Relationship between plasma cathepsin S and cystatin C levels and coronary plaque morphology of mild to moderate lesions： an in vivo study using intravascular ultrasound

Background Cathepsin S and its endogenous inhibitor cystatin C are implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, especially in the plaque destabilization and rupture leading to acute coronary syndrome. However, whether circulating cathepsin S and cystatin C also change in association with coronary plaque morphology is unknown yet. Methods We recruited 98 patients with unstable angina （UA, n=56） or stable angina （SA, n=-42） who had a segmental stenosis resulting in 〉20% and 〈70% diameter reduction in one major coronary artery on coronary angiography. Thirty-one healthy subjects served as controls. Intravascular ultrasound （IVUS） was used to evaluate plaque morphology. Plasma cathepsin S and cystatin C were measured as well. Results At the culprit lesion site, plaque area （（7.85±2.83） mm^2 vs （6.53±2.92） mm^2, P=0.027）, plaque burden （（60.92±11.04）% vs （53.87±17.52）%, P=0.025）, remodeling index （0.93±0.16 vs 0.86±0.10, P=0.004） and eccentricity index （0.74±0.17 vs 0.66±0.21, P=0.038） were bigger in UA group than in SA group. Plasma cathepsin S and cystatin C were significantly higher in patients than in controls （P〈0.01）. Plasma cathepsin S was higher in UA group （（0.411±0.121） nmol/L） than in SA group （（0.355±0.099） nmol/L, P=0.007）, so did the plasma cystatin C （（0.95±0.23） mg/L in UA group, （0.84±0.22） mg/L in SA group; P=0.009）. Plasma cathepsin S positively correlated with remodeling index （r=0.402, P=0.002） and eccentricity index （r=0.441, P=0.001）, and plasma cystatin C positively correlated with plaque area （r=0.467, P 〈0.001） and plaque burden （r=0.395, P=0.003） in UA group but not in SA group. Conclusions Plasma cathepsin S and cystatin C increased significantly in UA patients. In angina patients, higher plasma cathepsin S may suggest the presence of vulnerable plaque, and higher plasma cystatin C may be a clue for larger atherosclerotic coronary plaque.

Sensitizing photoactive metal-organic frameworks via chromophore for significantly boosting photosynthesis

Photosensitization related to energy/electron transfer process is of great importance to natural ***,we proposed a promising strategy to improve the sensitizing ability of the typical photoactive MOFs(UiO-Ir)by engineering its metal coordination center with NBI(1,8-naphthalenebenzimidizole)*** resulting MOFs(UiO-Ir-NBI)exhibited a strong sensitizing ability for significantly boosting ***,the catalytic yield of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide with UiO-Ir-NBI can reach 99%,over 6 times higher than that with UiO-Ir(16.4%).Moreover,UiO-Ir-NBI exhibited an excellent catalytic stability and a broad substrate tolerance,highlighting its great application *** investigations revealed that the strong visible light absorption,long excited state lifetime and efficient electron-hole separation of UiO-Ir-NBI greatly contributed to harvesting visible light and facilitating interface electron/energy transfer for efficient solar energy *** work provides a new horizon to boost photosythesis of MOFs by engineering their metal sensitizing centers at a molecular level.

Effects of cooling rate on microstructure and microhardness of directionally solidified Galvalume alloy

The influences of cooling rate on the phase constitution,microstructural length scale,and microhardness of directionally solidified Galvalume(Zn-55Al-1.6Si)alloy were investigated by directional solidification experiments at different withdrawal speeds(5,10,20,50,100,200,and 400μm·s^(-1)).The results show that the microstructure of directionally solidified Galvalume alloys is composed of primary Al dendrites,Si-rich phase and(Zn-Al-Si)ternary eutectics at the withdrawal speed ranging from 5 to 400μm·s^(-1).As the withdrawal speed increases,the segregation of Si element intensifies,resulting in an increase in the area fraction of the Si-rich *** addition,the primary Al dendrites show significant refinement with an increase in the withdrawal *** relationship between the primary dendrite arm spacing(λ_(1))and the thermal parameters of solidification is obtained:λ_(1)=127.3V^(-0.31).Moreover,as the withdrawal speed increases from 5 to 400μm·s^(-1),the microhardness of the alloy increases from 90 HV to 151 *** is a combined effect of grain refinement and second-phase strengthening.

Effect of Ti Particles on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of AZ91 Magnesium Matrix Composites

Spherical micro-Ti particle(TiP)-reinforced AZ91 magnesium alloy composites were fabricated by semi-solid stirring assisted ultrasonic vibration,which were then subjected to hot *** microstructure results showed that the addition of Ti particles refined the grain size and decreased the texture intensity of the as-extruded AZ91 *** Al3Ti phase with a thickness of 100 nm formed at the Ti/Mg interface,which had a non-coherent relationship with the magnesium *** as-extruded 1 vol.%TiP/AZ91 composite exhibited the best comprehensive mechanical properties,with yield strength,ultimate tensile strength,and elongation at break of 366 MPa,456 MPa,and 14.6%,respectively,which were significantly higher than those of the AZ91 ***,the addition of Ti particles can improve the strength and ductility of the AZ91 alloy,demonstrating the value of magnesium matrix composites for commercial applications.

Combined effect of atorvastatin and probucol on plasma cystatin C levels and severity of coronary lesion in patients with borderline coronary lesion

Background The plasma cystatin C concentration （PcyC） has been demonstrated to have prognostic value in acute coronary syndrome, but the study of PcyC in patients with borderline coronary lesions is limited. Moreover, the effects of atorvastatin and probucol on PcyC and the severity of coronary lesions are unknown. This study was to evaluate the effects of the combination of atorvastatin and probucol on PcyC and severity of coronary lesion in patients with borderline coronary lesions. Methods One hundred and thirty consecutive patients with borderline coronary lesions （40% to 60% isolated single stenosis assessed by quantitative coronary angiography） were enrolled into the borderline coronary lesion （BCL） group, and one hundred and thirty-six subjects without coronary lesions comprised the controls （CTR）. The subjects in the BCL group were randomized into routine treatment （RTT, n=60）, and combined treatment with atorvastatin 20 mg plus probucol 1.0 g daily added to routine medication （CBT, n=70）, both groups were treated for 6 months continuously. The levels of PcyC, high-sensitive C-reactive protein （hs-CRP）, total cholesterol （TC）, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol （LDL-C）, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol （HDL-C）, and triglycerides （TG） were determined. One hundred and four subjects in the BCL group were rechecked by coronary angiography. Results PcyC levels were significantly higher in the BCL group than in the CTR group; （2003.26＋825.73） ng/ml vs. （1897.83＋664.46） ng/ml （P 〈0.01）. Compared with patients in the RTT group, the levels of PcyC, TC, LDL-C, TG and hs-CRP were significantly lower in the CBT group （P 〈0.05）. Moreover, there was a trend towards a slight decrease in the RTT patients, （54.38＋10.67）% vs. （50.29＋9.89）% （P 〉0.05）, and a significant decrease in the CBT patients, （53.65＋9.48%） vs. （40.38＋12.93）% （P 〈0.05）, in the mean percent stenosis of borderline coronary lesions before and after six months of treatment. The photocatalytic oxidative coupling of thiols is one of the most popular methods to synthesize the *** and its derivatives(TPAs)are promising for the above reaction,but suffer from the easy polymerization and difficult *** overcome these obstacles while controlling the photogenerated electrons transfer directly to target substrates,herein,we constructed one TPA-based metal-organic framework(MOF),(Me_(2)NH_(2))[Sr(TCBPA)]·DMA·3H_(2)O(1),by direct self-assembly of tris(4′-carboxybiphenyl)amine(H_(3)TCBPA)and photoredox inert strontium ion(Sr^(2+)).DFT calculations revealed that the valence band maximum(VBM)and the conduction band minimum(CBM)are mainly located on TCBPA^(3-),successfully inhibiting the undesirable electron migration to metal *** results indicated that 1 displays superior performance than homogeneous H_(3)TCBPA,which may result from the abundant π…π and C—H…π interactions between the well-arranged TCBPA^(3-)and the build-in electric field between the anionic framework and the Me_(2)NH^(2+).This work highlights that immobilizing TPAs into MOFs is one promising approach to designing heterogeneous photocatalysts for the synthesis of disulfides by oxidative coupling of thiols.
