Bacterial Diversity in Alpine Lakes: A Review from the Third Pole Region

Microorganisms are unique among all of the living organisms because of their high population size, advanced genetic diversity, short generation time, and quick response to the small change in environmental conditions. Remote alpine lakes of the Third Pole region provide the unique habitat for microorganisms acting as a natural laboratory and offering the information about the ecological roles of microorganisms. Many researchers focused on microbial communities as well as the impact of physicochemical, biological and hydrological parameters in lakes of this region since decades but the comprehensive review focusing on bacterial diversity and the role of environmental parameters still lacks. Here we reviewed bacterial diversity in lakes of the Third Pole region by analyzing 16 S rRNA clone libraries accessed from previous research findings. A total of 5 388 bacterial 16 S rRNA gene sequences were analyzed and classified into different phylogenetic groups. The average relative abundance of dominant taxa includes Betaproteobacteria(19%), Bacteroidetes(18%), Gammaproteobacteria(16%), Actinobacteria(15%), Alphaproteobacteria(14%), Cyanobacteria(7%), and Firmicutes(5%). Several adaptational strategies were adopted by these dominant bacterial groups in order to accommodate in the respective habitat. Nevertheless, lake water properties like temperature, pH, salinity, incident UV radiation, turbidity, and nutrients also played role in bacterial diversity.

Lentil is a highly nutritious legume with an ample quantity of carbohydrates and good amount of proteins, minerals, vitamins, phytochemicals and fibres. Although it has been used as staple food since ancient times, its usage has been limited in developed countries, especially due to the lower protein digestibility, presence of anti-nutritional factors, flatulence and poor cooking qualities. Processing of lentils including dehulling and splitting and isolation of major fractions, e.g., proteins and starches are some of the strategies that can be adopted to add value and increase consumption of these legumes. This review paper intends to provide detailed overview of lentil＇s global production, nutritional composition and processing methods of lentil. Methods of isolation/characterization of lentil protein and starch and their subsequent application in foods are also presented.

More than 1 300 species of the vast genus Acacia are found in tropical habitats. They are crucial economic plants since they produce traditional medicines, timber, and gum. The pharmacological uses of the Acacia genus include anti-diarrheal, anti-malarial, chronic pain relief, wound healing, anti-cancer, anti-rheumatism, and antidiabetes activities. It is also used for treating various illnesses such as gastroenteritis, allergies, Alzheimer’s disease, cough, and cardiovascular disease. The present review aims to summarize the antimicrobial activities including the antibacterial and antifungal activity of the Acacia genus. The literature was searched in books and online databases including SciFinder, Google Scholar, Scopus, Pub Med, and scientific journals using the most relevant keywords: Acacia+antimicrobial, Acacia+antibacterial, and Acacia+antifungal.

Hypothesis:Variation in species assemblages due to micro-topographic features and flow regime determine vegetation carbon stock in floodplain *** and method:We tested this hypothesis in Chatla—a tropical floodplain wetland located in northeast *** sampling stations characterized by contrasting micro-topographic and flow parameters were selected in the wetland for *** composition,assemblage pattern,and vegetation carbon stock were studied in these stations during three flood phases,i.e.,early,middle,and late flood phases following standard *** and multivariate statistics were used to determine the relationship between the selected environmental parameters,plant species assemblages,and vegetation carbon stock of the ***:Thirty-one species of herbs and five species of shrubs were recorded from the five stations in Chatla floodplain *** regime characterized by water flow velocity and discharge showed substantial variations across the *** parameters in turn are related to variations in the micro-topographic characteristics namely depth,width,and cross-sectional area of the *** species composition and abundance differed significantly with respect to micro-topography and flow regime as revealed by the cluster *** canonical correspondence analysis revealed strong association of plant species assemblages with the micro-topography and flow regime within the *** regression analysis revealed a significant positive relationship of the vegetation carbon stock with the water ***:Spatial variation in plant species diversity because of micro-topography and flow regime determines the vegetation carbon stock in floodplain *** of these parameters by anthropogenic activities such as mining and quarrying may potentially influence the carbon stocking potential of seasonal floodplain ***,appropriate measures should be taken to main

In the central Nepal Himalaya,landslides form the major natural hazards annually resulting in many casualties and *** as well as non-structural measures are in place to minimize the risk of landslide *** reduce the landslide risk,a Landslide Early Warning System(LEWS)as a nonstructural measure has been piloted at Sundrawati village(Kalinchowk rural municipality,Dolakha district)to identify its *** discussions with stakeholders,aided by landslide susceptibility map,resulted in a better understanding of surface dynamics and the relationship between rainfall and surface *** led to the development of a LEWS comprised of extensometers,soil moisture sensors,rain gauge stations,and solar panels as an energy source that blows siren receiving signals via a micro-controller and interfacing *** data generated through the system is transmitted via a Global System for Mobile Communications(GSM)network to responsible organizations in realtime to circulate the warning to local *** LEWS is user-friendly and can be easily operated by a *** successful pilot early warning system has saved 495 people from 117 households in August ***,landslide monitoring and dissemination of warning information remains a complex process where technical and communications skill should work closely together.

Background:Avian influenza(AI)is a global public health *** the knowledge that butchers have about it and the precautionary practices they take against it is crucial for designing future preparedness *** study aimed to identify the social determinants of knowledge and precautionary measures of AI among butchers in the Kathmandu district in ***:The study was based on a cross-sectional study design using structured interview questionnaires and checklists to observe social determinants and the precautionary measures of 120 butchers aged 15 years and above from the Kathmandu ***:The majority of the respondents were male(69.2%)and more than half(53.3%)were from the age group of 25-39 years(mean:31.08,SD:±9.82).Nearly two-thirds(61.3%)of the respondents had a‘poor knowledge’,and the remaining had‘some knowledge’,about *** than half(55.4%)of the respondents were in the category of displaying‘poor practice’towards AI and the remaining half were in the‘satisfactory practice’*** of the respondents had‘adequate knowledge’or displayed‘good practice’.The respondents in the>25 years of age group were less likely[OR 0.169;95%CI(0.056-0.512)]compared to those in the<25 years age group to have a poor knowledge about AI;and the respondents with‘primary education’were more likely[OR 3.265;95%CI(1.326-8.189)]to have a poor knowledge about AI as compared to those who had a secondary or above level of *** who did not know the correct definition of AI were more likely to follow poor practices[OR 4.265;95%CI(1.193-15.242)];and the respondents who did not know the risk groups associated with AI were also more likely to follow poor practices[OR 3.103;95%CI(1.191-8.083)].Conclusion:This study points out the need to address butchers to improve their knowledge of,and more importantly their compliance with,the precautionary measures to prevent avian influenza.

In this manuscript, we report the synthesis of newly designed imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines carrying active pharmacophores as potential anticonvulsant agents. Newly synthesized target compounds were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and mass spectroscopy followed by elemental analysis studies. Preliminary anticonvulsant screening study of target compounds was carried out following MES and scPTZ methods. Compounds 6e and 6f, possessing electron rich aryl substituent at position-2 and tolyl substituted oxazolone moiety at the position-3 of imidazoll,2-a]pyridine ring, exhibited activity comparable to standard drug diazepam and emerged as lead compounds. New compounds displayed enhanced activity in scPTZ method, indicating their ability to raise the seizure threshold. Their neurotoxicity study by Rotarod test showed that they are nontoxic at all tested doses.
