Knowledge of Risk Factors for Hypertension among University Students in Northwestern Tanzania: A Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction: Obesity, excessive alcohol use, cigarette smoking, a lack of physical activity, stress, and an unhealthy diet are modifiable risk factors linked to hypertension. Non-modifiable risk factors for hypertension include older age and a family history of hypertension. The purpose of this study was to assess university students’ knowledge of hypertension risk factors. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at St. Augustine University of Tanzania. A pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Out of a total score of eight, a score of four or more was considered good knowledge, and a score of less than four was considered poor. All sociodemographic characteristics were included in logistic regression to calculate the adjusted odds ratio. Results: A total of 390 undergraduate students participated in this study. Most of the participants 266 (68.2%) identified stress as a risk factor for hypertension. The median (IQR) knowledge score was 2 (2 - 3). Overall, only 43 (11.0%) of the participants had good knowledge of risk factors for hypertension. However, none of the sociodemographic factors were associated with a good level of knowledge of risk factors for hypertension. Conclusion: Our findings highlight poor knowledge of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for hypertension among university students in northwestern Tanzania. Only stress and older age were known by more than half of the students as risk factors for hypertension. To reduce the burden of hypertension, it is crucial for prevention and control programs to target improving university students’ knowledge of risk factors for hypertension.

Introduction: Cotrimoxazole Prophylactic Therapy (CPT) compliance lowers the risk of opportunistic infections and other Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)-related diseases. The aim of this study was to examine factors that influence compliance with CPT among HIV patients in the Care and Treatment Clinic (CTC) at Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) in Mwanza, Tanzania. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the BMC between April 1, 2021, and June 30, 2021. Data were collected using face-to-face interviews and a semi-structured questionnaire. Data are presented in frequency, percentages, and cross-tabulation tables. A P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of compliance with CPT by self-reported measurement was 158 (63.7%). Most CPT-compliant participants were more likely to have a spouse who is familiar with CPT, have a family member who is aware of their HIV status, and be aware of the benefits of CPT. The majority of participants who complied with CPT were more likely to have experienced counseling during refill, felt that the length of time spent seeing doctors for treatment was reasonable, and received accurate information from them. Conclusion: Most adult HIV patients attending CTC at BMC were reported to be in compliance with CPT. These findings suggest that improving social support and patient-provider communication may be effective strategies for improving compliance with CPT among HIV patients.

Due to the growing need for sustainable and ultra-high-strength construction materials,scientists have created an innovative ultra-high-performance concrete called geopolymer based ultra-highperformance concrete(gUHPC).Besides,in the last few decades,there have been a lot of explosions and ballistic attacks around the world,which have killed many civilians and fighters in border *** this context,this article reviews the fresh state and mechanical properties of ***,the ingredients of gUHPC and fresh properties such as setting time and flowability are briefly ***,the review of compressive strength,flexure strength,tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of fibrous ***,the blast and projectile impact resistance performance was ***,the microstructural characteristics were reviewed using the scanning electron microscope and X-ray Powder *** review outcome reveals that the mechanical properties were increased when 30%silica fume was added to a higher dose of steel fibre to improve the microstructure of *** is hypothesized that the brittleness of gUHPC was mitigated by adding 1.5%steel fibre reinforcement,which played a role in the decrease of contact explosion cratering and *** the need for cement in gUHPC was a key factor in the review,indicating a promising potential for lowering carbon ***,gUHPC research is still in its early stages,so more study is required before its full potential can be utilized.

Urban areas face significant challenges in maintaining water quality amidst increasing urbanization and changing climatic patterns. This study investigates the complex interplay between meteorological variables and water quality parameters in Nairobi City, focusing on the impacts of rainfall and temperature on surface water quality. Data from multiple sources, including the Water Resources Authority, Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, and the World Bank’s Climate Change Knowledge Portal, were analyzed to assess the relationships between meteorological variables (rainfall and temperature) and water quality parameters (such as electroconductivity, biochemical oxygen demand, chloride, and pH). The analysis reveals varying impacts of rainfall and temperature on different water quality parameters. While parameters like iron and pH show strong relationships with both rainfall and temperature, others such as ammonia and nitrate exhibit moderate relationships. Additionally, the study highlights the influence of runoff, urbanization, and industrial activities on water quality, emphasizing the need for holistic management approaches. Recommendations encompass the establishment of annual publications on Nairobi River water quality, online accessibility of water quality data, development of hydrological models, spatial analysis, and fostering cross-disciplinary research collaborations. Implementing these recommendations can enhance water quality management practices, mitigate risks, and safeguard environmental integrity in Nairobi City.

Carnitine Palmitoyl Transferase II (CPTII) is a very important enzyme that helps with the oxidation of long-chain fatty acid to produce energy. Deficiency in CPTII will lead to energy deficiency in the case of fasting and the accumulation of the long chain fatty in the body. There are three types of CPT II deficiency, the myopathic form, the severe infantile hepatocardiomuscular form and the lethal neonatal form. They are all inherited as an autosomal recessive. Diagnosis of the CPTII are 1) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) in adult form and 2) CPTII polymorphism (F352C), which is linked to reducing the activity of CPTII in infantile form [1]. glucose is the primary management and medium-chain fatty acid is an alternative due to the bypass of the CPTII enzyme in the pathway. For the prevention of CPTII deficiency are to avoid long chain fatty acid (C12-fatty acid), fasting, prolonged exercise, known triggers, and certain medications such as anti-epileptics and general anesthesia. During the rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria attack, it is very important to maintain hydration to avoid acute renal failure. If, however, renal failure occurs, dialysis is recommended. We present a case of a 27-year-old African American woman with the significant past medical history of CPT II deficiency leading to recurrent rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria. Together with all the research studies from diagnosis to treatment of CPTII deficiency will help in clinical management of patients. And this case report will add to the existing case reports of patients who have CPTII deficiency in terms of how we diagnose, how we treat, and how we prevent symptoms from re-occurring.

Aquamarine gemstones are popular jewelry in the gemstone trade and are currently one of the important products in the world market because of their economic value. Aquamarine is a Beryllium Aluminium Silicate with the chemical formula Be3Al2Si6O18 and crystallizes in the hexagonal system with space group P6/mcc (192), and Tanzania has wide deposits of aquamarine gemstones. The quality of gemstone depends on its characteristic properties, including electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. In the present study, the effect of external pressure on mechanical properties including independent elastic constants and other related parameters such as Bulk modulus, Shear modulus, Young modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and Compressibility were studied. Density Function Theory in the forcite module of the material studies software on the external pressure within the range of 0 - 200 gPa on the optimized structure at electrostatic, Van der Waals and Ewald terms were used in this study. The results reveal that the independent elastic constants are mechanically unstable at 50 - 120 gpa and are stable at 0 - 40 gPa and above 120 gPa, with the average bulk modulus, shear modulus, young modulus, Poisson’s ratio of 2319.9447, 652.3058, 1789.2236, and 0.26 respectively with the compressibility of 0.059921/TPa, this indicates that aquamarine gemstones are stable against strain and strongly against shear stress but opposing shear deformation. These values are within other crystalline materials found in the literature. This provides technological backing for the comprehensive valuation of mechanical properties, quality, and stability of gemstones available in Tanzania.

昆虫病原线虫是一种极具潜力的生防因子，因其高效的杀虫特性而受到国际生防界的广泛关注，胰岛素作为一种蛋白质多肽，已被证实对昆虫、线虫等的生长发育、寿命均有重要调控作用。为了明确胰岛素对昆虫病原线虫的影响，本试验通过对经卡森斯氏线虫Steinernemakraussei0657L和短尾异小杆线虫Heterorhabditisbrevicaudis0641TY侵染的大蜡螟galleriamellonella注射不同浓度胰岛素，观测昆虫病原线虫的生活史及其对大蜡螟的致病力，以明确胰岛素对昆虫病原线虫生长发育、生殖力、致病力的影响。结果表明：胰岛素干预时间和干预浓度均可对卡森斯氏线虫0657L在寄主昆虫体内的生长发育产生影响，侵染当天（t）干预和高浓度（1:500）干预，会明显缩短其发育历期；侵染当天无论是高浓度还是低浓度的胰岛素干预，均会明显缩短短尾异小杆线虫0641TY的发育历期，且相比较卡森斯氏线虫0657L，胰岛素促进短尾异小杆线虫0641TY发育历期的效果更明显。在卡森斯氏线虫0657L侵染大蜡螟10 d后，注射低浓度的胰岛素，可显著提高其生殖力；在短尾异小杆线虫0641TY侵染大蜡螟1d后，注射低浓度的胰岛素，可显著提高其生殖力。胰岛素对卡森斯氏线虫0657L致病力有影响，在24 h内高浓度胰岛素可显著缩短寄主昆虫的死亡时间，但是侵染36 h后，各处理间差异不显著；而对短尾异小杆线虫0641TY致病力无影响。综上所述，胰岛素对卡森斯氏线虫0657L和短尾异小杆线虫0641TY的发育和生殖力均有影响，且对卡森斯氏线虫致病力有影响。
