Lessons learned from the Youngstown, Ohio induced earthquake sequence from January 2011 to January 2012

The Youngstown earthquake sequence of 2011 is one of the clearest examples of inadvertently induced seismicity for which detailed documentation is *** this paper,we investigate(i) likely stress states in the vicinity of the injection well,(ii) a range of likely permeability scenarios,and(iii) relatively simple methods by which induced seismicity can be evaluated and *** use relocated hypocenters from the seismic sequence to construct a basement fault structure,which is then used to serve as a reference surface within the basement,and on which we calculate the effects of pore pressure changes induced by the injection activities of the Northstar #1 injection *** also deduce an in situ(preinjection) strike-slip stress regime,where ρ2≈ρ3,and it is consistent with both recent earthquake data and published stress estimates for the *** the reactivation characteristics of the basement are known or assumed,a critical or threshold slip tendency can be determined and the basement faults can be analyzed for the likelihood of reactivation in a perturbed pore pressure *** of well injection pressures and simulated pore pressure perturbations within the basement below the injection well indicates that permeability anisotropy is necessary to generate sufficient pore pressure perturbation to induce fault *** of the well’s injection history show that our estimate of in situ stress state,coupled with a highly anisotropic permeability structure,can generate sufficient pore pressure perturbation on the inferred basement structure to cause reactivation,potentially slipping an area of approximately 4×10~5 m~2.

Diagnostic accuracy of tests for Helicobacter pylori in an Alaska Native population

AIm:To evaluate the accuracy of two non-invasivetests in a population of Alaska Native persons. Highrates of Helico bacter pylori(H. pylori) infection,H. pylori treatment failure,and gastric cancer in this population necessitate documentation of infection status atmultiple time points over a patient's ***:In 280 patients undergoing endoscopy,H. pylori was diagnosed by culture,histology,rapidurease test,13C urea breath test(UBT) ,and immuno-globulin G antibodies to H. pylori in serum. The performances of 13C-UBT and antibody test were compared to a gold standard defined by a positive H. pylori testby culture or,in case of a negative culture result,bypositive histology and a positive rapid urease ***:The sensitivity and specificity of the 13C-UBT were 93% and 88%,respectively,relative to thegold standard. The antibody test had an equivalents ensitivity of 93% with a reduced specificity of 68%.The false positive results for the antibody test were as-sociated with previous treatment for an H. pylori infection [relative risk(RR) = 2.8]. High levels of antibodiesto H. pylori were associated with chronic gastritis and male gender,while high scores in the 13C-UBT testwere associated with older age and with the H. pyloribacteria load on histological examination(RR = 4.4) .CONCLUSION:The 13C-UBT out performed the anti-body test for H. pylori and could be used when a non-invasive test is clinically necessary to document treatment out come or when monitoring for reinfection.

Responses to oral glucose challenge differ by physical activity volume and intensity: A pilot study

Background:One-hour postprandial hyperglycemia is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular *** activity(PA)has short-term beneficial effects on post-meal glucose *** study compared the oral glucose tolerance test results of 3 groups of people with habitually different levels of ***:Thirty-one adults without diabetes(age 25.9±6.6 years;body mass index 23.8±3.8 kg/m^2;mean±SD)were recruited and divided into 3 groups based on self-reported PA volume and intensity:low activitymin/day of moderate-intensity activity(n=11),moderately active≥30 min/day of moderate-intensity PA(n=10),and very active≥60 min/day of PA at high intensity(n=10).Participants completed an oral glucose tolerance test(50 g glucose)with capillary blood samples obtained at baseline,15 min,30 min,45 min,60 min,90 min,and 120 min ***:There were no significant differences between groups for age or body fat percentage or glycated hemoglobin(p>0.05).The groups were significantly different in terms of baseline glucose level(p=0.003)and,marginally,for gender(p=0.053)and BmI(p=0.050).There was a statistically significant effect of PA on the 1-h postprandial glucose results(p=0.029),with differences between very active and low activity groups(p=0.008)but not between the moderately active and low activity groups(p=0.360),even when baseline glucose level and gender differences were accounted *** incremental area under the curve there was no significant effect of activity group once gender and body fat percentage had been accounted for(p=0.401).Those in the low activity group took 15 min longer to reach peak glucose level than those in the very active group(p=0.012).Conclusion:The results suggest that high levels of PA have a beneficial effect on postprandial blood glucose profiles when compared to low and moderate levels of activity.

INFLUENCE OF TWINNING AND DISLOCATION GLIDE DURING CREEP OF EQUIAXED AND LAmELLAR TiAl ALLOYS

The creep deformation of two near γ titanium aluminide alloys with equiaxed and lamellar structures have been studied to understand their behaviour as a function of microstructural evolution during the early stages of creep. The lamellar alloys exhibit more pronounced hardening during the primary stage of creep leading to a much better creep resistance and a minimum creep rate two orders of magnitude lower than that of the equiaxed alloys. TEm observations have confirmed that the active deformation mechanisms are the same for both alloys and microstructural states, namely extensive slip of single 1/2〈110〉 dislocations and mechanical twinning. The latter has been comfirmed to occur in a fraction of the grains that never exceeds 50% while 1/2〈110〉 dislocations are active within all the γ grains. The twins are only responsible for a small amount of strain but they lead to a subdivision of the microstructure and determine (directly or indirectly) the hardening process observed during the primary stage of creep. During the secondary stage the creep rate is determined by the unblocking of pinned dislocations by processes such as a pipe diffusion or cross slip that allow thermally activated glide of 1/2〈110〉 dislocations within the γ matrix.

The application of machine learning models to predict material properties is determined by the availability of high-quality *** present an expert-curated dataset of lithium ion conductors and associated lithium ion conductivities measured by *** *** dataset has 820 entries collected from 214 sources;entries contain a chemical composition,an expert-assigned structural label,and ionic conductivity at a specific temperature(from 5 to 873°C).There are 403 unique chemical compositions with an associated ionic conductivity near room temperature(15–35°C).The materials contained in this dataset are placed in the context of compounds reported in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database with unsupervised machine learning and the Element movers *** dataset is used to train a CrabNet-based classifier to estimate whether a chemical composition has high or low ionic *** classifier is a practical tool to aid experimentalists in prioritizing candidates for further investigation as lithium ion conductors.

Does Resisted Sled Towing Improve the Physical Qualities of Elite Youth Soccer Players of Differing maturity Status?

Purpose Sled towing has been shown to be an effective method to enhance the physical qualities in youth *** aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a 6-week sled towing intervention on muscular strength,speed and power in elite youth soccer players of differing maturity *** Seventy-three male elite youth soccer players aged 12-18 years(Pre-Peak Height Velocity[PHV]n = 25;Circa-PHV n = 24;Post-PHV n = 24)from one professional soccer academy participated in this *** assessments(10 m and 30 m),countermovement jump and isometric mid-thigh pull were undertaken before(T1)and after(T2)a 6-week *** training intervention consisted of 6 weeks(2xper week,10 sprints over 20 m distance)of resisted sled towing(linear progression 10%-30%of body mass)during the competitive *** regression models analysed differences between T1 and T2 within each maturity *** There were minimal changes in strength,speed and power(P=0.35-0.80)for each maturity group across the 6-week *** there were changes with greater certainty,they are unlikely to represent real effect due to higher regres-sion to the mean(RTm).Conclusion It appears that a 6-week sled towing training programme with loadings of 10%-30%body mass only maintains physical qualities in elite youth soccer players pre-,circa-,and *** research is required to determine the effectiveness of this training method in long-term athletic development programmes.
