Rice Husk Bio-Chars as Adsorbent for Methylene Blue and Ethinylestradiol from Water

Biobased adsorbents are eco-friendly materials used for water and wastewater treatment and air *** research work explores the potential use of rice husk chars as a low-cost adsorbent for pollutants from water,such as methylene blue and *** husk chars are prepared by combustion of rice husks(RH-Char)or pre-treated rice husks(PT-Char).A third char(M-Char)supplied by a local company which uses rice husks as combustion material is also *** chars are characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM)in conjunction with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX),X-ray powder diffraction(XRD),and zeta-potential *** three bio-chars are tested as adsorbent for the removal of two wastewater contaminants:methylene blue(MB)and ethinylestradiol(EE2).According to the results,RH-Char and PT-Char present zeta-potential values near−52 mV,whereas M-Char shows a zeta-potential value of−32 *** RH-Char and PTChar are rich in amorphous SiO_(2) and M-Char has crystalline SiO_(2)(cristobalite).The bio-chars remove MB and EE2 efficiently showing the following results for the adsorption capacity of MB(inμmol g^(−1)):769.2(RH-Char),41.2(PT-Char),and 31.7(M-Char).The adsorption capacity values for EE2(inμmol g^(−1))are:33.1(RH-Char),19.1(PT-Char),and 16.9(M-Char).The information gathered in the present work evidences the potential of rice husks bio-chars for bio-remediation and may in future contribute to the conversion of a side-stream from the rice industry into value-added materials.

Small-scale biorefinery from sugarcane bagasse offers new possibilities to the sugar and ethanol *** aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a small-scale biorefinery for the production of xylitol from sugarcane *** liquid fraction from the autohydrolysis treatment was selected as the source of sugars for xylitol and two scenarios were analyzed for the residual solid:ethanol or pellet production.A technical-economic analysis of alternatives was *** internal rate of return(IRR)was used to compare the selected *** highest IRR values were obtained when processing 70,000 dry tons per year of *** results showed promising prospects for a small-scale biorefinery with capacities above 20,000 dry tons per year(xylitol and pellets),and above 50,000 dry tons per year(xylitol and ethanol).

Optimal vaccination strategies on networks and in metropolitan areas

This study presents a mathematical model for optimal vaccination strategies in interconnected metropolitan areas,considering commuting *** is a compartmental model with a vaccination rate for each city,acting as a control *** commuting patterns are incorporated through a weighted adjacency matrix and a parameter that selects day and night *** optimal control problem is formulated to minimize a functional cost that balances the number of hospitalizations and vaccines,including restrictions of a weekly availability cap and an application capacity of vaccines per unit of *** key findings of this work are bounds for the basic reproduction number,particularly in the case of a metropolitan area,and the study of the optimal control *** analysis and numerical simulations provide insights into disease dynamics and the effectiveness of control *** research highlights the importance of prioritizing vaccination in the capital to better control the disease spread,as we depicted in our numerical *** model serves as a tool to improve resource allocation in epidemic control across metropolitan regions.

In recent years,the taxonomy and systematics of the cartilaginous fish taxa from the Eocene La Meseta Formation of Seymour(Marambio)Island,Antarctica have been extensively discussed in a series of papers,resulting in a complete revision of the Antarctic Eocene ichthyofauna housed in the Vertebrate Paleontology collection of the Museo de La Plata,*** collection constitutes one of the largest and taxonomically most diverse in the world,with approximately 20000 specimens,which provides a solid database used for the analysis of qualitative and quantitative chondrichthyan taxonomic *** information provided herein might be useful to understand the sudden decline in chondrichthyan taxonomic diversity towards the top of La Meseta Formation as well as its potential relationship with environmental changes during the Eocene.

The present study aimed to evaluate multi-element concentrations(Al,As,Ca,Cd,Co,Cr,Cu,Fe,Mg,Mn,Mo,Ni,Pb,Sr)in suspended particulate material(SPM)collected from Ensenada de La Paz(ELP)lagoon,Baja California Sur,Mexico in two different periods(September and May)to comprehend their origin,geochemical behavior,mass transfer and associated ecotoxicological *** 24 hr variation coefficient of volumetric SPM levels were found to be 51.7%in September and 40.5%in May,signifying the effects of oceanic *** calculated enrichment factor(EF)values for all the studied elements were of higher magnitude because of the high surface area and oxide nature of SPM,and in this study,Mo had the highest EF of 46.77 probably due to its origin from continental *** the ecotoxicological perspective,the integrated toxic risk index revealed low toxic risk to the benthic ***,the mean-ERM-Quotient calculated using the particulate concentrations of As,Cd,Cr,Cu,Ni,Pb indicated 9%probability of toxicity to *** comprehensive geochemical and ecotoxicological assessment of particulate metal concentrations in the ELP lagoon signify low to moderate contamination.

Bloom-forming cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates in five Argentinian reservoirs:Multi-year sampling

Harmful algal blooms are important threats to reservoir *** a 15-year period,we sampled five Argentinian reservoirs to identify the responsible species for harmful algal blooms and determine the water quality factors driving their *** reservoirs exhibit diverse morphological and hydrological characteristics and are distributed across varying climatic *** blooms included an array of species,including toxin producers such as Raphidiopsis raciborskii,Aphanizomenon gracile,and Microcystis *** contrast,dinoflagellate blooms were predominantly characterized by *** cyanobacterial blooms primarily occurred in the shallower reservoirs located in warmer regions,whereas dinoflagellate blooms occurred where temperatures were *** most intense blooms occurred during the summer,and although cyanobacterial and chlorophyte blooms co-occurred,they never coexisted with dinoflagellate *** identified cyanotoxins in the reservoirs over the past three years,a phenomenon previously unreported in the *** that these reservoirs are drinking water sources for human populations,ongoing and systematic monitoring is needed to protect public *** the proliferation of algae and cyanobacteria in reservoirs requires resource management at the watershed level,and in the case of the Itiyuro and El Limon,requires binational management with Bolivia.

The reaction electronic flux in chemical reactions

The mechanism of a chemical reaction can be characterized in terms of chemical events that take place during the *** events are bond weakening/breaking and/or bond strengthening/*** reaction electronic flux(REF),a concept that identifies and rationalizes the electronic activity taking place along the reaction coordinate,has emerged recently as a powerful tool for characterizing the mechanism of chemical reactions.A quantitative theory introducing new descriptors for characterizing reaction mechanisms is presented in detail and three illustrative examples are *** nucleophilic substitution reactions the REF indicates that bond breaking or forming events may be leading the electronic activity whereas in the methanol decomposition reaction by copper oxide,the REF allows to discover that consecutive electronic reductions of copper together with bond breaking processes control the course of the reaction.
