Microbiome and colorectal carcinogenesis:Linked mechanisms and racial differences

Various studies have shown the interplay between the intestinal microbiome,environmental factors,and genetic changes in colorectal cancer(cRc)*** this review,we highlight the various gut and oral microbiota associated with cRc and colorectal adenomas,and their proposed molecular mechanisms in relation to the processes of“the hallmarks of cancer”,and differences in microbial diversity and abundance between race/*** with cRc showed increased levels of Bacteroides,Prevotella,Escherichia coli,enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis,Streptococcus gallolyticus,Enterococcus faecalis,Fusobacterium nucleatum(***)and clostridium *** levels of Bacteroides have been found in African American(AA)compared to caucasian American(cA)***-inflammatory bacteria such as *** and Enterobacter species were significantly higher in ***,AA patients have been shown to have decreased microbial diversity compared to cA *** studies have shown that using microbiome profiles in conjunction with certain risk factors such as age,race and body mass index may help predict healthy colon vs one with adenomas or *** is one of the most common bacterial infections in humans and is more prevalent in Non-Hispanic-Blacks as compared to Non-Hispanic *** condition causes increased systemic inflammation,immune dysregulation,gut microbiota dysbiosis and thereby possibly influencing colorectal ***-associated bacteria such as Fusobacterium,Prevotella,Bacteroides and Porphyromonas have been found in cRc tissues and in feces of cRc ***,a deeper understanding of the association between oral and gastrointestinal bacterial profile,in addition to identifying prevalent bacteria in patients with cRc and the differences observed in ethnicity/race,may play a pivotal role in predicting incidence,prognosis,and lead to the development of new treatments.

Ni/Al Intermetallics Plasma Transferred Arc Processing

In-situ alloy development during surface processing allows for a limitless materials selection to protect components exposed to severe service conditions. In fact surface alloying offers the possibility to strengthen surface components with alloys that would not be possible to process otherwise. This work used Plasma transferred arc (PTA) hardfacing for surface alloying. Different amounts of aluminium powder, 5-25%, were added to a Ni based superalloy, from Hastealloy c family, in the atomized form. The mixture was homogeneized in a ball mill and PTA deposited on carbon steel substrate. The influence of different processing parameters on the final surface alloy was evaluated as current intensity and depositing velocity were varied. coatings were characterized by optical and scanning electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Vickers microhardness profiles, under a 500g load. Results showed that PTA hardfacing is an adequate surface alloying. For the conditions tested increasing hardness was obtained by solid solution for the lower amounts of Al added and due to the new intermetallic phases for the richer Al mixture.

The Influence of High Temperature Exposure on the Wear Performance of a Ni Based Alloy PTA coating

Degradation phenomena like wear and corrosion, may have their effects accelerated as components operate at high temperature. The aim of this work is to make an indirect evaluation of the influence of high temperature exposure on wear behavior of Ni coatings. A Ni-cr-Mo-W alloy, was deposited with Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) process. An indirect approach based on the Ahrrenius relationship was used to evaluated long time exposures at high temperatures. To simulate longer exposures at lower temperatures, coatings were exposed to higher temperatures for the same time interval. So coatings were soaked in an air furnace at 650°c, 1000°c and 1200°c. Metal/metal wear behavior was evaluated by pin-on-disc tests. Pins were removed from the coatings by eletrodischarge machining and rubbed against a Vc31 quenched and tempered tool steel. Two sets of wear tests were run at 2m/s, for different loads (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0Kg) and for different sliding distances (120, 720, 1080, 1440 and 1800m).coatings characterization was done by scanning electronic microscopy and Vickers microhardness. Results showed as temperature is increased, coatings wear performance is altered, and this is associated with microstructural changes.

Ab externo canaloplasty results and efficacy: a retrospective cohort study with a 12-month follow-up

Background:The aim of this study is to review the outcomes of canaloplasty versus canaloplasty combined with phacoemulsification in a retrospective cohort study and to evaluate the efficacy of these methods in terms of intraocular pressure(IOP)lowering effect,postoperative complications and additional glaucoma surgery or reintroduction of medical therapy over a 12-month ***:In a retrospective cohort study,602 eyes with primary open angle glaucoma(POAG)were treated with canaloplasty or canaloplasty combined with *** results were evaluated separately in two main groups;group A canaloplasty(262 eyes)and group B canaloplasty combined with phaco(322 eyes).Each group was then subdivided into three additional groups according to the severity of *** criteria for successful treatment were evaluated between three IOP ranges;IOP≤16 mmHg,18 mmHg and 21 *** success was considered the percentage of eyes reaching target IOP with no medication and partial success with *** A and B subgroups were compared using the Kaplan Meier *** IOP,reduction of antiglaucoma agents and additional IOP lowering methods were also *** follow-up time was 12 *** significance was set at pcomplete intraoperative cannulation of Schlemm’s canal resulting in conversion to other glaucoma surgery occurred in 18 eyes(2.99%).In both of the main groups,postoperative hyphema,descemet membrane detachment and transient IOP rise were the most common postoperative *** mean IOP in group A and subgroups at 12 months was 13.26±4.5 mmHg,15.19±3.97 mmHg and 18.09±3.75 *** in group B mean IOP was 14.51±4.69 mmHg,14.40±4.11 mmHg and 14.25±2.76 *** success was achieved in group A in 69.19,74.51 and 74.31%of *** group B complete success was achieved in 81.60,77.33 and 83.33%of eyes *** Meier between groups A and B was statistically significant for IOP≤16

Application of a simplified ADM1 for full-scale anaerobic co-digestion of cattle slurry and grass silage:assessment of input variability

Mathematical modeling of anaerobic digestion is a powerful tool to predict gas yields and optimize the *** Anaerobic Digestion Model No.1(ADM1)is a widely implemented model for this ***,modeling full-scale biogas plants is challenging due to the extensive substrate and parameter characterization *** study describes the modification of the ADM1 through a simplification of individual process phases,characteristic components and required ***,the ability of the simplified model to simulate the co-digestion of grass silage and cattle slurry was evaluated using data from a full-scale biogas *** impacts of substrate composition(crude carbohydrate,protein and lipid concentration)and variability of carbohydrate degradability on simulation results were assessed to identify the most influential *** indicated that the simplified version was able to depict biogas and biomethane production with average model efficiencies,according to the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(NSE)coefficient,of 0.70 and 0.67,respectively,and was comparable to the original ADM1(average model efficiencies of 0.71 and 0.63,respectively).The variability of crude carbohydrate,protein and lipid concentration did not significantly impact biogas and biomethane output for the data sets *** contrast,carbohydrate degradability seemed to explain much more of the variability in the biogas and methane ***,the application of simplified models provides a reliable basis for the process simulation and optimization of full-scale agricultural biogas plants.
