Fluorescence-based techniques are the cornerstone of modern biomedical optics,with applications ranging from bioimaging at various scales(organelle to organism)to detection and quantification of a wide variety of biological species of ***,the weakness of the fluorescence signal remains a persistent challenge in meeting the ever-increasing demand to image,detect,and quantify biological species with low ***,we report a simple and universal method based on a flexible and conformal elastomeric film with adsorbed plasmonic nanostructures,which we term a“plasmonic patch,”that provides large(up to 100-fold)and uniform fluorescence enhancement on a variety of surfaces through simple transfer of the plasmonic patch to the *** demonstrate the applications of the plasmonic patch in improving the sensitivity and limit of detection(by more than 100 times)of fluorescence-based immunoassays implemented in microtiter plates and in microarray *** novel fluorescence enhancement approach presented here represents a disease,biomarker,and application agnostic ubiquitously applicable fundamental and enabling technology to immediately improve the sensitivity of existing analytical methodologies in an easy-to-handle and cost-effective manner,without changing the original procedures of the existing techniques.

Performance Assessment of Darrieus Turbine with Modified Trailing Edge Airfoil for Low Wind Speeds

Darrieus wind turbines are simple lift based machines with exceptionally high efficiencies in terms of power coefficient compared to similar drag based vertical axis turbines. However, in low Reynolds numbers, a notable performance loss was reported. As a potential solution, truncated NACA 0018 airfoil (NACA 0018TC-39) has been introduced with baseline cavity modification to achieve better start-up characteristics and to enhance the low wind speed performance. The baseline cavity will provide an additional benefit of reverse drag at low TSR which is obligatory for low wind speed start-up. Numerical optimization has been carried out on the conceived airfoil NACA 0018TC-39 to find out the effective truncation percentage in terms of the chord. The numerical study has been extended to compare NACA 0018 and NACA 0018TC-39 airfoil for their aerodynamic performances in terms of lift, drag coefficients and separation characteristics. The NACA 0018TC-39 airfoil was incorporated within a non-swept straight bladed Darrieus turbine miniature to experimentally evaluate the performance in terms of dynamic power coefficient, dynamic torque coefficient and static torque coefficient and compared with conventional NACA 0018 airfoil at six different Reynolds numbers 178917, 193827, 208737, 223646, 238556 and 268376. The experimental contrast implied that NACA 0018TC-39 airfoil turbine yielded almost double power coefficients at low Reynolds number compared to conventional NACA 0018 airfoil without hampering its performance at higher Reynolds number.

On the Mathematical Modelling of Adaptive Darrieus Wind Turbine

Darrieus wind turbines are experiencing a renewed interest for their application in decentralized power generation and urban installation. Much attention and research efforts have been dedicated in the past to develop as an efficient standalone Darrieus turbine. Despite these efforts, these vertical axis turbines are still low in efficiency compared to the horizontal axis counterparts. The current architecture of the turbine and their inherent characteristics limit their application in low wind speed areas as confirmed experimentally and computationally by past research. To enable and extend their operation for weak wind flows, a novel design of Adaptive Darrieus Wind Turbine (ADWT) is proposed. The hybrid Darrieus Savonius rotor with dynamically varying Savonius rotor diameter based on the wind speed enables the turbine to start, efficiently operate and stop the turbine at high winds. As the wake of Savonius rotor has a profound impact on the power performance of the combined rotor, the wake of two buckets Savonius rotor in open and closed configuration is reviewed. The current study aims to develop an analytical model to predict the power coefficient and the influence of other design parameters on the proposed design. The formulated analytical model is coded in python, and the results are obtained for the 10 kW rotor. Parametric analysis on the chord length and the diameter of the closed Savonius rotor is performed in search of an optimized diameter to maximize the annual energy output. Blade torque and the rotor torque are evaluated with respect to azimuthal angle and compared with conventional Darrieus rotor. The computed results show that peak power coefficient of ADWT is 13% lower than the conventional Darrieus rotor at the rated wind speed of 10 m/s.

The performance and annual energy output have to be predicted to maximize the economic benefits from a wind turbine. Mathematically predicting the performance of Darrieus type lift based turbines are challenging due to the inconsistent angle of attack, blade wake interaction and local induced velocities giving rise to complex flow physics. A reliable and validated mathematical model is therefore essential to optimize the various design parameters prior to manufacture. The objective of the current study is to evaluate widely employed aerodynamic models based on their prediction accuracy, limitations, and computational requirements. Double multiple stream tube models have been discussed in detail and the predictions are experimentally validated through the wind tunnel test of three-bladed H-Darrieus rotor in terms of torque and power coefficient. The possible sources for the deviation between the predicted and measured values have been discussed and concluded with potential solutions.

Adaptation of <i>Arabidopsis</i>Plants to Tropical Aeroponics Using Cool Root Zone Temperatures

Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heyhn. is a well known model plant in plant research. However, its growth conditions and diminutive stature associated with low biomass at maturity make it a challenging species for physiological studies. While in the tropical countries, it can only be grown either by tissue cultures or in growth chambers under controlled conditions. An aeroponic technique with 20°C ± 2°C and 30°C ± 2°C root-zone temperatures (RZT) was used to grow Arabidopsis (Columbia ecotype) in a tropical greenhouse with natural irradiance and high ambient temperature (38°C/28°C day/night). Seedlings germinated in growth chambers at 20°C or 30°C. At 6 to 8 leaf stage, they were transferred to the aeroponic troughs with their roots exposed to constant temperature of 20°C ± 2°C and 30°C ± 2°C while their aerial parts were subjected to fluctuating ambient temperature from 28°C to 38°C. After a week, plants have acclimatised to both RZTs and started developing normal rosettes, bolted and yielded viable seeds. However, 20°C ± 2°C RZT allowed them to recover from turgor pressure despite of wilting, and significantly increased biomass. Mature plants grown in each RZTs were compared morphologically and physiologically to the plants grown in growth chamber (GC) at 20°C (root and shoot) temperature with 60% relative humidity. Aeroponically grown plants did not experience photoinhibition, and also exhibited higher photosynthetic light usage efficiency and higher capacities of heat dissipation, compared to GC plants. This aeroponics with cool RZTs can allow the use of Arabidopsis as a model plant even under tropical climate.

本文描述一种能使根据不同时期的地震资料得到的时间等值线一致的方法。与常规采用的闭合测网调节方法不同,本文是从面积的观点来看待这个问题的。该算法包括对出现闭合差的两组独立数据点分别勾绘等值线和通过反向内插法估计平面图中的差别。为了获得每一个控制点的校正值,利用逐渐高阶的趋势面来拟合这种差别。在加入校正值之后绘制出的最终等值线图保留两个数据集的每一个所描述的构造特征,同时解决了大部分闭合差的影响。借助个人计算机或工作站的等值线绘图包,这种方法适合于日常应用。为了阐明这种方法,本文解释和处理了一个沉积盆地的地震资料。

Associations of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in the Bovine <i>FADS</i>6 Gene with Fatty Acid Composition in Hanwoo (Korean Cattle)

The bovine fatty acid desaturase (FADS) gene cluster consists of FADS1, FADS2, FADS3, and FADS6, which acts as key enzymes in fatty acid metabolism. Of these, the genetics effects of variants in FADS1, FADS2 and FADS3 have been previously studied. However, the genetic effects of variants of FADS6 gene have not been studied. The aim of this study was to identify genetic variants in the bovine fatty acid desaturase 6 (FADS6) gene and study their association with fatty acid composition in Hanwoo cattle. Six genetic variants were observed, three each in intron 2 and exon 6 by DNA sequencing analyses. The association of genetic variants with fatty acid composition was evaluated in 90 Hanwoo steers. The variants were confirmed and the animals were genotyped by RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) and AS-PCR (Allele Specific PCR) analyses. The analysis revealed that palmitoleic acid (C16:1n7) was associated with g.3391G > A, g.3660A > C and g.15657C > T, and stearic acid (C18:0) showed highly significant association with g.3660A > C segments. Both g.3391G > A, g.3660A > C also had strong additive and dominance effect for Palmitoleic acid, while g.3660A > C also had a strong dominance effect for stearic acid. These results could be useful for modulating fatty acid composition in beef and produce meat with higher monounsaturated fatty acid to saturated fatty acid ratio (MUFA/SFA), which had been shown to have positive health effect in humans.

Clinical Study on Deviated Nasal Septum and Its Associated Pathology

Deviated nasal septum is a frequently occurring condition that can cause nasal obstruction in an individual. It may result in permanent changes in the nasal and sinus mucosa because of altered ventilation of the nasal cavity. The present study makes an attempt to review its incidence and its associated pathology. Our study involves two groups of patients with 100 patients in each group. The first group consists of patients who are having nasal obstruction as a chief complaint and have deviated nasal septum. The second group consists of patients with either ear or throat complaints without any nasal symptoms, but were noted to have deviation of nasal septum on examination. An analysis was made to determine whether any particular type of deviation is more prone to develop pathology than other types. Our study shows that an “S” shaped deviation is more prone to be associated with ear, nose and throat pathology.
