Architectural quality of the productive facades integrating photovoltaic and vertical farming systems: Survey among experts in Singapore

Buildings could play a critical role in energy and food production while making highdensity cities more *** facades(PFs),as flexible and multi-functional systems integrating photovoltaic(PV)and vertical farming(VF)systems,could contribute to transforming buildings and communities from consumers to *** study analyses the architectural quality of the developed PF concept drawing on the findings of a web-survey conducted among experts e building professionals in *** developed design variants are compared with regards to key design aspects such as facade aesthetics,view from the inside,materialisation,ease of operation,functionality and overall architectural *** study also compares and discusses the results of the web-survey with the results of a previously conducted door-to-door survey among the potential users-residents of the Housing&Development Board(HDB)*** findings confirm an overall acceptance of the PF concept and reveal a need for synergetic collaboration between architects/designers and other building *** on the defined PF design framework and the results of the two surveys,a series of recommendations and improved PF prototypes are proposed for further assessment and implementation in order to foster their scalability from buildings into communities and cities.

Deep convolutional autoencoders as generic feature extractors in seismological applications

The idea of using a deep autoencoder to encode seismic waveform features and then use them in different seismological applications is *** this paper,we designed tests to evaluate this idea of using autoencoders as feature extractors for different seismological applications,such as event discrimination(i.e.,earthquake *** waveforms,earthquake *** waveforms),and phase *** tests involve training an autoencoder,either undercomplete or overcomplete,on a large amount of earthquake waveforms,and then using the trained encoder as a feature extractor with subsequent application layers(either a fully connected layer,or a convolutional layer plus a fully connected layer)to make the *** comparing the performance of these newly designed models against the baseline models trained from scratch,we conclude that the autoencoder feature extractor approach may only outperform the baseline under certain conditions,such as when the target problems require features that are similar to the autoencoder encoded features,when a relatively small amount of training data is available,and when certain model structures and training strategies are *** model structure that works best in all these tests is an overcomplete autoencoder with a convolutional layer and a fully connected layer to make the estimation.

Malaria is one of the deadliest infectious diseases in the world. Immune responses to Plasmodium falciparum malaria vary among individuals and between populations. Human genetic variation in immune system genes is likely to play a role in this heterogeneity. Natural killer (NK) cells produce inflammatory cytokines in response to malaria infection, kill intraerythrocytic Plasmodium falciparum parasites by cytolysis, and participate in the initiation and development of adaptive immune responses to plasmodial infection. These functions are modulated by interactions between killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) and human leukocyte antigens (HLAs). Therefore, variations in KIR and HLA genes can have a direct impact on NK cell functions. Understanding the role of KIRs and HLAs in immunity to malaria can help to better characterize antimalarial immune responses. In this review, we summarize the different KIRs and HLAs associated with immunity to malaria thus far.

Interferon therapy in hepatitis cleading to chronic type 1 diabetes

AIM: To review the prevalence,clinical data and course of interferon-associated type 1 diabetes in chronic hepatitis c virus(HcV) ***: Search of all interferon(INF)-related type 1diabetes mellitus(T1DM) cases published in the English literature from 1992 to December 2013 according to the key words: chronic hepatitis c infection,diabetes mellitus type 1,insulin dependent diabetes mellitus,and interferon *** found 107 cases and analyzed their clinical and laboratory data and long-term *** to the predominance of cases described in Japanese literature,we analyzed separately cases of caucasian and Japanese *** addition we describe a representative case with HcV who developed INFrelated T1 ***: Our data show that INF treatment increases the risk of developing T1 DM by 10-18 fold compared with the corresponding general population and the median age of onset was 43 years(range: 24-66 years) in caucasians and 52 years(range: 45-63 years) in *** patients developed T1 DM during INF treatment,after a median time-period of 4.2 and 5.7 mo in caucasian and Japanese groups,*** clinical course was characterized by a fulminant course with abrupt severe hyperglycemia or ketoacidosis,a high titer of anti-islet autoantibodies and almost all patients(105/107) permanently required insulin therapy with a follow-up of up to 4 years.A substantial number of patients had evidence for other autoimmune disorders mainly thyroid diseases(25% and 31% in caucasian and Japanese groups,respectively).cONcLUSION: INF-associated T1 DM in HcV has a fulminant course,often associated with other autoimmune diseases,and results almost inevitably in permanent insulin therapy requirement.

Jennifer Eichman＇s rich and insightful book sheds significant new light on the ethical and religious aspirations, practices, and self-understanding of elite men in late Ming china. This book makes a vital contribution to our understanding of the relationship between Buddhism and confucianism, and, indeed, what Buddhism and confucianism meant in practice. One key to the book＇s success is Eichman＇s use of a trove of letters between the eminent monk Lianchi Zhuhong （1535-1615） and his many correspondents. Unlike ＂prescriptive＂ treatises and essays, these more ＂descriptive＂ sources enable Eichman to examine the questions, difficulties, compromises, and nuances that made up real lives of religious men in a complex society. The letters allow her to access a network of interactions that sustained a geographically diffuse ＂fellowship＂ which roughly spanned 158o-162o. It is the ambitions and debates of the men who constituted this fellowship that Eichman chronicles. Her book is a powerful challenge to a number of widely held views, such as a belief in the decline of Buddhism in the Ming dynasty, the association of confucianism with ethics and Buddhism with metaphysics,

Dear Editor, Kai Wang and Linda B cottler recently commented on our article entitled, ＂The association between sexual function and prostate cancer risk in US veterans＂ published in Asian Journal *** made the good point that sexual function could be a clinical symptom of low serum testosterone, and that men with low testosterone may be using testosterone replacement therapy （TRT） which could be confounding the associations between sexual function and prostate cancer risk.

Resection and reconstruction of pelvic and extremity soft tissue sarcomas with major vascular involvement: current concepts

Soft tissue sarcoma accounts for approximately 1% of all cancers diagnosed annually in the United States. When these rare malignant mesodermal tumours arise in the pelvis and extremities, they may potentially encase or invade large calibre vascular structures. This presents a major challenge in terms of safe excision while also leaving acceptable surgical margins. In recent times, the trend has been towards limb salvage with vascular reconstruction in preference to amputation. Newer orthopaedic and vascular reconstructive techniques including both synthetic and autogenous graft reconstruction have made complex limb-salvage surgery feasible. Despite this, limb-salvage surgery with concomitant vascular reconstruction remains associated with higher rates of post-operative complications including infection and amputation. In this review we describe the initial presentation and investigation of patients presenting with soft tissue sarcomas in the pelvis and extremities, which involve vascular structures. We further discuss the key surgical reconstructive principles and techniques available for the management of these complex tumours, drawn from our institution's experience as a national tertiary referral sarcoma service.

The catalysis of the Hajos-Parrish reaction by cis-and trans-4,5-ethano-proline was explored experimentally and computationally with DFT(ωB97X-D and MN15)and DLPNO-ccSD(T).Both of the new catalysts are as active as proline or cis-and trans-4,5-methano-proline,with the trans-ethano-proline being as enantioselective as proline.A thorough theoretical analysis of the electronic factors influencing catalysis is reported.
