Stand-level biomass models for predicting C stock for the main Spanish pine species

Background:National and international institutions periodically demand information on forest indicators that are used for global *** other aspects,the carbon accumulated in the biomass of forest species must be *** this purpose,one of the main sources of data is the National forest Inventory(NfI),which together with statistical empirical approaches and updating procedures can even allow annual estimates of the requested ***:Stand level biomass models,relating the dry weight of the biomass with the stand volume were developed for the five main pine species in the Iberian Peninsula(Pinus sylvestris,Pinus pinea,Pinus halepensis,Pinus nigra and Pinus pinaster).The dependence of the model on aridity and/or mean tree size was explored,as well as the importance of including the stand form factor to correct model ***,the capability of the models to estimate forest carbon stocks,updated for a given year,was also ***:The strong relationship between stand dry weight biomass and stand volume was modulated by the mean tree size,although the effect varied among the five pine *** humidity,measured using the Martonne aridity index,increased the biomass for a given volume in the cases of Pinus sylvestris,Pinus halepensis and Pinus *** that consider both mean tree size and stand form factor were more accurate and less biased than those that do *** models developed allow carbon stocks in the main Iberian Peninsula pine forests to be estimated at stand level with biases of less than 0.2 Mg·ha^(-1).Conclusions:The results of this study reveal the importance of considering variables related with environmental conditions and stand structure when developing stand dry weight biomass *** described methodology together with the models developed provide a precise tool that can be used for quantifying biomass and carbon stored in the Spanish pine forests in specific years when no field data are available.

In an abstract set up, we get strong type inequalities in L^p＋1 by assuming weak or extra-weak inequalities in Orlicz spaces. for some classes of functions, the number p is related to Simonenko indices. We apply the results to get strong inequal- ities for maximal functions associated to best Ф-approximation operators in an Orlicz space L^Ф.

Protein digestive dynamics of meat and bone meals in broiler chickens

This study determined the variations in protein digestibilities and digestion rates in broiler chickens offered diets containing 7 different meat and bone meals(MBM).A total of 252 male Ross 308 broiler chickens were offered 7 atypical diets largely based on maize and MBM from 24 to 28 d *** experimental diet was offered to 6 replicates with 6 birds per replicate *** were collected in their entirety from 25 to 27 d post-hatch and on 28 d *** samples were collected from the proximal jejunum,distal jejunum,proximal ileum and distal *** digestibilities of protein were determined in each segment and apparent digestibilities of amino acids were measured in the distal *** were significant differences in apparent protein digestibility coefficients in the proximal jejunum(P=0.006),where broiler chickens offered the high ash beef meal(diet 7)generated the lowest protein digestibility in the proximal jejunum(0.318).Similarly,there were significant differences in apparent digestibility coefficients in the distal jejunum(Pd distal ileum(Pd differences were found in the disappearance rate of protein and there were significant differences in all 4 segments of the small intestine(Pffered the high ash beef meal had the lowest protein disappearance rate(Pdifference was observed in the predicted protein digestion rate(P=0.486)but chickens offered the high ash beef meal had the lowest potential digestible protein(0.662,P=0.034)whereas the highest potential digestible protein(0.739)was detected in diet 5(containing a beef meal).This study contributed to the establishment of a preliminary database to include digestion rates of starch and protein into practical diet formulation.

Glucose transporter expression in the human colon

AIM To investigate by immunostaining glucose transporter expression in human colorectal mucosa in controls and patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBd). METHOdS Colorectal samples were obtained from patients undergoing lower endoscopic colonoscopy or rectosigmoidoscopy. Patients diagnosed with ulcerativecolitis(n = 18) or Crohn's disease(n = 10) and scheduled for diagnostic colonoscopy were enrolled. Patients who underwent colonoscopy for prevention screening of colorectal cancer or were followed-up after polypectomy or had a history of lower gastrointestinal symptoms were designated as the control group(CTRL, n = 16). Inflammatory status of the mucosa at the sampling site was evaluated histologically and/or endoscopically. A total of 147 biopsies of colorectal mucosa were collected and processed for immunohistochemistry analysis. The expression of GLUT2, SGLT1, and GLUT5 glucose transporters was investigated using immunoperoxidase labeling. To compare immunoreactivity of GLUT5 and LYVE-1, which is a marker for lymphatic vessel endothelium, doublelabeled confocal microscopy was used. RESULTS Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that GLUT2, SGLT1, and GLUT5 were expressed only in short epithelial portions of the large intestinal mucosa. No important differences were observed in glucose transporter expression between the samples obtained from the different portions of the colorectal tract and between the different patient groups. Unexpectedly, GLUT5 expression was also identified in vessels, mainly concentrated in specific areas where the vessels were clustered. Immunostaining with LYVE-1 and GLUT5 antibodies revealed that GLUT5-immunoreactive(-IR) clusters of vessels were concentrated in areas internal to those that were LYVE-1 positive. GLUT5 and LYVE-1 did not appear to be colocalized but rather showed a close topographical relationship on the endothelium. Reducing agent and exogenous protease additions,individually and in combination, to wheat-and sorghum-based diets interactively influence parameters of nutrient utilisation and digestive dynamics in broiler chickens

The objective of the study was to investigate the possibility that tandem inclusions of a reducing agent and a protease may advantage chicken-meat production and to ascertain if the established benefits of including sodium metabisulphite in sorghum-based diets extend to wheat-based diets. The study comprised a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial array of treatments in which either nutritionally iso-nitrogenous and isoenergetic wheat-or sorghum-based diets, without and with sodium metabisulphite(2.75 g/kg), without and with protease(1,000 units/kg) were offered to broiler chickens from 7 to 28 days post-hatch. The effects of dietary treatments on growth performance, nutrient utilisation, protein(N) and starch digestibility coefficients and digestive dynamics were determined. A preliminary investigation into the effects of two treatments on concentrations of free amino acids and glucose in the portal circulation was conducted. There was significant feed grain by sodium metabisulphite interactions(P = 0.03 to 0.005) for parameters of nutrient utilisation(AME, ME:GE ratios, N retention, AMEn). for example, sodium metabisulphite inclusions in sorghum-based diets enhanced AME by 0.18 MJ(12.47 versus 12.29 MJ/kg) but depressed AME by 0.43 MJ(11.88 versus 12.31 MJ/kg) in wheat-based diets. There was a linear relationship between starch:protein disappearance rate ratios in the distal ileum with weight gain(r =-0.484; P = 0.0012) indicating that condensed ratios(or absorption of more protein relative to starch) advantaged growth performance. Concentrations of free amino acids in the portal circulation or the post-enteral availability of certain amino acids, including the branched-chain amino acids, methionine, phenylalanine and threonine, were significantly correlated to fCR. for example, threonine concentrations were negatively correlated to fCR(r =-0.773; P = 0.005). finally, tandem inclusions of sodium metabisulphite and protease in sorghum-based diets may hold merit but it appears that t

Pluripotent stem cells localized in proliferating growth centers, the meristems, are the origin of life-long organ formation and growth in higher plants. In the shoot apical meristem of Arabidopsis thaliana, the closelyrelated ARGONAUTE proteins AGO1 and ZLL/AGO10 bind miR165/166 species to regulate mRNAs of HdZIP III transcription factors that are essential to maintaining stem cells. Several genetic studies showed thatAGO1 and ZLL/AGO10 act redundantly to maintain stem cells. By contrast, the reported biochemical datasuggested antagonistic functions: AGO1 utilizes miR165/166 to slice Hd-ZIP III mRNAs, whereas ZLL/AGO10 promotes degradation of miR165/166 and thus stabilizes Hd-ZIP III mRNAs. How these differentfunctions are balanced in stem cell regulation has remained enigmatic. Here, we show that autorepressionof AGO1 through miR168-mediated slicing of its own RNA is required to maintain the ability of AGO1 to suppress Hd-ZIP III mRNAs. Increased AGO1 expression, either in the miR168a-2 mutant or by transgenicexpression, inhibits this ability despite the presence of high levels of miR165/166, effectively uncouplingHd-ZIP III and miR165/166 expression. AGO1 activity can be restored, however, by increasing the levelsof chaperones SQN and HSP90, which promote assembly of RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). Thissuggests that cellular abundance of SQN and HSP chaperones limits AGO1-mediated RNA interferencein shoot meristem stem cell regulation. Localized misexpression of AGO1 indicates that the cells surrounding the shoot meristem primordium play a crucial role in stem cell development. Taken together, our studyprovides a framework that reconciles biochemical and genetic data, showing that restriction of AGO1 levelsby miR168-mediated autorepression is key to RISC homeostasis and the function of AGO1 in stem cellregulation.

(La0.8A0.2)MnO3(A=Sr,K) perovskite catalysts for NO and C10H22 oxidation and selective reduction of NO by C(10)H(22)

In this work, we studied the catalytic activity of LaMnO3 and(La0.8A0.2)MnO3(A = Sr, K) perovskite catalysts for oxidation of NO and C10H22 and selective reduction of NO by C10H22. The catalytic per‐formances of these perovskites were compared with that of a 2 wt% Pt/SiO2 catalyst. The La site substitution increased the catalytic properties for NO or C10H22 oxidation compared with the non‐substituted LaMnO3 sample. for the most efficient perovskite catalyst,(La0.8Sr0.2)MnO3, the results showed the presence of two temperature domains for NO adsorption:(1) a domain corre‐sponding to weakly adsorbed NO, desorbing at temperatures lower than 270 °C and(2) a second domain corresponding to NO adsorbed on the surface as nitrate species, desorbing at temperatures higher than 330 °C. for the Sr‐substituted perovskite, the maximum NO2 yield of 80% was observed in the intermediate temperature domain (around 285 °C). In the reactant mixture of NO/C10H22/O2/H2O/He,(La0.8Sr0.2)MnO3 perovskite showed better performance than the 2 wt% Pt/SiO2 catalyst: NO2 yields reaching 50% and 36% at 290 and 370 °C, respectively. This activity improvement was found to be because of atomic scale interactions between the A and B active sites, Sr2+ cation and Mn4+/Mn3+ redox couple. Thus,(La0.8Sr0.2)MnO3 perovskite could be an alternative free noble metal catalyst for exhaust gas after treatment.

farming-Biodiversity Segregation or Integration? Revisiting Land Sparing versus Land Sharing debate

Land Sparing (LSP) was proposed to spatially segregate biodiversity and production in order to maximize both, while Land Sharing (LSH) defenders posit that farming and nature integration is preferable, through eco-agriculture and low-input systems. Based on a multidisciplinary review on historical land-use data, ecological aspects, agricultural production potential, economic and food security topics, we summarize LSP/LSH major findings and caveats. Although LSH still has to address some issues, LSP relies on a series of assumptions that are not supported by data, particularly regarding the positive effects of intensification on agriculture expansion. furthermore, we developed conceptual models to theoretically predict the responses of biodiversity and ecosystems services in dynamic landscapes with different natural habitat proportions and different intensification levels on the farmed areas. Agriculture intensification may expand farmland reducing habitat area fostering population declines at the “natural” patches (via habitat reduction and decreasing species intra patch flux through the matrix), as well as at the farm site by direct effect of intensification (heterogeneity reduction and pesticide use), leading to a species extinction and ecosystems services loss. This multiple negative effect of agriculture intensification is worsening in regions where habitat proportion is below 30%, such as in many tropical biodiversity hotspots, making LSH a much safer strategy for conservation and food security.

Physical activity and chronic back conditions:A population-based pooled study of 60,134 adults

Background:Little is known about the association between different types of physical activity(PA)and chronic back conditions(CBCs)at the population *** investigated the association between levels of total and type-specific PA participation and ***'.The sample comprised 60,134 adults aged>16 years who participated in the Health Survey for England and Scottish Health Survey from 1994 to *** logistic regression models,adjusted for potential confbunders,were used to examine the association between total and type-specific PA volume(walking,domestic activity,sport/exercise,cycling,football/rugby,running/jogging,manual work,and housework)and the prevalence of ***'.We found an inverse association between total PA volume and prevalence of *** with inactive participants,the fully adjusted odds ratio(OR)for very active participants(≥15 metabolic equivalent h/week)was 0.77(95%confidence interval(CI):0.69—0.85).Participants reporting≥300 min/week of moderate-intensity activity and≥75 min/week of vigorous-intensity activity had 24%(95%CI:6%—39%)and 21%(95%C1:11%—30%)lower odds of CBCs,*** odds of CBCs were observed for participation in high-level manual domestic activity(OR=1.22;95%CI:1.00-1.48).Sport/exercise was associated with CBCs in a less consistent manner(e.g.,OR=1.18(95%CI:1.06—1.32)for low levels and OR=0.82(95%CI:0.72—0.93)for high levels of sport/exercise).Conclusion'.PA volume is inversely associated with the prevalence of CBCs.

Protein sources and starch-protein digestive dynamics manipulate growth performance in broiler chickens defined by an equilateraltriangle response surface design

A total of 360 male,off-sex Ross 308 chicks were offered 10 dietary treatments from 14 to 35 d post ehatch in an equilateral-triangle response surface design feeding study in order to confirm the importance of protein and amino acid digestive dynamics in broiler *** 3 apical diets were nutritionally-equivalent containing either soybean meal,non-bound amino acids or whey protein concentrate as the major source of dietary protein and amino *** blends of the 3 apical diets comprised the balance of 7 diets and each dietary treatment was offered to 6 replicate cages with 6 birds per *** performance,nutrient utilisation,apparent protein and starch digestibility coefficients were determined in 4 small intestinal *** optimal weight gain(2,085 g/bird)and feed conversion ratios(fCR,1.397)were generated by diet 50S50W which included a 50:50 blend of apical diets rich in whey protein concentrate and soybean *** chickens offered diet 50S50W also had the highest experimental and predicted jejunal digestibility(0.685 in proximal jejunum and 0.823 in distal jejunum).fCR was not correlated with apparent distal ileal digestibility coefficient(P>0.05)of protein but was correlated with apparent protein digestibility in proximal jejunum(r=-0.369,P=0.040)and distal jejunum(r=-0.316,P=0.015).Surplus dietary starch was correlated with increased fat pad weight(r=0.781,P?0.008).The findings confirmed the relevance of protein digestion rate,reflected by jejunal digestibility,on feed conversion of broiler chickens.A balance between protein-bound and non-bound crystalline or synthetic amino acids may be required for optimal growth and protein digestion.
