For more than two decades rudimentary versions of the fixed sample and sequential search strategies have provided the primary theoretical foundation for the study of mate choice decisions by searchers. The theory that surrounds these models has expanded markedly over this time period. In this paper, we review and extend results derived from these models, with a focus on the empirical analysis of searcher behavior. The basic models are impractical for empirical purposes because they rely on the as- sumption that searchers--and, for applied purposes, researchers--assess prospective mates based on their quality, the fitness consequences of mate choice decisions. Here we expound versions of the models that are more empirically useful, reformulated to reflect decisions based on male phenotypic characters. For some organisms, it may be possible to use preference functions to de- rive predictions from the reformulated models and thereby avoid difficulties associated with the measurement of male quality per se. But predictions derived from the two models are difficult to differentiate empirically, regardless of how the models are formu- lated. Here we develop ideas that illustrate how this goal might be accomplished. In addition, we clarify how the variability of male quality should be evaluated and we extend what is known about how this variability influences searcher behavior under each model. more general difficulties associated with the empirical study of mate choice decisions by searchers are also discussed [Current Zoology 59 （2）： 184-199, 2013].

Administration of platelet rich plasma(PRP) and bone marrow aspirate concentrate(BmAC) has shown some promise in the treatment of neurological conditions;however, there is limited information on combined administration. As such, the purpose of this study was to assess safety and functional outcomes for patients administered combined autologous PRP and BmAC for spinal cord injury(SCI). This retrospective case series included seven patients who received combined treatment of autologous PRP and BmAC via intravenous and intrathecal administration as salvage therapy for SCI. Patients were reviewed for adverse reactions and clinical outcomes using the Oswestry Disability Index(ODI) for up to 1 year, as permitted by availability of follow-up data. Injury levels ranged from C3 through T11, and elapsed time between injury and salvage therapy ranged from 2.4 months to 6.2 years. Post-procedure complications were mild and rare, consisting only of self-limited headache and subjective memory impairment in one patient. Four patients experienced severe disability prior to PRP combined with BmAC injection, as evidenced by high(> 48/100) Oswestry Disability Index scores. Longitudinal Oswestry Disability Index scores for two patients with incomplete SCI at C6 and C7, both of whom had cervical spine injuries, demonstrated a decrease of 28–40% following salvage therapy, representing an improvement from severe to minimal disability. In conclusion, intrathecal/intravenous co-administration of PRP and BmAC resulted in no significant complications and may have had some clinical benefits. Larger clinical studies are needed to further test this method of treatment for patients with SCI who otherwise have limited meaningful treatment options. Distributed sparse bundle adjustment algorithm based on three-dimensional point partition and asynchronous communication

Sparse bundle adjustment(SBA) is a key but time-and memory-consuming step in three-dimensional(3 D) reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a 3 D point-based distributed SBA algorithm(DSBA) to improve the speed and scalability of SBA. The algorithm uses an asynchronously distributed sparse bundle adjustment(A-DSBA)to overlap data communication with equation computation. Compared with the synchronous DSBA mechanism(SDSBA), A-DSBA reduces the running time by 46%. The experimental results on several 3 D reconstruction datasets reveal that our distributed algorithm running on eight nodes is up to five times faster than that of the stand-alone parallel SBA. Furthermore, the speedup of the proposed algorithm(running on eight nodes with 48 cores) is up to41 times that of the serial SBA(running on a single node).

Oxygen uptake plays a crucial role in the evaluation of endurance performance during exercise and is extensively utilized for metabolic assessment. This study records the oxygen uptake during the exercise phase (i.e., ascending or descending) of the stair exercise, utilizing an experimental dataset that includes ten participants and covers various exercise periods. Based on the designed experiment protocol, a non-parametric modeling method with kernel-based regularization is generally applied to estimate the oxygen uptake changes during the switching stairs exercise, which closely resembles daily life activities. The modeling results indicate the effectiveness of the non-parametric modeling approach when compared to fixed-order models in terms of accuracy, stability, and compatibility. The influence of exercise duration on estimated fitness reveals that the model of the phase-oxygen uptake system is not time-invariant related to respiratory metabolism regulation and muscle fatigue. Consequently, it allows us to study the humans’ conversion mechanism at different metabolic rates and facilitates the standardization and development of exercise prescriptions.

We introduce a fast solver for the phase field crystal(PFC)and functionalized Cahn-Hilliard(FCH)equations with periodic boundary conditions on a rectangular domain that features the preconditioned Nesterov’s accelerated gradient descent(PAGD)*** discretize these problems with a Fourier collocation method in space,and employ various second-order schemes in *** observe a significant speedup with this solver when compared to the preconditioned gradient descent(PGD)*** the PAGD solver,fully implicit,second-order-in-time schemes are not only feasible to solve the PFC and FCH equations,but also do so more efficiently than some semi-implicit schemes in some cases where accuracy issues are taken into *** computations of four different schemes for the PFC and FCH equations are conducted and the results indicate that,for the FCH experiments,the fully implicit schemes(midpoint rule and BDF2 equipped with the PAGD as a nonlinear time marching solver)perform better than their ImEX versions in terms of computational cost needed to achieve a certain *** the PFC,the results are not as conclusive as in the FCH experiments,which,we believe,is due to the fact that the nonlinearity in the PFC is milder nature compared to the FCH *** also discuss some practical matters in applying the *** introduce an averaged Newton preconditioner and a sweeping-friction strategy as heuristic ways to choose good preconditioner *** sweeping-friction strategy exhibits almost as good a performance as the case of the best manually tuned parameters.

Detecting accidental punctures and lacerations during cholecystectomy in large datasets: Two methods of analysis

Background: After the Institute of medicine(IOm) report To Err Is Human highlighted the impact of medical errors, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality(AHRQ) developed Patient-Safety Indicators(PSI) to improve quality by identifying potential inpatient safety problems. PSI-15 was created to study accidental punctures and lacerations(APL), but PSI-15 may underestimate APLs in populations of patients. This study compares PSI-15 with a more inclusive approach using a novel composite of secondary diagnostic and procedural codes. methods: We used Nationwide Inpatient Sample(NIS) data(20 0 0–2012) from AHRQ’s Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project(H-CUP). We analyzed PSI-15-positive and-negative cholecystectomies. Cross tabulations identified codes that were significantly more frequent among PSI-15-positive cases; these secondary diagnostic and procedural codes were selected as candidate members of a composite marker(Cm) of APL. We chose cholecystectomy patients for study because this is one of the most common general operations, and the large size of NIS allows for meaningful analysis of infrequent occurrences such as APL rates. Results: Cm identified 1.13 times more APLs than did PSI-15. Patients with Cm-detected APLs were significantly older and had worse mortality, comorbidities, lengths of stay, and charges than those detected with PSI-15. Further comparison of these two approaches revealed that time-series analysis for both APL markers revealed parallel trends, with inflections in 2007, and lowest APL rates in July. Conclusions: Although Cm may yield more false positives, it appears more inclusive, identifying more clinically significant APLs, than PSI-15. Both measures presented similar trends over time, arguing against inflation in PSI-15 reporting. While arguably less specific, Cm may increase sensitivity for detecting APL events during cholecystectomies. Aim: To assess the safety profile and practice trend of autologous costal cartilage harvest by facial plastic surgeons in the United States (US).methods: A 10-question online survey was distributed by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to its ***: Of the 2,639 members, 2,379 received the survey with 137 (5.76%) members responded. The majority (33.6%)of the respondents were expert facial plastic surgeons. One hundred and nine (79.6%) of the respondents performed rib harvest with 49.6% of them performing the procedure at a hospital facility. Among them, 21.5% exclusively performed their surgery at an ambulatory surgical center not physically attached to a hospital while 6.67% of them at the in-office accredited operating room. When comparing techniques, 64.7% performed only full-thickness rib grafts vs. 12.0%harvesting partial-thickness rib grafts. most used an incision length between 2.1 and 4 cm (64.4%) while 2 surgeons used m incision. The occurrence of pneumothorax after autologous rib harvest remained low (most (73.1%).Regarding safety practices of the surgeons, only 24.6% would order a chest X-ray post-operatively while 54.5% would not. In addition, 58.7% of respondents never kept their patients overnight for observation after autologous rib grafting while 15.0% always would. For pain management, most respondents (50.4%) did not utilize any additional analgesia protocol besides oral pain ***: Two thirds of the US facial plastic surgeons performed autologous costal cartilage harvest in a hospital setting. Routine chest imaging or overnight observation post-operatively was not warranted as the percentage of pneumothorax remained low and pain control was adequate.
