Propionibacterium species are mostly environmental bacteria, some being commensal of mammals including humans, and sometimes pathogenic. These bacteria are poorly identified using routine laboratory methods. Recently, Matrix Assisted laser Desorption Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) has emerged as a rapid and efficient method to identify bacterial species. We evaluated the use of MALDI-TOF-MS for identification of all validated Propionibacterium species. Only four of the 15 tested reference strains (26.7%) were correctly identified at the species level, and P. acnes, the most common human pathogenic species was not identified. When applying MALDI-TOF-MS to 48 P. acnes strains, only 18.7% were correctly identified, suggesting an intraspecific variability of proteic profiles among Propionibacterium strains. However, by enriching the Bruker database with spectra from five of these strains and re-testing the other 43 strains against this new database, 93.0% were correctly identified. Our study demonstrates that MALDI-TOF-MS may be used for the identification of Propionibacterium isolates but requires a database enrichment in spectra from additional isolates.

FDG-PET AS A ROUTINE SURVEILlaNCE TOOL IN HEAD AND NECK CARCINOMA SIX MONTHS AFTER TREATMENT

Objective To evaluate prospectively the impact of fluorodeoxyglucose-fluorine-18 positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in the detection of recurrence, second primary cancers, and distant metastases in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) 6 months after treatment. Methods A total of 41 patients without any clinical element for recurrence, second primary cancer, or distant metastases received a whole-body FDG-PET as a routine surveillance tool 6 months after initial combined curative therapy for HNSCC. Results There were 35 negative PET results and 6 positive. One patient with abnormal FDG-PET did not have recurrent HNSCC (false positive). Five had true positive results: proven recurrence in 2 patients, second primary cancer in 2, and distant metastasis in 1. The sensitivity and specificity of FDG-PET for the diagnosis of HNSCC recurrence, second tumor, and distant metastases were 100% (5/5) and 97.2% (35/36), respectively. The positive predictive value was 83.3% (5/6). The negative predictive value was 100% (35/35). The overall accuracy was 97.6% (40/41). FDG-PET had a therapeutic impact in 5 of 41 patients (12.2%). There was no impact of FDG-PET on management in other 36 patients. Conclusion FDG-PET is useful as primary method for detecting nodal recurrence and distant metastases in HNSCC as well as second cancer in subclinical patients as it had a high effectiveness. But systematic FDG-PET performed at 6 months in patients without any clinical suspicion of local recurrence was scarcely useful.

Stoichiometric mixtures of FeO and Y2O3 were milled and heat treated to obtain yttrium iron garnet, Y3Fe5O12. Two types of heating systems were used: one, a spark plasma sintering machine and the second, an electrical oven. The magnetic properties of the resulting specimens have been analyzed and discussed as a function of the grain size and the particles’ morphology. The partial formation of garnet and orthoferrite phases was revealed on the obtained powder through microstructural analyses after 9 h of ball milling. The milled powders were transformed into the orthoferrite phase after the SPS-treatment at 700°C and 900°C. Magnetic-saturation studies revealed magnetic responses up to 12.7 emu/g for specimens SPS-treated at 700°C, whereas 2.1 emu/g for samples SPS-treated at 900°C. Conventionally treated specimens at 700°C developed 0.36 emu/g of magnetization, while 0.93 emu/g was registered for those treated at 900°C.

A Double-Blind, Placebo Controlled Clinical Trial Evaluating the Efficacy and Safety of a New Skin Whitening Combination in Patients with Chloasma

Melasma (or chloasma) is a hyperpigmentation disorder predominantly affecting sun-exposed skin in women, and is often refractory to treatment. The objective was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new whitening formula for the treatment of chloasma. This?single centre, double-blind, placebo controlled, bilateral (split-face) comparison, was conducted on 44 Chinese subjects with chloasma during the winter season. The test formula was applied twice a day, for 12 weeks on left side of the face and a placebo formula on the right side of the face. Assessments included the use of the hemi-MASI (split-face Melasma Area Severity Index), both ultraviolet and standard photography, together with clinical evaluations of efficacy and safety at T0, T6 and T12 weeks. A significant difference between the 2-hemi-MASI was noticed after 6 and 12 weeks of treatment. This result was confirmed by the clinical evaluation of the dermatologists who recorded a significant improvement in the half-face treated with the new whitening formula compared with that treated with placebo (p = 0.003). The tolerance of the new formula was recorded as excellent by 82% of subjects and found to be cosmetically appealing. In this study, the new whitening formula containing ferulic acid, Ginkgo Biloba, lipohydroxyacid (LHA), niacinamide and thermal spring water was safe and significantly improved chloasma after a 3-month-treatment period compared with placebo.

Gambling and Impulsivity: An Exploratory Study in a French Adolescent Population

Pathological gambling can be a serious problem, more so to a vulnerable population such as adolescents and youth. This study aims to investigate the links between gambling behaviours and impulsivity through a multidimensional approach in a French adolescent population. A secondary aim of this study is to find out the prevalence of pathological gambling behaviour amongst adolescents who are not meant to have legal access to such games. We administered the UPPS Impulsive behaviour Scale (UPPS-P) and the Canadian Pathological Gambling Index CPGI to 1800 adolescents aged between 11 to 17 years. Our results indicate that 33% of subjects have gambled at least once during the last year and that girls gamble as much as boys (17% and 16% respectively). Scratch games are the most common games played by adolescents (81.4%). We also notice that 1.6% of our population has problematic gambling behaviour. Although we found that many dimensions of impulsivity (Urgency, Positive urgency and Sensation seeking) are correlated to gambling behaviour, only sensation seeking seems to be a good predictor of pathological gambling severity. These results can be taken into account in the development of prevention programs.
