Chip Flood (vs) Core Flood——Assessment of Flowback and Oil Productivity in Oil-Wet Hydraulic Fractured Rocks

New developments in lab technologies help us to explore problems that were less understood in the past due to the limitations and technological constraints. One such problem of assessing the formation damage created by the invasion of fracture fluid into the matrix at lab scale is the visualization of fluid saturation distributions inside the matrix. According to the current understanding, the high capillarity contrast between the fracture and the matrix creates a non-uniform saturation distribution of invaded fluid phase during flowback, with the saturations mostly concentrated at the fracture face. With the advent of microfluidics, their application has become more feasible to visually analyze the effectiveness of surfactants to mitigate the invasion-created formation damage and understand the impact of depth of invasion on the characteristics of flowback and oil productivity. Through our previous work, we have successfully demonstrated the capability of this new visualization tool in studying the factors of the presence of surfactant in the fracture fluid and its depth of invasion, to understand the flowback efficiencies and later oil productivities in oil-wet fractured formations. Since the substrate for flooding was a proxy model of an actual rock, the chip flooding results need to be validated with conventional core flooding experiments. In contemporary times, when the new advancements in technology are driving the research progress in all industries, it is mandatory to take a well informed decision by imposing a comparative check on the results with accessible conventional means, wherever possible. The success of validation of chip flooding approach with the core flooding approach in this work instates a strong belief over the application of microfluidics to pursue more research in related fields of oil recovery.

Self-assembled V2O5 interconnected microspheres produced in a fish-water electrolyte medium as a high- performance lithium-ion-battery cathode

Interconnected microspheres of V2Os composed of ultra-long nanobelts are synthesized in an environmental friendly way by adopting a conventional anodization process combined with annealing. The synthesis process is simple and low-cost because it does not require any additional chemicals or reagents. Commercial fish-water is used as an electrolyte medium to anodize vanadium foil for the first time. Electron microscopy investigation reveals that each belt consists of numerous nanofibers with free space between them. Therefore, this novel nanostructure demonstrates many outstanding features during electrochemical operation. This structure prevents self-aggregation of active materials and fully utilizes the advantage of active materials by maintaining a large effective contact area between active materials, conductive additives, and electrolyte, which is a key challenge for most nanomaterials. The electrodes exhibit promising electrochemical performance with a stable discharge capacity of 227 mAh·g^-1 at 1C after 200 cycles. The rate capability of the electrode is outstanding, and the obtained capacity is as high as 278 at 0.5C, 259 at 1C, 240 at 2C, 206 at 5C, and 166 mAh·g^-1 at 10C. Overall this novel structure could be one of the most favorable nanostructures of vanadium oxide-based cathodes for Li-ion batteries.

Fetal cardiac mesenchymal stem cells express embryonal markers and exhibit differentiation into cells of all three germ layers

AIM:To study the expression of embryonal markers by fetal cardiac mesenchymal stem cells(fC-MSC)and their differentiation into cells of all the germ layers. METHODS:Ten independent cultures of rat fCMSC were set up from cells derived from individual or pooled fetal hearts and studies given below were carried out at passages 3,6,15 and *** phenotypic markers CD29,CD31,CD34,CD45,CD73,CD90, CD105,CD166 and HLA-DR were analyzed by flow *** expression of embryonal markers Oct-4, Nanog,Sox-2,SSEA-1,SSEA-3,SSEA-4,TRA-1-60 and TRA 1-81 were studied by *** fC-MSC treated with specific induction medium were evaluated for their differentiation into(1)adipocytes and osteocytes(mesodermal cells)by Oil Red O and Alizarin Red staining,respectively,as well as by expression of lipoprotein lipase,PPARγ2 genes in adipocytes and osteopontin and RUNX2 genes in osteocytes by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT- PCR);(2)neuronal(ectodermal)cells by expression of neuronal Filament-160 and Glial Fibrillar Acidic Protein by RT-PCR and immunocytochemistry;and(3)hepa- tocytic(endodermal)cells by expression of albumin by RT-PCR and immunocytochemistry,glycogen deposits by Periodic Acid Schiff staining and excretion of urea into the culture supernatant. RESULTS:The fC-MSC expressed CD29,CD73,CD90, CD105,CD166 but lacked expression of CD31,CD34, CD45 and *** expressed embryonal markers,***-4,Nanog,Sox-2,SSEA-1,SSEA-3,SSEA-4, TRA-1-81 but not *** treatment with specific induction media,they differentiated into adipocytes and osteocytes,neuronal cells and hepatocytic cells. CONCLUSION:Our results together suggest that fCMSC are primitive stem cell types with a high degree of plasticity and,in addition to their suitability for cardiovascular regenerative therapy,they may have a wide spectrum of therapeutic applications in regenerative medicine.

Ambulatory pulmonary artery pressure monitoring in advanced heart failure patients

Heart failure (HF) is an emerging epidemic associate with significant morbidity, mortality, and health care expenditure. Although there were major advances in pharmacologic and device based therapies for the management of HF, mortality of this condition remains high. Accurate monitoring of HF patients for exacerbations is very important to reduce recurrent hospitalizations and its associated complications. With the failure of clinical signs, tele-monitoring, and laboratory bio-markers to function as early markers of HF exacerbations, more sophisticated techniques were sought to accurately predict the circulatory status in HF patients in order to execute timely pharmacological intervention to reduce frequent hospitalizations. CardioMEMSTM (St. Jude Medical, Inc., Saint Paul, Minnesota) is an implantable, wireless pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) monitoring system which transmits the patient’s continuous PAPs to the treating health care provider in the ambulatory setting. PAP-guided medical therapy modification has been shown to significantly reduce HF-related hospitalization and overall mortality. In advanced stages of HF, wireless access to hemodynamic information correlated with earlier left ventricular assist device implantation and shorter time to heart transplantation.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Remediation Using Graphene (G)-Titanium Oxide (TiO₂) Nanocomposite Material in Visible Light Radiation

The petroleum compounds were photocatalytically remediated from water using graphene (G)- titanium oxide (TiO2) nanocomposite material in visible light radiation. The G-TiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized using sol-gel technique, and its structural & morphological properties were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), particle analyzer and UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) measurement techniques. Various petroleum-based chemicals (toluene, naphthalene and diesel) were remediated, and samples were analyzed using optical and gas chromatography (GC) techniques. The mechanism of photocatalytic remediation of petroleum compounds using G-TiO2 nanomaterials is understood and well compared with data available in literature.

Deep learning based detection of monkeypox virus using skin lesion images

As we set into the second half of 2022,the world is still recovering from the two-year COVID-19 ***,over the past three months,the outbreak of the Monkeypox Virus(MPV)has led to fifty-two thousand confirmed cases and over one hundred *** caused the World Health Organisation to declare the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern(PHEIC).If this outbreak worsens,we could be looking at the Monkeypox virus causing the next global *** Monkeypox affects the human skin,the symptoms can be captured with regular *** samples of these images can be used as a training dataset for machine learning-based detection *** a regular camera to capture the skin image of the infected person and running it against computer vision models is *** this research,we use deep learning to diagnose monkeypox from skin lesion *** a publicly available dataset,we tested the dataset on five pre-trained deep neural networks:GoogLeNet,Places365-GoogLeNet,SqueezeNet,AlexNet and *** was done to choose the best *** metrics such as accuracy,precision,recall,f1-score and AUC were *** the above models,ResNet18 was able to obtain the highest accuracy of 99.49%.The modified models obtained validation accuracies above 95%.The results prove that deep learning models such as the proposed model based on ResNet-18 can be deployed and can be crucial in battling the monkeypox *** the used networks are optimized for efficiency,they can be used on performance limited devices such as smartphones with *** addition of explainable artificial intelligence techniques LIME and GradCAM enables visual interpretation of the prediction made,helping health professionals using the model.

Micro-scale Dispersion of Air Pollutants over an Urban Setup in a Coastal Region

The dispersion is mainly governed by wind field and depends on the planetary boundary layer (PBL) dynamics. Accurate representation of the meteorological weather fields would improve the dispersion assessments. In urban areas representation of wind around the obstacles is not possible for the pollution dispersion studies using Gaussian based modeling studies. It is widely accepted that computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools would provide reasonably good solution to produce the wind fields around the complex structures and other land scale elements. By keeping in view of the requirement for the micro-scale dispersion, a commercial CFD model PANACHE with PANEPR developed by Fluidyn is implemented to study the micro-scale dispersion of air pollution over an urban setup at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam a coastal station in the east coast of India under stable atmospheric conditions. Meso-scale module of the PANACHE model is integrated with the data generated at the site by IGCAR under RRE (Round Robin Exercise) program to develop the flow fields. Using this flow fields, CFD model is integrated to study the micro-scale dispersion. Various pollution dispersion scenarios are developed using hypothetical emission inventory during stably stratified conditions to understand the micro-scale dispersion over different locations of coastal urban set up in the IGCAR region of Kalpakkam.
