Introduction:The manifestations of syphilis are varied,and serology can establish the diagnosis early,especially in rare *** report a case of chancre redux(a rare recurrence of primary syphilis),which was embedded within a secondary syphilitic penile skin *** were missed opportunities at earlier diagnosis as serology for syphilis was not *** presentation:A 56-year-old man presented with thickened penile plaques for five *** reported a small penile ulcer approximately one month *** was no history of other skin lesions or ***,clinically there was an asymptomatic,indurated ulcer embedded within a plaque which was swab-positive for syphilis by PcR.A punch biopsy of a plaque was spirochaete-positive using an immunoperoxidase *** patient’s lesions resolved three weeks after treatment with intramuscular benzathine ***:Uncommonly reported even in the preantibiotic era,chancre redux is now *** ulcer usually recurs at or near the site of the original chancre,and has similar morphological *** skin lesions of secondary syphilis can exhibit remarkable morphological *** most common skin manifestation,a generalized macular rash,was not present at any time in this ***,there were only a couple of nonspecific penile *** biopsy is performed,histologic findings are variable,though typically the inflammatory infiltrate includes plasma cells.A special immunoperoxidase stain can highlight spirochaetes in biopsy ***:This case highlights the importance of considering syphilis in the differential diagnosis of persistent,atypical penile lesions and underscores the need for appropriate serological testing in such instances.

Isolating higher yielding and more stable rice genotypes in stress environments: fine-tuning a selection method using production and resilience score indices

In Asia, the rice crop sustains millions of people. However, growing demand for this crop needs to be met while simultaneously reducing its water consumption to cope with the effects of climate change. Lowland cropping systems are the most common and productive but have particularly high water requirements. High-yielding rice genotypes adapted to drier environments(such as rainfed or aerobic rice ecosystems) are needed to increase the water use efficiency of cropping. Identifying these genotypes requires fast and more accurate selection methods. It is hypothesized that applying a new quantitative selection method(the score index selection method), can usefully compare rice yield responses over different years and stress intensities to select genotypes more rapidly and efficiently. Applying the score index to previously published rice yield data for 39 genotypes grown in no-stress and two stress environments, identified three genotypes(ARB 8, IR55419-04 and ARB 7) with higher and stable yield under moderate to severe stress conditions. These genotypes are postulated to be better adapted to stress environment such as upland and aerobic environments. Importantly, the score index selection method offers improved precision than the conventional breeding selection method in identifying genotypes that are well-suited to a range of stress levels within the target environment.

Developing a new agenda for increased food and climate security

In many countries, political and environmental pressures are currently combining to generate a perfect storm of circumstances that is reducing food availability, increasing food costs and thereby reducing the availability of food to many. The UK is currently considering new national food and land management policies, and attention is also being given to legislation to address diet-related health issues. Many now argue for a revolution in UK farming practices to reduce their impact on the natural environment. The UK is not alone in facing these and other challenges. Both the contribution of agriculture to greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions and the effects of climate change on food production are issues receiving worldwide *** agricultural practices can result in greater c capture, reduced GHG emissions, enhanced soil quality and enhanced biodiversity. However, it is questioned if such farming systems will be productive enough to feed a growing population with the food required for social and health benefits. To fully exploit the impact of new plant science in farmer fields, it is imperative to effectively link science to farming practices and conduct a broader conversation around the food revolution with social scientists and with the general public.

Large-Scale Weather Systems: A Future Research Priority

A brief assessment is provided of both the case against and the case for assigning priority to research on large-scale weather systems （LSWS）. The three-fold case against is based upon： the emergence of new overarching themes in environmental science; the fresh emphasis upon other sub-disciplines of the atmospheric science; and the mature state of research and prediction of LSWS. The case for is also supported by three arguments. First is the assertion that LSWS research should not merely be an integral but a major component of future research related to both the new overarching themes and the other sub-disciplines. Second recent major developments in LSWS research, as epitomized by the paradigm shifts in the prediction strategy for LSWS and the emergence of the potential vorticity perspective, testify to the theme＇s on-going vibrancy. Third the field＇s future development, as exemplified by the new international THORPEX （The Observing System Research and Predictability Experiment） programme, embodies a perceptive dovetailing of intellectually challenging fundamental research with directed application（s） of societal and economic benefit. It is thus inferred that LSWS research, far from being in demise, will feature at the forefront of the new relationship between science and society.

contaminants,such as polychlorinated biphenyls(PcBs),polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs),heavy metals,and per and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs),primarily reach the Arctic through long-range atmospheric and oceanic ***,local sources within the Arctic also contribute to the levels observed in the environment,including legacy sources and new sources that arise from activities associated with increasing commercial and industrial *** city of Iqaluit in Frobisher Bay,Nunavut(canada),has seen rapid population growth and associated development during recent decades yet remains a site of interest for ocean protection,where Inuit continue to harvest country *** the present study,seven dated marine sediment cores collected in Koojesse Inlet near Iqaluit,and from sites in inner and outer Frobisher Bay,respectively,were analyzed for total mercury(THg),major and trace elements,PAHs,PcBs,and *** sedimentary record in Koojesse Inlet shows a period of Aroclor 1260-like PcB input concurrent with military site presence in the 1950e60s,followed by decades of input of pyrogenic PAHs,averaging about ten times background ***-surface sediments in Koojesse Inlet also show evidence of transient local-source inputs of THg and PFASs,and recycling or continued slow release of PcBs from legacy land-based *** in PFAS congener composition clearly distinguish the local sources from long-range *** Koojesse Inlet but still in inner Frobisher Bay,9.2 km from Iqaluit,sediments showed evidence of both local source(PcB)and longrange *** outer Frobisher Bay,an up-core increase in THg and PFASs in sediments may be explained by ongoing inputs of these contaminants from long-range *** context for ocean protection and country food harvesting in this region of the Arctic clearly involves both local sources and long-range transport,with past human activities leaving a long legacy insofar as levels of persistent o

Rapid growth in a large cambrian apex predator

Despite the importance of ontogenetic data on early diverging euarthropods to our understanding of the ecology and evolution of past life, the data are distinctly lacking, as reconstructing life histories of fossil animals is often challenging. Here we report the growth trajectory of frontal appendages of the apex predator Amplectobelua symbrachiata, one of the most common radiodont arthropods from the early cambrian chengjiang biota(c. 520 Ma) of china. Analysis of 432 specimens(9.1–137.1 mm length; 1.3–25.6 mm height) reveals that appendages grew isometrically, with an estimated maximum size of the whole animal of c. 90 cm. Individuals grew rapidly compared to extant arthropods, as assessed using the electronic length-frequency analysis(ELEFAN) approach. Therefore, we show that the cambrian apex predator A. symbrachiata was an extremely fast-growing arthropod, with an unusual life history strategy that formed as part of the escalatory ‘arms race’ that shaped the cambrian explosion over 500 Ma.

Effect of austenitizing condition on mechanical properties,microstructure and precipitation behavior of AISI H13 steel

The effects of austenitizing temperature(1223,1303,and 1373 K)and holding time(1-1500 s)on the microstructure,mechanical properties,and precipitation behavior of the H13 hot work die steel were *** results indicate a softening phenomenon when H13 steel is austenitized at 1303 K beyond 900 s and 1373 K beyond 600 s,*** the sample held for 1200 s,the tensile strength is found capable of reaching up to 2.2 GPa when quenched from a temperature above 1303 ***,prior-austenite grain size increases with the increase in austenitizing *** kinetic behavior of the precipitates(mainly Mc-type carbides)in H13 steel could be elaborated through the principles set forth by the Arrhenius and Avrami ***,the comprehensive strengthening of the H13 steel was discussed in *** results show that the activation energy of the transformed fraction of carbides is higher than that of the diffusion process for common alloying elements(cr,V,Mo,and Ni)found in the *** suggests that it would be difficult for precipitates to dissolve into the matrix when H13 steel is austenitized at high *** the increasing austenitizing temperature,the precipitation fraction decreases,and the dislocation density *** dislocation strengthening is regarded as the dominant strengthening contributed to yield strength in as-quenched H13 steel.
