An axenic strain reveals the responses of Phaeodactylum tricornutum to external organic carbon

The model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum is considered a promising source of various high value bioproducts, and developing cultivation processes is crucial for its *** mixotrophy and heterotrophy have been recommended as effective strategies for microalgal cultivation, previous studies on P. tricornutum have yielded conflicting results in terms of cultivating this microalga. To verify the capacity of this microalga utilizing external organic carbon, both heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultivation with varied carbon sources were performed using an axenic strain. The results demonstrate that glycerol was the only organic carbon that substantially stimulated the growth of P. tricornutum in the presence of light. Sodium acetate(naAc) at low concentrations could also promote growth, while at high concentrations led to severe inhibition under mixotrophic conditions. The addition of glucose imposed no appreciable impact on either cell density or biomass concentration, confirming that P. tricornutum cannot metabolize external glucose. Subsequently, a comparative analysis between mixotrophy and autotrophy was performed to reveal the influences of glycerol on the cellular metabolism based on growth performances, biochemical compositions, and chlorophyll fluorescence *** also indicate that the addition of glycerol did not have detrimental effects on the capacity of either pigments biosynthesis or photosynthesis, but enhanced the saturated fatty acids and reduced the unsaturated fatty acids.

The production of thermostable laccases from a native strain of the white-rot fungus Pycnoporus sanguineus isolated in Mexico was enhanced by testing different media and a combination of inducers including copper sulfate（CuSO4）.The best conditions obtained from screening experiments in shaken flasks using tomato juice,CuSO4,and soybean oil were integrated in an experimental *** levels of tomato juice as the medium,CuSO4and soybean oil as inducers（36.8%（v/v）,3 mmol/L,and 1%（v/v）,respectively） were determined for 10 L stirred tank bioreactor *** combination resulted in laccase titer of 143000 IU/L（2,2＇-azino-bis（3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6- sulfonic acid）,pH 3.0）,which represents the highest activity so far reported for *** in a 10-L *** interesting media resulting from the screening included glucose-bactopeptone which increased laccase activity up to 20000 IU/L,whereas the inducers Acid Blue 62 and Reactive Blue 19 enhanced enzyme production in this medium 10 *** on a partial characterization,the laccases of this strain are especially promising in terms of thermostability（half-life of 6.1 h at 60 °C） and activity titers.

Prostate cancer is one of the most often diagnosed malignancies in males and its prevalence is rising in both developed and developing *** deprivation therapy has been used as a standard treatment approach for advanced prostate cancer for more than 80 *** primary aim of androgen deprivation therapy is to decrease circulatory androgen and block androgen *** a partly remediation is accomplished at the beginning of treatment,some cell populations become refractory to androgen deprivation therapy and continue to *** evidences suggest that androgen deprivation therapy may cause cadherin switching,from E-cadherin to n-cadherin,which is the hallmark of epithelial-mesenchymal *** direct and indirect mechanisms are involved in this switching and consequently,the cadherin pool changes from E-cadherin to n-cadherin in the epithelial *** E-cadherin represses invasive and migrative behaviors of the tumor cells,the loss of E-cadherin disrupts epithelial tissue structure leading to the release of tumor cells into surrounding tissues and *** this study,we review the androgen deprivation therapy-dependent cadherin switching in advanced prostate cancer with emphasis on its molecular basis especially the transcriptional factors regulated through TFG-βpathway.

Melena:A rare complication of duodenal metastases from primary carcinoma of the lung

Small bowel metastases from primary carcinoma of the lung are very uncommon and occur usually in patients with terminal stage disease. These metastases are usually asymptomatic, but may present as perforation, obstruction, malabsorption, or hemorrhage. Hemorrhage as a first presentation of small bowel metastases is extremely rare and is related to very poor patient survival. We describe a case of a 61- year old patient with primary adenocarcinoma of the lung, presenting with melena as the first manifestation of small bowel metastasis. Both primary tumor and metastatic lesions were diagnosed almost simultaneously. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy performed with a colonoscope revealed active bleeding from a metastatic tumor involving the duodenum and the proximal jejunum. Histological examination and immunohistochemical staining of the biopsy specimen strongly supported the diagnosis of metastatic lung adenocarcinoma, suggesting that small bowel metastases from primary carcinoma of the lung occur usually in patients with terminal disease and rarely produce symptoms. Gastrointestinal bleeding from metastatic small intestinal lesions should be included in the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal blood loss in a patient with a known bronchogenic tumor.

Two cameras detect more lesions in the small-bowel than one
