Phytochemical Study and evaluation of the Antiradical Activity of extracts of Oleaginous Seeds of Panda oleosa and Isolona hexaloba from Gabon

Our study focused on phytochemical tests and evaluation of the anti-free radical activity of seed extracts of two oleaginous plants from Gabon used in traditional medicine or as condiments: Panda oleosa and Isolona hexaloba. The extraction was carried out by maceration with solvents of increasing polarity: cyclohexane, trichloroethylene, acetone, ethanol and finally distilled water. The total yields of the extracts are about 69.50% for Panda oleosa and 34.28% for Isolona hexaloba. The phytochemical tests carried out on the extracts of the seeds of Panda and Isolona highlight in both seeds the presence of alkaloids, polyphenols, triterpenes, carotenoids, reducing compounds, flavonoids, total sugars, coumarins, anthraquinones, free quinones, free anthracene derivatives, and terpenoids. Isolona seeds also contain leucoanthocyanins, sterols, cardiac glycosides and saponins. Phytochemical tests revealed the absence of tannins and mucilage in both seeds. The free radical scavenging activity was measured by scavenging the free radical cation of 2,2’-azino-bis[3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid] (ABTS-+) with gallic acid as the reference antioxidant. The results of the free radical scavenging activity of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of both seeds showed that the aqueous extracts were more active than the ethanolic extracts. The IC50s of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Panda seeds are 40 and 60 μg·mL-1 respectively, and those of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Isolona are 37.5 and 95 μg·mL-1 respectively. Gallic acid, the reference antioxidant (IC50 = 0.37 μg·mL-1) is about 10 times more active than the aqueous extracts of both seeds, 16 times more active than the ethanolic extract of Panda and 25 times more active than the ethanolic extract of Isolena.

Bioengineered stem cells as an alternative for islet cell transplantation

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune and increasingly prevalent condition caused by immunological destruction of beta cells. Insulin remains the mainstay of therapy. endeavours in islet transplantation have clearly demonstrated that type 1 diabetes is treatable by cellular replacement. Many challenges remain with this approach. The opportunity to use bioengineered embryonic or adult pluripotential stem cells, or islets derived from porcine xenograft sources could address future demands, but are still associated with considerable challenges. This detailed review outlines current progress in clinical islet transplantation, and places this in perspective for the remarkable scientific advances now occurring in stem cell and regenerative medicine approaches in the treatment of future curative treatment of diabetes.

elaboration and Characterization of a Composite Material Based on <i>Canarium schweinfurthii</i>engl Cores with a Polyester Matrix

The aim of this work was to develop and characterize a polyester matrix composite material based on Canarium schweinfurthii engl core granule. The particle size and the mass fractions of these cores used as fillers in this composite were the two optimization parameters. The experimentation of the twelve sample areas was based on the following optimization parameters: Three particles sizes of 80 1 2 3 ·m-3, which allows us to admit that this composite belongs to the family of light materials. The maximum compressive stress at break was obtained for the formulation 40% filler of size T3. This compressive stress at maximum rupture is in the range of 199.14 MPa. From 0% to 45% of filler, the flexural Young’s modulus of the composite increases whatever the particle size. The highest value is obtained for T2 particle size, i.e. 13.11 GPa. The static friction coefficient of the composite on wood increases as the filler content varies from 0.30 to 0.42. Thus, in view of the properties obtained, this composite can be used as alternative solutions in industrial applications, for the manufacturing of shoe heel, house ceiling, floors for housing and table support.

PURPOSe: This study was designed to identify preoperative and intraoperative features of locally recurrent colorectal cancer that predict R0 resection in patients scheduled for attempted complete resection followed by intraoperative radiation therapy. MeTHODS: Review of a prospective data base identified 119 patients brought to the intraoperative radiation therapy suite for planned complete resection of locally recurrent rectal (n=101) and colon (n=18) cancer between January 1994 and November 2000. R0 resection was achieved in 61 patients. This group was compared with patients in which an R1 (n=38), R2 (n=7), or palliative procedure (n=13) was performed. Variables evaluated included: tumor location, features of the primary tumor, and preoperative findings on computed tomography , magnetic resonance imaging, and history/physical. Tumor location was establish ed by review of operative/pathologic reports and classified as axial (anastomoti c/perineal), anterior (bladder/genitourinary organs), posterior (presacral), or lateral (pelvic sidewall). ReSULTS: When recurrence was confined to the axial location only, or axial and anterior locations, R0 resection was achieved signific antly more often than when other locations were involved (P espectively). When a lateral component was present, R0 resection was achieved s ignificantly less often than when there was no lateral component (P = 0.002). For patients with available preoperative computed tomography and/or magnetic reson ance imaging results (n = 70), the finding of lateral tumor involvement was asso ciated with R0 resection significantly less often than when lateral disease was not identified (P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Pelvic recurrences confined to the axial location, or axial and anterior locations, are more likely to be completely re sectable (R0) than those involving the pelvic sidewall. efforts to enhance preop erative identification and imaging of these patients are clearly justified.

Tolerance to individual and joint effects of arsenic and Bacillus thuringiensis subsp, israelensis or Lysinibacillus sphaericus in Culex mosquitoes

Arsenic contamination of global water supplies has come to the forefront in policy decisions in recent decades. However, the effects of arsenic on lower trophic levels of insects inhabiting contaminated ecosystems are not well understood. One approach to document both acute and sublethal effects of toxicants like arsenic is to assay them in combination with microbial pathogens to evaluate shifts in survival curves of the test organisms. Larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex tarsalis were reared in water containing 0 or 1 000μg/L of arsenate or arsenite. Fourth instars were then exposed to a range of doses of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp, israelensis （Bti） or Lysinibacillus sphaericus （Ls）, with shifts in lethal concentrations determined. Arsenic accumulation in 4th instars was also quantified, and a relative growth index （RGI） calculated for the treatments and compared to controls. Larvae of both species accumulated between 4 447 ± 169 ng As/g and 6 983 4- 367 ng As/g, though RGI values indicated accumulation did not affect growth and development. In all cases, the LC50＇s and LC90＇s of Cx. quinquefasciatus exposed jointly with arsenic and Bti/Ls were higher than Cx. tarsafis. Cx. tarsafis reared in arsenite showed a significant reduction in their Bti LC90 values compared to the control, indicating a sublethal effect of Bti. When exposed jointly with Ls, arsenite was more toxic than arsenate in Cx. tarsalis. Overall, these results indicate tolerance of these Culex species to arsenic exposures, and why this may occur is discussed.
