Factors influencing stereoacuity levels after surgery to correct unilateral developmental cataracts in children

·AIM: To evaluate factors influencing stereoacuity after surgery to correct unilateral developmental pediatric cataracts. ·METHODS: We retrospectively surveyed 110 patients who had undergone removal of unilateral acquired developmental cataracts and primary posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation between February 1992 and December 2009. In all patients, stereoacuity was assessed using the Titmus test at the last follow -up period of minimum 2 years after surgery. Patients were divided into two groups according to the extent of stereoacuity : group 1 ( = 42 ) had stereoacuity values ≤ 100sec/arc and group 2 ( =68) values >100sec/arc. The values of ten parameters associated with stereoacuity were measured in each group: Cataract types, preoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of the affected eyes, preoperative inter -ocular difference of BCVA, age at cataract surgery, operative method, secondary cataract, postoperative strabismus, postoperative BCVA of the affected eyes, postoperative inter-ocular difference of BCVA, and anisometropia. ·RESULTS: The extent of stereoacuity was significantly associated with both operative method and secondary cataract ( =0.000 and =0.016, respectively). All patients in whom the posterior capsule was preserved, had poor stereoacuity >100sec/arc. Significant correlations with the extent of stereoacuity were found with postoperative strabismus ( =0.048),postoperative BCVA of the affected eyes ( =0.002), anisometropia ( =0.034). ·CONCLUSION: Postoperative stereoacuity was better in patients who underwent either optic capture or anterior vitrectomy after posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis, and who didn’t develop secondary cataracts or strabismus postoperatively. Furthermore, postoperative BCVA of the affected eyes, and anisometropia influenced the stereoacuity of the patients surgically treated for unilateral developmental pediatric cataracts. ·

Comparison of contrast sensitivity based on the surgical results for intermittent exotropia

AIM: To compare contrast sensitivity(CS) based on the surgical results for intermittent exotropia(IXT) and to examine the relationship between CS and ***: Medical records of the patients who underwent bilateral lateral rectus muscle recession for IXT between 4 and 12 years old were reviewed retrospectively. They were categorized based on the surgical results;successful correction group(n=36) and overcorrection group(esotropia ≥10 PD at 3 mo postoperatively, n=18). Using CGT-2000 test for CS was performed binocularly, and subjective reports of photophobia was investigated preoperatively and at 3 mo postoperatively. Objective photophobia was defined as a significant decrease in CS in the presence of ***: Preoperatively, there was no difference in CS between the groups. Postoperatively, under mesopic conditions, significant improvement of CS was observed at 6.3°, 4°, and 2.5° in the successful correction group and at 6.3° and 4° in the overcorrection group, regardless of glare. Under photopic conditions, at all visual angles except 0.64°, improvement in CS was noted in both groups while CS worsened significantly at 0.64° in the overcorrection group postoperatively. At all visual angles under photopic conditions postoperatively, regardless of glare, CS in the overcorrected group was significantly worse than that in the successful correction group, and CS was significantly decreased by addition of glare in both groups. All patients except one(96.4%) in the successful correction group and 8 patients(61.5%) in overcorrection group showed improvement of photophobia postoperatively, which correlated with CS under photopic conditions(P=0.001, 0.03).CONCLUSION: After surgery for IXT, CS under photopic conditions improve at all visual angles except 0.64°, while CS is significantly worse in the overcorrection group postoperatively at 0.64°. Subjective photophobia havesignificant correlation with CS under photopic conditions, and may be used as an object

Background: A phase II clinical trial of the comparison between eribulin plus gemcitabine (EG) and paclitaxel plus gemcitabine (PG) as first-line chemotherapy for patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) found that the EG regimen was less neurotoxic, but was similar in efficacy to the PG regimen. In the present study, we analyzed functional assessment of cancer therapy-taxane (FACT-Taxane) questionnaires from patients in this clinical trial to determine their quality of life (QoL). Methods: QoL was assessed using the Korean version of the FACT-Taxane questionnaires. After baseline assessment, QoL was assessed every 2 cycles for 12 cycles and every 3 cycles thereafter. The linear mixed model was used to evaluate the difference in QoL between the EG and PG arms. Results: Of the 118 enrolled patients, 117 responded to the FACT-Taxane questionnaires at baseline, 1 in the PG arm did not. Baseline QoL scores were not different between the EG and PG arms. During treatment, taxane subscale scores were significantly higher in the PG arm than in the EG arm after 2-13 cycles of chemotherapy (all P < 0.05), except for the 11th cycle. Neuropathy-specific analysis showed that patients in the PG arm had earlier and more severe neuropathic symptoms than those in the EG arm (P < 0.001). Conclusions: In our QoL analysis, the EG regimen delayed and decreased neuropathy as compared with the PG regimen. Therefore, eribulin would be a reasonable substitute for paclitaxel as first-line chemotherapy for MBC.

Changes in Physicochemical and Sensory Qualities of “Goha” Strawberries Treated with Different Conditions of Carbon Dioxide

Harvested strawberry fruit is highly perishable because of its soft texture and microbial infestation during postharvest handling. The applications of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas on the quality parameters of strawberry harvested in winter season have shown better effects in several studies. However, very little information is available for the same in summer harvested strawberry. This study was aimed at finding an optimum concentration and duration of CO2 treatment in strawberry fruit var. “Goha” harvested in summer season to increase or maintain postharvest qualities. Fresh strawberries were treated with 15%, 30% and 50% CO2 for 1 or 3 h and then stored at 4?C for up to 13 days along with untreated control. Strawberry samples treated with 50% CO2 for 1 or 3 h and both 15% and 30% for 3 h had higher firmness than samples treated with both 15% and 30% for 1 h and control. In general, total soluble solids (TSS) slightly increased or maintained during storage in all samples except control. The values of pH slightly declined whereas titratable acidity showed opposite trends. However, there was no significant difference found among CO2 treated samples. Lightness (L*) of “Goha” samples with no CO2 treatment decreased gradually while it was almost maintained in CO2 treated strawberries. Strawberry samples treated with 15% CO2 for 3 h maintained better quality with higher scores of overall quality and visual texture until 9 days of storage. Samples treated with 15% CO2 for 3 h also received lower softening scores until 9 days of storage compared to other CO2 treated samples. These results showed that 15% CO2 for 3 h condition could be an effective postharvest treatment for maintaining quality of “Goha” strawberry.

Effects of Carbon Dioxide Treatment and Modified Atmosphere Packaging on the Quality of Long Distance Transporting “Maehyang” Strawberry

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) and modified atmosphere (MA) packaging on the quality of strawberry during long distance transportation. “Maehyang” strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) with red color on 70% of the fruit surface were harvested in Gyeongnam province, Korea. The samples were placed in gas-tight chamber with 30% CO2 concentration for 3 hours at 3°C. Strawberry samples were then packaged with modified atmosphere-modified humidity (MA/MH) packaging film. Samples treated with CO2 alone and combined CO2 with MA packaging were stored for one day at 1°C, transported for 10 days at 1°C, and distributed for 3 days at 4°C. Carbon dioxide alone or combination with MA packaging was effective in maintaining quality of “Maehyang” strawberries. Carbon dioxide treatment significantly increased firmness and reduced softening index and decay rate during 14 day transportation and distribution. Samples treated with CO2 + MA had higher overall score with low softening index and weight loss after 14 days of transportation and low temperature distribution compared to CO2 treatment only. The results indicated that a short term application of CO2 or combination treatment of CO2 and MA could be good postharvest handling for maintaining freshness of “Maehyang” strawberries during long distance vessel export.

背景与目的一项比较艾日布林联合吉西他滨(eribulin plus gemcitabine,EG)或紫杉醇联合吉西他滨(paclitaxel plus gemcitabine,PG)作为转移性乳腺癌(metastatic breast cancer,MBC)患者一线化疗方案的II期临床试验发现,EG方案的神经毒性较低,但疗效与PG方案相似。在本研究中,我们分析了该临床实验中的癌症患者生命质量测评量表–紫杉烷(functional assessment of cancer therapy-taxane,FACT-Taxane)问卷评分以确定他们的生活质量(quality of life,QoL)。方法使用韩国版的FACT-Taxane问卷评估QoL。在评估基线之后,前12个疗程中每2个疗程评估1次QoL,之后每3个疗程评估1次QoL。使用线性混合模型评估EG组和PG组QoL的差异。结果在118例入组患者中,117例在基线时回复了FACT-Taxane问卷,PG组中有1例患者没有回复。EG组和PG组之间的基线QoL评分没有差异。在治疗期间,除了第11个疗程外,在第2–13个化疗疗程后,PG组紫杉烷亚量表评分显著高于EG组(均P<0.05)。神经病变特异性分析显示PG组患者的神经病症状比EG组患者更早出现且更严重(P<0.001)。结论在我们的QoL分析中,与PG方案相比,EG方案延迟并减少神经病变的发生。因此,艾日布林是MBC一线化疗药物紫杉醇的合理替代品。

Medulloblastoma（MBL）,the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor,is incurable in about one-third of patients and can lead to long-term disabilities despite current multimodal *** purpose of this study was to demonstrate in vitro biological effects of neurotrophins-3（NT-3） on MBL cells and to evaluate the growth-inhibitory effect of neurotrophin-3（NT-3）-secreting stem cells on tumor *** confirmed by western blotting that D283-MED cells express tyrosine kinase C,a specific receptor for *** the biological effects of NT-3 on MBL cells,we evaluated autophagy,apoptosis,senescence,and differentiation of tumor cells with *** NT-3 induced a concentrationdependent increase in apoptosis in the tumor cell line（P ＜ 0.001）.The high concentrations of NT-3 increased the expression of class III β-tubulin（P ＜ 0.001） and decreased the expression of Nestin（P ＜ 0.05）.NT-3-secreting stem cells were produced by nucleofecting ***-NT3 into human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells（hAT-MSCs） and were confirmed by fluorescence microscopy and ***-layered co-culture experiments with the NT-3-secreting hAT-MSCs and D283-MED MBL cells were performed,and NT-3-induced cell death was studied by 3-（4,5-dimethylathiazol-2-yl）-2,5-dephenyltetrazolium bromide（MTT） ***,the high concentrations of NT-3-secreting hAT-MSCs significantly（P ＜ 0.05） increased the death of D283-MED cells in *** present study demonstrated that both apoptotic cell death and neuronal differentiation of tumor cells were the mechanisms of growth-inhibitory effect of NT-3-secreting hAT-MSCs on MBL cell line.

Recognition of Association Between Blood Stasis Syndrome and Traumatic Injury among Doctors of Korean Medicine:A Cross-Sectional Observation Study

Objective： To investigate the diagnostic indicators and herbal treatments for blood stasis syndrome（BSS） patients with traumatic injuries and to identify the association between BSS and traumatic injury in Korea. Methods： Two-hundred and four patients with traumatic injury were recruited from the Gangnam and Daejeon branches of Jaseng Hospital of Oriental Medicine between June 2014 and December 2014. Two independent doctors of Korean medicine（DKMs） determined the diagnosis of BSS or non-BSS based on the subjects＇ signs and symptoms. The scores assigned to BSS symptoms and DKMs＇ reasons for diagnosing BSS in patients with traumatic injury were investigated. Both medication and herbal prescription records from a 3-month period were collected for all patients diagnosed with BSS by both DKMs. Results： A total of 169 of 204（82.8%） patients received consistent diagnosis related to BSS by two DKMs. Among them, 54.4%（92 cases） were diagnosed with BSS, and 45.6%（77 cases） were not diagnosed with BSS. DKMs most frequently cited symptoms of recent traumatic injury as justifications for BSS diagnoses, and also selected pain-related indicators such as abdominal pain, sharp pain and nocturnal pain as important reasons in diagnosing BSS. In addition, an inconsistency in the pattern identification theory with respect to traumatic injury was observed. Although only 92 cases（54.4%） of patients were diagnosed with BSS, 77.6% of them were prescribed decoctions for BSS. Conclusions： DKMs considered traumatic injury could cause BSS, and utilized decoction for BSS in patients with traumatic injury without confirming a diagnosis of BSS because they assumed the main symptoms or pathologies of traumatic injury to be closely related to BSS.
