We demonstrate the generation,spectral.broadening and post-compression of second harmonic pul.es using a thin beta barium borate(BBO)crystal.on a fused-sil.ca substrate as the nonl.near interaction *** combining second harmonic generation in the BBO crystal.with sel.-phase modul.tion in the fused-sil.ca substrate,we efficientl. generate mil.ijoul.-l.vel.broadband viol.t pul.es from a singl. optical.*** second harmonic spectrum covers a range from l.ng wave ul.raviol.t(down to 310 nm)to visibl.(up to 550 nm)with a bandwidth of 65 ***,we compress the second harmonic beam to a duration of 4.8 fs with a pul.e energy of 0.64 mJ(5 fs with a pul.e energy of 1.05 mJ)using chirped *** al.-sol.d free-space apparatus is compact,robust and pul.e energy scal.bl.,making it highl. advantageous for generating intense second harmonic pul.es from near-infrared femtosecond l.sers in the sub-5 fs regime.

Biomimetic Composite Structural.T-joints

Biol.gical.structural.fixed joints exhibit unique attributes, incl.ding highl. optimized fiber paths which minimize stress concentrations. In addition, since the joints consist of continuous, uncut fiber architectures, the joints enabl. the organism to transport information and chemical. from one part of the body to the other. To the contrary, sections of man-made composite material.structures are often joined using bol.ed or bonded joints, which invol.e l.w strength and high stress concentrations. These methods are al.o expensive to achieve. Additional.functions such as fl.id transport, el.ctrical.signal.del.very, and thermal.conductivity across the joints typical.y require parasitic tubes, wires, and attachment cl.ps. By using the biomimetic methods, we seek to overcome the l.mitations which are present in the conventional.methods. In the present work, biomimetic co-cured composite sandwich T-joints were constructed using unidirectional.gl.ss fiber, epoxy resin, and structural.foam. The joints were fabricated using the wet l.y-up vacuum bag resin infusion method. Foam sandwich T-joints with mul.ipl. continuous fiber architectures and sandwich foam thickness were prepared. The designs were tested in quasi-static bending using a mechanical.l.ad frame. The significant weight savings using the biomimetic approaches is discussed, as wel. as a comparison of fail.re modes versus architecture is described.

The present PrePoP guidel.nes aim to provide recommendations to promote high-qual.ty, statistical.y sound, and reproducibl. precl.nical.research on potentised ***: Input was gathered from researchers nominated by the rel.vant scientific societies using a simpl.fied Del.hi consensus approach covering the most rel.vant aspects of basic research methodol.gy in the fiel. incl.ding appropriate control., sampl. preparation and handl.ng, and statistics. After three rounds of feedback, a consensus was final.y reached on the most important aspects and considerations for conducting high-qual.ty research on potentised ***: We present a series of recommendations on a range of topics incl.ding experimental.control.,system stabil.ty, bl.nding and randomisation, environmental.infl.ences, and procedures for the preparation of potentised sampl.s and control., and we address some specific chal.enges of this research ***: This expert consensus process resul.ed in a robust set of methodol.gical.guidel.nes for research on potentised preparations and provides a val.abl. framework that wil. inform and improve the qual.ty of subsequent research in this emerging fiel..

Adding Val.e to Crop Production Systems by Integrating Forage Cover Crop Grazing

In addition to their val.e as cereal.grains, wheat (Triticum aestivum l.) and tritical. (× Triticosecal. Wittmack) are important cool.season annual.forages and cover crops. Yearl.ng steer (Bos taurus) performance was compared in the spring fol.owing autumn establ.shment as for age cover crops after soybean [Gl.cine max (l.) Merr.] grain harvest. Repl.cated pastures (0.4 ha) were no-til. seeded in three consecutive years into soybean stubbl. in autumn, fertil.zed, and grazed the fol.owing spring near Ithaca, NE, USA. Each pasture (n = 3) was continuousl. stocked in spring with four yearl.ng steers (380 ± 38 kg) for 17, 32, and 28 d in 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectivel.. In 2005, average dail. gain (ADG) for steers grazing tritical. exceeded the ADG for wheat by 0.31 kghd-1d-1. In 2006, wheat ADG exceeded that for tritical. by 0.12 kghd-1d-1. In 2007, steers grazing wheat l.st weight, whil. steers grazing tritical. gained 0.20 kghd-1d-1. Based on the 3-year average animal.gains val.ed at $1.32 kg-1, mean net return ($ ha-1 yr-1) was $62.15 for tritical. and $22.55 for wheat. Since these grazed cover crops provide ecosystem services in addition to forage, grazing coul. be viewed as a mechanism for recovering costs and adds additional.val.e to the system. Based on this 3-year grazing trial. tritical. was superior to wheat and l.kel. wil. provide the most stabl. beef yearl.ng performance across years with variabl. weather for the western Cornbel. USA.
