Plant glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchored proteins at the plasma membrane-cell wall nexus

Approximately 1% of plant proteins are predicted to be post-translationally modified with a glycosylphospha- tidylinositol （GPI） anchor that tethers the polypeptide to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane. Whereas the synthesis and structure of GPI anchors is largely conserved across eukaryotes, the repertoire of functional domains present in the GPl-anchored proteome has diverged substantially. In plants, this includes a large fraction of the GPl-anchored proteome being further modified with plant-specific arabinogalactan （AG） O-glycans. The impor- tance of the GPl-anchored proteome to plant development is underscored by the fact that GPI biosynthetic null mutants exhibit embryo lethality. Mutations in genes encoding specific GPl-anchored proteins （GAPs） further supports their contribution to diverse biological processes, occurring at the interface of the plasma membrane and cell wall, including signaling, cell wall metabolism, cell wall polymer cross-linking, and plasmodesmatal transport. here, we review the literature concerning plant GPl-anchored proteins, in the context of their potential to act as molecular hubs that mediate interactions between the plasma membrane and the cell wall, and their potential to transduce the signal into the protoplast and, thereby, activate signal transduction pathways.

Superplasticity of fine-grained Mg-10Li alloy prepared by severe plastic deformation and understanding its deformation mechanisms

The superplastic behavior and associated deformation mechanisms of a fine-grained Mg-10.1 Li-0.8Al-0.6Zn alloy(LAZ1011)with a grain size of 3.2μm,primarily composed of the BCCβphase and a small amount of the hCPαphase,were examined in a temperature range of 473 K to 623 *** microstructural refinement of this alloy was achieved by employing high-ratio differential speed *** best superplasticity was achieved at 523 K and at strain rates of 10^(-4)-5×10^(-4)s^(-1),where tensile elongations of 550±600%were *** the heating and holding stage of the tensile samples prior to tensile loading,a significant increase in grain size was observed at temperatures above 573 ***,it was important to consider this effect when analyzing and understanding the superplastic deformation behavior and *** the investigated strain rate range,the superplastic flow at low strain rates was governed by lattice diffusion-controlled grain boundary sliding,while at high strain rates,lattice diffusion-controlled dislocation climb creep was the rate-controlling deformation *** was concluded that solute drag creep is unlikely to *** the late stages of deformation at 523 K,it was observed that grain boundary sliding led to the agglomeration of theαphase,resulting in significant strain *** mechanism maps were constructed forβ-Mg-Li alloys in the form of 2D and 3D formats as a function of strain rate,stress,temperature,and grain size,using the constitutive equations for various deformation mechanisms derived based on the data of the current tests.

Optimal deployment schedule of an active twist rotor for performance enhancement and vibration reduction in high-speed flights

The best active twist schedules exploiting various waveform types are sought taking advantage of the global search algorithm for the reduction of hub vibration and/or power required of a rotor in high-speed conditions. The active twist schedules include two non-harmonic inputs formed based on segmented step functions as well as the simple harmonic waveform input. An advanced Particle Swarm assisted Genetic Algorithm（PSGA） is employed for the optimizer. A rotorcraft Computational Structural Dynamics（CSD） code CAMRAD II is used to perform the rotor aeromechanics analysis. A Computation Fluid Dynamics（CFD） code is coupled with CSD for verification and some physical insights. The PSGA optimization results are verified against the parameter sweep study performed using the harmonic actuation. The optimum twist schedules according to the performance and/or vibration reduction strategy are obtained and their optimization gains are compared between the actuation cases. A two-phase non-harmonic actuation schedule demonstrates the best outcome in decreasing the power required while a four-phase non-harmonic schedule results in the best vibration reduction as well as the simultaneous reductions in the power required and vibration. The mechanism of reduction to the performance gains is identified illustrating the section airloads, angle-of-attack distribution, and elastic twist deformation predicted by the present approaches.

In this paper, the problem of stability analysis for neural networks with time-varying delays is considered. By constructing a new augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii＇s functional and some novel analysis techniques, improved delaydependent criteria for checking the stability of the neural networks are established. The proposed criteria are presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities （LMIs） which can be easily solved and checked by various convex optimization algorithms. Two numerical examples are included to show the superiority of our results.

Direct Observation of Tunnelling through 100-nm-Wide All Metal Magnetic Junction into Si

Nanoscaled spin-dependent tunnelling lines were patterned on doped Si and studied for tunnelling from the SDT ferromagnetic layer through an insulating barrier into Si. The injection contacts have the form of long strips with width and separation, ranging from 100 nm to 2 μm, and are patterned using e-beam lithography. The measured I-V characteristics versus temperature （80 to 300K） on the 100 nm scaled devices between the layered-magnetic metals and the semiconductor clearly showed ballistic tunnelling, with weak dependence on the temperature. This is qualitatively different, at elevated temperatures, from 2-μm-wide scaled-up spin-dependent tunnelling structures, where thermal-ionic emission was observed to dominate carrier transport.

Comparative effects of composted organic waste and inorganic fertilizer on nitrate leachate from the farm soils of northern Guam

The purpose of this study was to quantify the release of nitrate into vadose zone as well as the nitrogen-holding capacity of compost applied on calcareous soils of northern Guam amended with both inorganic fertilizer and composted organic waste,to examine potentially adverse effect of these nutrient materials to groundwater *** different nitrogen levels each of the composted organic waste and the inorganic fertilizer were applied to corn(maize)(farmland)study plots for three consecutive seasons,two dry and one rainy *** each season,soil organic matter(SOM,w/w%)content and carbon-nitrogen ratio(C/N,w/w%),were determined for analysis of the nitrogen-holding capacity of these calcareous *** levels in soil pore water were also determined for study of potential groundwater *** three seasons,compost plots showed higher SOM%contents and lower C/N%than fertilizer *** is,compost-treated soils showed higher SOM content and adsorbed more nitrogen under normalized soil mass than did fertilizer-treated *** levels in pore water were generally higher on compost plots during early stages of corn but were generally higher on fertilizer plots during active leaf,tasseling,and maturity *** the rainy season,nitrate leachate seemed to increase,but this trend could not be confirmed because rainfall amounts were not ***,composted organic waste proved to be a good amendment for soil productivity and agricultural sustainability while reducing nitrate leachate from northern Guam farmland.

In this review,the history and outlook of gas-phase CO_(2)activation using single electrons,metal atoms,clusters(mainly metal hydride clusters),and molecules are discussed on both of the experimental and theoretical *** the development of bulk solid-state materials for the activation and conversion of CO_(2)into value-added products have enjoyed great success in the past several decades,this review focuses only on gas-phase studies,because isolated,well-defined gas-phase systems are ideally suited for high-resolution experiments using state-of-the-art spectrometric and spectroscopic techniques,and for simulations employing modern quantum theoretical *** unmatched high complementarity and comparability of experiment and theory in the case of gas-phase investigations bear an enormous potential in providing insights in the reactions of CO_(2)activation at the atomic *** all of these examples,the reduction and bending of the inert neutral CO_(2)molecule is the critical step determined by the frontier orbitals of reaction *** on the results and outlook summarized in this review,we anticipate that studies of gas-phase CO_(2)activations will be an avenue rich with opportunities for the rational design of novel catalysts based on the knowledge obtained on the atomic level.

Evaluation of microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-xCe-0.5Zn alloys by nano-indentation

The microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-xCe-0.5Zn （x=0.5, 1.5, 2.5, molar fraction, %） alloys were examined using a nano-indentation technique. The alloys were fabricated using a vacuum induction melting method under an argon atmosphere The microstruetures of Mg-xCe-0.5Zn alloys mainly consist ofa-Mg and eutectic Mg12Ce phase. The volume fraction and size of the eutectic Mgl2Ce phase increase with increasing Ce contents. Nano-indentation test results show that the indentation hardness and elastic modulus of the eutectic Mg12Ce phase are higher than those of the a-Mg matrix. In addition, the mean indentation hardness and elastic modulus of the Mg-xCe-0.5Zn alloys increase with the Ce addition amount increasing.

Fluorene-based alternating and statistical copolymers were synthesized by employing reaction methods of Wittig,heck and *** copolymers were classified into three groups with the photoluminescence(PL)emission maxima at420,475 and 500 nm,*** copolymers with two chromophores having PL emission maxima at 420 and475 nm emitted light with the emission maximum at 475 nm on photoexcitation at 365 nm and improved the quantumefficiency by the energy ***,the intramolecular energy transfer was inefficient compared to the intermolecularenergy transfer when the two chromophores were apart from each other in the range of the Forster critical ***-pyridinedivinylene alternating copolymer was synthesized by the Wittig reaction and found to have physical,electronic andelectrochemical properties of the individual units *** double-layered light emitting diode(LED)with the statisticalcopolymer as an emitting layer and the pyridine-containing copolymer as an electron transporting-hole blocking layer,whichwere sandwiched between ITO and Al,displayed a quantum efficiency of 0.1%.
