A global-scale multidecadal variability driven by Atlantic multidecadal oscillation

Observational analysis shows that there is a predominant global-scale multidecadal variability(GMV) of sea-surface temperature(SST). Its horizontal pattern resembles that of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation(IPO) in the Pacific and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation(AMO) in the Atlantic Ocean, which could affect global precipitation and temperature over the globe. Here, we demonstrate that the GMV could be driven by the AMO through atmospheric teleconnections and atmosphere–ocean coupling *** reveal a strong negative correlation when AMO leads GMV by approximately 4–8 *** experiments using a climate model driven by observed AMO signals reveal that the tropical Atlantic warm SST anomalies of AMO initiate anomalous cooling in the equatorial central-eastern Pacific through atmospheric teleconnections. Anticyclonic anomalies in the North and South Pacific induce equatorward winds along the coasts of North and South America, contributing to further cooling. The upper-ocean dynamics plays a minor role in GMV formation but contributes to a delayed response of the IPO to the AMO forcing. The possible impact of the GMV on AMO was also tested by prescribing only Pacific SST in the model; however, the model could not reproduce the observed phase relationship between the AMO and the GMV. These results support the hypothesis that the Atlantic Ocean plays a key role in the multidecadal variability of global SST.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer death, especially in Eastern areas. With advancements in diagnosis and treatment modalities for HCC, the survival and prognosis of HCC patients are improving. However, treatment patterns are not uniform between areas despite efforts to promote a common protocol. Although many hepatologists in Asian countries may adopt the principles of the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer staging system, they are also independently making an effort to expand the indications of each treatment and to combine therapies for better outcomes. Several expanded criteria for liver transplantation in HCC have been developed in Asian countries. Living donor liver transplantation is much more commonly performed in these countries than deceased donor liver transplantation, and it may be preceded by other treatments such as the down-staging of tumors. Local ablation therapies are often combined with transarterial chemoembolization( TACE) and the outcome is comparable to that of surgical resection. The indications of TACE are expanding, and there are new types of transarterial therapies. Although data on drug-eluting beads, TACE, and radioembolization in Asian countries are still relatively sparse compared with Western countries, these methods are gradually gaining popularity because of better tolerability and the possibility of improved response rates. Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy and radiotherapy are not included in Western guidelines, but are currently being used actively in several Asian countries. For more advanced HCCs, appropriate combinations of TACE, radiotherapy, and sorafenib can be considered, and emerging data indicate improved outcomes of combination therapies compared with single therapies. To include these paradigm shifts into newer treatment guidelines, more studies may be needed, but they are certainly in progress.

Objectives:To establish long-term outcome of surgical pulmonary valve replacement(PVR)in congenital heart disease(CHD)and to identify risk factors for overall mortality,operative mortality,and repetitive ***:This is a retrospective study of 375 surgical PVR in 293 patients who underwent surgical PVR for CHD between January 2000 and May *** only included patients with index PVR with previous open-heart surgery regardless of the number of *** previous surgical history of patients who underwent PVR during the study period was also *** who underwent the Rastelli operation,and those who underwent single PVR without previous open-heart surgery were ***:The median age of the patients at the time of surgical PVR was 14.9 years(Interquartile range,IQR,11.0–22.0).The median follow-up duration was 10.5 years(IQR,5.5–14.8 years).There were 3 patients with operative mortality(1.0%)and 15 patients with overall mortality(5.1%).The survival rate was 95.1%over 20 years follow-up *** analysis demonstrated that more than 3 times of previous open-heart surgeries before surgical PVR,older age at the first operation,longer cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB)time and longer intensive care unit(ICU)stay were predictors for overall *** who underwent surgical PVR after more than 3 times of previous open-heart surgeries had significantly higher mortality than those who underwent open-heart surgeries less than 3 times(P<0.001).Age younger than 10 years,male,multiple valve problems and longer ICU stay were significant predictors for repetitive PVR by multivariate ***:Though surgical PVR has excellent long-term outcome,it should be performed with caution for those who previously underwent multiple open-heart surgeries,especially if patient received more than 3 times of open-heart surgeries.

The stability equation of interface of two-phase jet and the corresponding particle-gas disturbance velocity ratio equation are derived by means of the phase-coupled model. The stability nares of interface of two-phase jet for different particle properties and the corresponding particle-gas disturbance velocity ratio curves are given out through numerical computation. Further, several important conclusions on effect of particle property on growth and propagation of disturbance of interface of two-phase jet and particle disturbance property me presented on the basis of analyses of the obtained stability curves and particle-gas disturbance velocity ratio curves. These important conclusions can play a guiding role in studying development of two-phase jet and executing artificial controls over it in project practice.

Cochlodinium polykrikoides is a notoriously harmful algal species that inflicts severe damage on the aquacultures of the coastal seas of Korea and Japan. Information on their expected movement tracks and boundaries of influence is very useful and important for the effective establishment of a reduction plan. In general, the information is supported by a red-tide（a.k.a algal bloom） model. The performance of the model is highly dependent on the accuracy of parameters, which are the coefficients of functions approximating the biological growth and loss patterns of the C. polykrikoides. These parameters have been estimated using the bioassay data composed of growth-limiting factor and net growth rate value pairs. In the case of the C. polykrikoides, the parameters are different from each other in accordance with the used data because the bioassay data are sufficient compared to the other algal species. The parameters estimated by one specific dataset can be viewed as locally-optimized because they are adjusted only by that dataset. In cases where the other one data set is used, the estimation error might be considerable. In this study, the parameters are estimated by all available data sets without the use of only one specific data set and thus can be considered globally optimized. The cost function for the optimization is defined as the integrated mean squared estimation error, i.e., the difference between the values of the experimental and estimated rates. Based on quantitative error analysis, the root-mean squared errors of the global parameters show smaller values, approximately 25%–50%, than the values of the local parameters. In addition, bias is removed completely in the case of the globally estimated parameters. The parameter sets can be used as the reference default values of a red-tide model because they are optimal and representative. Fish scale （FS） loaded TiO2 composites were investigated as photocatalysts in degradation of Methyl Orange under solar light irradiation. Composites were prepared through sol-gel method by varying mass ratio of TiO2/FS at 90：10, 70：30 and 50：50, respectively. The catalysts prepared in this study were characterized by using XRD, SEM, FT-IR and nitrogen sorption. The effects of solar irradiation, mass ratio of TiO//FS composites, irradiation time and catalyst loadings were studied. Synergistic effect was found in TiO2/FS of 90：10 composite which performed higher photocatalytic degradation than synthesized TiO2 under solar light irradiation. However, further increasing fish scale content in the composites reduced the photocatalytic activity drastically. Under solar light irradiation, all the catalysts in this study exhibited photocatalytic activity, except TiO2/FS of 50：50 composite that only acted as a weak biosorbent without performing any photocatalytic property. Photocatalytic degradation increased with increasing catalyst loading and irradiation time but decreased with increased of initial dye concentration.

Polyimides are well known for their high chemical and thermal stability. However, a few polyimide samples have been reported which are completely soluble in such environmentally friendly and common organic solvent as propyleneglycol monomethyl ether acetate (PGMEA). In this work thermally stable, organosoluble and photocurable acidic polyimides were synthesized by simple and cost effective one-pot solution method. They polyimides obtained by this method showed much higher thermal stability (1 wt% loss temperature 345°C) than melt polymerized polyimides owing to the photocrosslinking reactions by the terminal double bonds.

Quantum chemical calculation was carried out to choose a promoter which can reduce the poisoning of V2O5/TiO2 catalysts by SO2. Several atoms were chosen as candidates and new catalysts were synthesized by impregnation method. The NOx conversion rate was measured at temperatures between 100 and 400 ℃ and poisoning effect was investigated. The most promising candidate promoter, Se, was excluded because of its high vapor pressure. On the other hand, Sb shows best promoting properties. Sb promoted catalyst reaches the maximum NOx conversion rate at 250 ℃. It also shows considerably enhanced resistance to poisoning of V2O5/TiO2 catalysts by SO2.
