affect voluntary activation estimates in individuals with *** study was performed to fill this important knowledge gap in the anterior cruciate ligament ***:Quadriceps strength and voluntary activation were examined in 18 ACLR participants(12 quadriceps/patellartendon graft,6 hamstring tendon graft;time since ACLR:1.06±0.82 years,mean±SD)at 90°of knee flexion using 2 stimulators(Digitimer and Grass)and pulse train conditions(3-pulse and 10-pulse).Voluntary activation was quantified by calculating both CAR and percent ***:Results indicated that voluntary activation was significantly overestimated by CAR when compared with percent activation(ppulse train conditions when using percent activation;however,3-pulse stimuli resulted in greater overestimation than 10-pulse stimuli when using CAR(p=0.003).Voluntary activation did not differ between stimulators(p>0.05);however,the Digitimer evoked greater torque at rest than the Grass(ppercent activation derived from the interpolated twitch technique provides superior estimates of voluntary activation than CAR derived from burst superimposition and is less affected by pulse train conditions or stimulators in individuals with ACLR.

This work compares the four-wave mixing(FWM)effect in epitaxial quantum dot(QD)lasers grown on silicon with quantum well(QW)lasers.A comparison of theory and experiment results shows that the measured FWM coefficient is in good agreement with theoretical *** gain in signal power is higher for p-doped QD lasers than for undoped lasers,despite the same FWM *** to the near-zero linewidth enhancement factor,QD lasers exhibit FWM coefficients and conversion efficiency that are more than one order of magnitude higher than those of QW ***,this leads to self-mode locking in QD *** findings are useful for developing on-chip sources for photonic integrated circuits on silicon.

The interleukin-17 (IL-17) family of cytokines and receptors play central roles in host defense against infection, and development of inflammatory diseases1. The compositions and structures of functional IL-17 family ligand-receptor signaling assemblies remain unclear. Interleukin-17E (IL-17E or IL-25) is a key regulator of Th2 immune responses and driver of inflammatory diseases such as allergic asthma and requires both IL-17 receptor A (IL-17RA) and IL-17RB to elicit functional responses2. Here, we studied IL-25-IL-17RB binary and IL-25-IL-17RB-IL-17RA ternary complexes using a combination of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), single-molecule imaging, and cell-based signaling approaches. The IL-25-IL-17RB-IL-17RA ternary signaling assembly is a c2-symmetric complex in which the IL-25-IL-17RB homodimer is flanked by two "wing-like" IL-17RA co-receptors through a "tip-to-tip" geometry that is the key receptor-receptor interaction required for initiation of signal transduction.

The wild relatives of wheat （Triticum aestivum L.） contain tremendous amounts of potentially useful genes and represent a promising source of genetic diversity for wheat improvement （Bommineni and Jauhar, 1997）. Thinopyrum ponticum （popd.） Barkworth and D. R. Dewey [syn. Agropyron elongatum （Host） p. Beauv., Elytrigia pontica （podp.） Holub, Lophopy- rum ponticum （podp.） A. L6ve] （2n = 10x = 70）, has high crossability with various Triticum species. Numerous studies have shown that Th. ponticum carries many potentially valu- able resistance genes against biotic and abiotic stresses （Shannon, 1978; Cox, 1991; Zheng et al., 2014a,b）. Transferring the useful genes from Th. ponticum to common wheat through chromosome engineering had been a successful way to enhance the resistance of wheat to pests and diseases （Sharma et al., 1989; McIntosh, 1991）.

High prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths in Southern Belize-highlighting opportunity for control interventions

Objective:To assess prevalence and intensity of soil-transmitted helminths(STH) in school age children of two southern districts as baseline information prior to implement a deworming program against intestinal parasites as part of an integrated country development ***:Children randomly selected from urban and rural schools in Southern Belize provided one stool sample each,analysed by the Kato-Katz method to assess prevalence and intensity of STH *** Info software was used for data analysis;Chi-square test and Fischer exact test were applied to compare group proportions;pptive statistics were expressed as ***:A total of 500 children from 10 schools participated in the study from May to *** of STH ranged between 40%and 82%among schools,with a median of 59.2%;the majority of light intensity,and with 2.2%high intensity *** and Axaris infections presented similar frequency in children aged from 6 to 9 years old;hookworm infections tended to be more frequent in the older group 10 to 12 years *** significances(p≤0.01)were found in children in rural schools infected with any species of STH,in moderate Trichuris infections,in hookworm infections in rural areas with strong Mayan presence and in Ascaris infections in children of Mayan ***:High prevalence of STH in Southern Belize provided sound ground for implementing an integrated deworming control program.

Alcohol-associated liver disease(ALD)is a common chronic liver disease and major contributor to liver disease-related deaths *** its prevalence,there are few effective pharmacological options for the severe stages of this *** much pre-clinical research attention is paid to drug development in ALD,many of these experimental therapeutics have limitations such as poor pharmacokinetics,poor efficacy,or off-target side effects due to systemic *** means of addressing these limitations is through liver-targeted drug delivery,which can be accomplished with different platforms including liposomes,polymeric nanoparticles,exosomes,bacteria,and adenoassociated viruses,among *** platforms allow drugs to target the liver passively or actively,thereby reducing systemic circulation and increasing the‘effective dose’in the *** many studies,some clinical,have applied targeted delivery systems to other liver diseases such as viral hepatitis or hepatocellular carcinoma,only few have investigated their efficacy in *** review provides basic information on these liver-targeting drug delivery platforms,including their benefits and limitations,and summarizes the current research efforts to apply them to the treatment of ALD in rodent *** also discuss gaps in knowledge in the field,which when addressed,may help to increase the efficacy of novel therapies and better translate them to humans.

Lipogenesis in Huh7 cells is promoted by increasing the fructose: Glucose molar ratio

AIM: To determine whether hepatocyte lipogenesis, in an in vitro cell culture model, is modulated by adjusting culture media monosaccharide content and ***: Hepatocytes(Huh7), demonstrating glucose and fructose uptake and lipid biosynthesis, were incubated in culture media containing either glucose alone(0.65-0.72 mmol/L) or isosmolar monosaccharide(0.72 mmol/L) comprising fructose:glucose(F:G) molar ratios ranging from 0.58-0.67. Following a 24-h incubation, cells were harvested and analyzed for total protein, triglyceride(TG) and cholesterol(C) content. Significant differences(p ps were determined using analysis of variance followed by Dunnett's test for multiple ***: After a 24 h incubation period, Huh7 cell mass and viability among all experimental groups were not different. Hepatocytes cultured with increasing concentrations of glucose alone did not demonstrate a significant change either in C or in TG content. However, when the culture media contained increasing F:G molar ratios, at a constant total monosaccharideconcentration, synthesis both of C and of TG increased significantly [F:G ratio = 0.58, C/protein(μg/μg) = 0.13;F:G = 0.67, C/protein = 0.18, p protein(μg/μg) = 0.06; F:G ratio = 0.67, TG/protein= 0.11, p patocyte model, glucose or fructose plus glucose support total cell mass and lipogenic activity. Increasing the fructose:glucose molar ratio(but not glucose alone) enhances triglyceride and cholesterol synthesis. These investigations demonstrate fructose promotes hepatocellular lipogenesis, and they provide evidence supporting future, in vivo studies of fructose's role in the development of hepatic steatosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
