A paintable and adhesive hydrogel cardiac patch with sustained release of ANGPTL4 for infarcted heart repair

The infarcted heart undergoes irreversible pathological remodeling after reperfusion involving left ventricle dilation and excessive inflammatory reactions in the infarcted heart,frequently leading to fatal functional *** attempts have been made to attenuate pathological remodeling in infarcted hearts using cardiac patches and anti-inflammatory drug *** this study,we developed a paintable and adhesive hydrogel patch using dextran-aldehyde(dex-ald)and gelatin,incorporating the anti-inflammatory protein,ANGPTL4,into the hydrogel for sustained release directly to the infarcted heart to alleviate *** optimized the material composition,including polymer concentration and molecular weight,to achieve a paintable,adhesive hydrogel using 10%gelatin and 5%dex-ald,which displayed in-situ gel formation within 135 s,cardiac tissue-like modulus(40.5 kPa),suitable tissue adhesiveness(4.3 kPa),and excellent mechanical ***4 was continuously released from the gelatin/dex-ald hydrogel without substantial burst *** gelatin/dex-ald hydrogel could be conveniently painted onto the beating heart and degraded in ***,in vivo studies using animal models of acute myocardial infarction revealed that our hydrogel cardiac patch containing ANGPTL4 significantly improved heart tissue repair,evaluated by echocardiography and histological *** heart tissues treated with ANGPTL4-loaded hydrogel patches exhibited increased vascularization,reduced inflammatory macrophages,and structural maturation of cardiac *** novel hydrogel system,which allows for facile paintability,appropriate tissue adhesiveness,and sustained release of anti-inflammatory drugs,will serve as an effective platform for the repair of various tissues,including heart,muscle,and cartilage.

Dissemination of gastric cancer may usually occur by direct spread through the perigastric tissues to adjacent organ, lymphatic spread, and hematogenous spread. We report a rare case of gastric cancer with mucosal metastastic lesion on the upper esophagus that was diagnosed by endoscopy and endosonography. A biopsy of the esophageal mass was performed and the pathologic findings with immunohistochemical stain for Mucin-5AC are proved to be identical to that of gastric adenocarcinoma, suggesting metastasis from main lesion of the gastric cancer. The lesion could not be explained by lymphatic or hematogenous spread,and its metastasis mechanism is considered to be different from previous studies. We suggest that the gastroesophageal reflux of cancer cells could be one of the possible metastatic pathways for metastasis of esophagus from an adenocarcinoma of the stomach.

Melatonin modulates adiponectin expression on murine colitis with sleep deprivation

AIM To determine adiponectin expression in colonic tissue of murine colitis and systemic cytokine expression after melatonin treatments and sleep *** The following five groups of C57BL/6 mice were used in this study:(1) group Ⅰ,control;(2) group Ⅱ,2% DSS induced colitis for 7 d;(3) group Ⅲ,2% DSS induced colitis and melatonin treatment;(4) group Ⅳ,2% DSS induced colitis with sleep deprivation(SD) using specially designed and modified multiple platform water baths; and(5) group V,2% DSS induced colitis with SD and melatonin treatment. Melatonin(10 mg/kg) or saline was intraperitoneally injected daily to mice for 4 d. The body weight was monitored daily. The degree of colitis was evaluated histologically after sacrificing the mice. Immunohistochemical staining and Western blot analysis was performed using anti-adiponectin antibody. After sampling by intracardiac punctures,levels of serum cytokines were measured by ELISA. RESULTS Sleep deprivation in water bath exacerbated DSS induced colitis and worsened weight loss. Melatonin injection not only alleviated the severity of mucosal injury,but also helped survival during stressful condition. The expression level of adiponectin in mucosa was decreased in colitis,with the lowest level observed in colitis combined with sleep deprivation. Melatonin injection significantly(P < 0.05) recovered the expression of adiponectin. The expression levels of IL-6 and IL-17 were increased in the serum of mice with DSS colitis but decreased after melatonin injection. CONCLUSION This study suggested that melatonin modulated adiponectin expression in colonic tissue and melatonin and adiponectin synergistically potentiated antiinflammatory effects on colitis with sleep deprivation.

Effects of Age Differences on Job Satisfaction Evaluations of Employees in China

This study investigated factors that influence employees’job satisfaction in China and whether they differ across age *** was conducted using the 2014 China Labor-force Dynamics Survey,which included 6,249 employees in three age groups:634 aged 55 and older;2,569 aged 40-54;and 3,046 aged *** results indicate that when gender,age,marital status,living community type and education levels are controlled,total job satisfaction was associated with positive evaluations of income,job security,working environment,working time,promotion opportunity,job enjoyability,colleague relationships,ability and skills utilization,respect from others,and opportunities to express *** analysis results indicate that age has positive effects on total job *** older employees had the highest evaluations for job security,working environment,working time,income,job enjoyability,and total job *** middle-aged employees had the highest evaluations for respect from *** younger group had the highest evaluations for colleague relationships,ability and skills utilization,opportunities to express opinions,job enjoyability,promotion opportunity,and respect from ***,the older group did not value promotion opportunity,opportunities to express opinions,colleague relationships,ability and skills utilization,and respect from *** findings highlight the importance of examining age related needs regarding how to improve employees’job *** results suggest that employers should consider age-related challenges and needs in the workplace.

Evaluation of characteristics on titanium surface treatment for absorption of functional groups

Background In order to bind or fix bioactive materials directly to the surface of a Ti implant, the prior binding process of functional groups （FGs, -COOH and -OH） to the implant surface is necessary. Conventional binding processes are so high-cost and complex, so it is essential to find a simple and effective procedure for Ti-FG *** Various electrolyte compositions and electrochemical processing were adopted in this study to develop a relatively simple and effective Ti-FG binding process. The ability of Ti-FG binding and calcium （Ca）/phosphorous （P）absorption and corrosion resistance were evaluated according to various titanium surface treatment in electrolyte involving -COOH and -OH ion by using X ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）, field emission scanning electron microscope （FE-SEM） and potentiodynamic scan method *** In cases of -COOH, the anodic oxidation process （AN） showed an effective binding ability between -COOH and Ti surface. On the other hand, in cases of -OH, there were no significant differences in the result between the conditions used. In regard to the absorption of Ca and P on Ti surface, there was a minimal amount of Ca absorbed but no P was absorbed. The anodic oxidation series showed homogenous corrosion, whereas the electrolyte immersion （EL）series showed unstable corrosion. Although EL-OH showed a novel corrosion potential, the EL-COOH series showed good corrosion resistance over the anodic potential *** The ability of binding between FG and the Ti surface and Ca/P absorption were strongly associated with the surface potential （ξ, potential）, which was dependent on the pH of the electrolyte. Accordingly, in order to achieve the effective absorption of various FGs on the Ti surface, it is needed to develop the combination process in addition to the electric affinity, relation with the ξ, potential.

A general framework in which Ocean Heat Content(OHC) may modulate tropical cyclone intensification and decay in conjunction with Vertical Wind Shear(VWS) as the primary environmental control is formulated in terms of a two-dimensional phase *** studies of the life cycles of three tropical cyclones during the Impact of Typhoons on the Ocean in the Pacific(ITOP) field experiment during August-October 2010 are selected as examples owing to numerous Air-deployed e Xpendable Bathy Thermographs(AXBTs) and special atmospheric *** wind shears calculated from European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasting analyses within a 3°-5° *** around the center may not properly represent the VWS in nonuniform,asymmetric,and time-varying conditions in the western North *** expected,VWS is the primary environmental control during the formation and early intensification stage over regions of large OHC,and during the decay phase over regions of small *** challenging intensity forecasting problems are in the intermediate conditions of an intense tropical cyclone moving slowly over a region of low to moderate OHC when the negative feedback from the ocean may or may not lead to a decrease in intensity.

Dieckol isolated from Eisenia bicyclis extract suppresses RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis in murine RAW 264.7 cells

Objective:To demonstrate the effect of dieckol from Eisenia bicyclis on osteoclastogenesis using RAW 264.7 ***:Murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells were subjected to dieckol treatment,followed by treatment with receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand(RANKL)to induce ***-resistant acid phosphatase(TRAP)activity was examined using a TRAP activity *** blotting analysis was conducted to examine the level of osteoclast-related factors,including TRAP and calcitonin receptor(CTR),transcriptional factors,including c-Fos,c-Jun,and nuclear factor of activated T cells cytoplasmic 1(NFATc1),nuclear factor kappa-B(NF-κB),extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK),and c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK).Immunofluorescence staining was conducted to examine the expression of c-Fos,c-Jun,and ***:Among the four phlorotannin compounds present in Eisenia bicyclis,dieckol significantly hindered osteoclast differentiation and expression of RANKL-induced TRAP and *** addition,dieckol downregulated the expression levels of c-Fos,c-Jun,NFATc1,ERK,and JNK,and suppressed NF-κB ***:Dieckol can suppress RANKL-induced ***,it has therapeutic potential in treating osteoclastogenesis-associated diseases.

Optimal initiation of Helicobacter pylori eradication in patients with peptic ulcer bleeding

AIM:To evaluate when Helicobacter pylori(***)eradication therapy(ET)should be started in patients with peptic ulcer bleeding(PUB).METHODS:Clinical data concerning adults hospitalizedwith PUB were retrospectively collected and ***,sex,type and stage of peptic ulcer,whether endoscopic therapy was performed or not,methods of *** detection,duration of hospitalization,and specialty of the attending physician were *** influencing the confirmation of *** infection prior to discharge were determined using multiple logistic regression *** *** eradication rates of patients who received ET during hospitalization and those who commenced ET as outpatients were ***:A total of 232 patients with PUB were evaluated for *** infection by histology and/or rapid urease *** these patients,53.7%(127/232)had confirmed results of *** infection prior to *** multivariate analysis,duration of hospitalization and ulcer stage were factors independently influencing whether *** infection was confirmed before or after *** the patients discharged before confirmation of *** infection,13.3%(14/105)were lost to *** the patients found to be ***-positive after discharge,41.4%(12/29)did not receive *** was no significant difference in the *** eradication rate between patients who received ET during hospitalization a n d t h o s e w h o c o m m e n c e d E T a s o u t p a t i e n t s[intention-to-treat:68.8%(53/77)vs 60%(12/20),P=0.594;per-protocol:82.8%(53/64)vs 80%(12/15),P=0.723].CONCLUSION:Because many patients with PUB who were discharged before *** infection status was confirmed lost an opportunity to receive ET,we should confirm *** infection and start ET prior to discharge.

Kale Juice Improves Coronary Artery Disease Risk Factors in Hypercholesterolemic Men

Objective To evaluate the effect of 3-month kale （Brassica oleracea acephala） juice supplementation on coronary artery disease risk factors among hypercholesterolemic men. Methods Thirty-two men with hypercholesterolemia （〉 200 mg/dL） were recruited after annual health examinations among the faculty and staff at university. The subjects consumed 150 mL of kale juice per day for a 12-week intervention period. Dietary and anthropometric assessments were performed and blood samples were collected to evaluate biochemical profiles before and after supplementation. Results Serum concentrations of HDL-cholesterol, and HDL- to LDL-cholesterol ratio were significantly increased by 27% （P〈0.0001） and 52% （P〈0.0001）, respectively. The LDL-cholesterol concentration and the atherogenic index were significantly reduced by 10% （P=0.0007） and 24.2% （P〈0.0001）, respectively without affecting body mass index, waist and hip circumferences, or nutrient intakes after three months of supplementation. While there was no difference in the concentration of malondialdehyde, significant increase in glutathione peroxidase activity （P=0.0005） were accompanied by a significant increase in the serum selenium level （P=0.0132）. It was also found that the responses of these risk factors to kale juice administration were dependent on smoking status. Conclusion Regular meals supplementation with kale juice can favorably influence serum lipid profiles and antioxidant systems, and hence contribute to reduce the risks of coronary artery disease in male subjects with hyperlipidemia.
