Seed Vigor Variation of <i>Agave durangensis</i>Gentry (Agavaceae)

Agave durangensis propagates basically by seeds. This species is economically important because it supports a mescal industry in Durango, Mexico. At present, its exploitation is overall by collecting plants from the wild populations. In order to reduce the negative impact of the collection in the natural populations of A. durangensis and to improve the mescal industry, it is necessary to establish plantations with selected seeds for a high vigor. In this paper, the variation in morphological features, physiological behavior of germination, and biochemical indicators of seed vigor among three natural populations of A. durangensis was assessed. Variation was found in the seed weight (0.68 to 1.15 mg/seed), seed dimensions (3.51 × 5.29 to 4.62 × 5.92 mm), germinability reduction at 15°°C related to 25°C (4% to 51%), germination rate at 25°C (44.0 to 48.5 seeds/day) and at 15°C (5.17 to 6.77 seeds/day), development reduction at 15°C related to 25°C (86.66% to 91.99%), levels of seed accumulated phenols (71 to 85 μg/seed), antioxidant potential (42% to 50% reduction of DPPH*), seed alcohol dehydrogenase activity (ADH) (180 to 1100 μmol NAD+/mg protein/min), highest ADH activity after imbibitions at 25°C (310.24 to 520.2 μmol NAD+/mg protein/min), and highest ADH activity after imbibitions at 15°C (170.74 to 440.71 μmol NAD+/mg protein/min). The variation in the seed vigor was revealed by a principal component analysis (PCA) based on all the parameters evaluated. PCA clearly discriminated among the three populations.

Sensors Applied to Plant Breeding: Leaf Reflectance Indices (LRIs) and Resistance to Anthracnose in Capsicum annuum L. var. annuum

The present work investigated the efficiency of leaf reflectance indices in the identification of Capsicum annuum L. var. annuum resistant to anthracnose in the fruit. Twenty-five F5:6 families originating from contrasting parents were assessed;the parents were accession UENF 2285 (susceptible to anthracnose) and accession UENF 1381, a hot pepper resistant to anthracnose in the fruit. The experiment was carried out in an experimental field in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between May and October of 2021. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design, with three replications and five plants per plot. Fifteen LRIs were estimated using a CI-710 portable mini leaf spectrometer. The assessments covered all plant growth after flowering, and a total of six assessments were performed at 15-days intervals, beginning at 35 and ending 120 days after flowering (DAFs). Analysis of variance in a split-plot scheme was performed, as were tests of mean groupings and principal components analysis (PCA). The best period for evaluating leaf reflectance indices in C. annuum var. annuum is 120 days after flowering. The leaf reflectance indices PRI, CNDVI and Ctr2 stood out as effective in distinguishing between resistant and susceptible genotypes.

Subclinical Hypothyroidism, Its Manifestations and Management a Case Report

Introduction: Thyroid states can be associated with psychiatric manifestations, be it hypothyroid, hyperthyroid or even euthyroid. The effect of depression is significant in subclinical hypothyroidism. Sometimes, its signs and symptoms are indistinguishable from Major Depressive Disorder. Our immunological system and early embryologic origins also play a role in the coexistence of other comorbidities like Pernicious Anemia. Case: A 35-year-old Hispanic female presented with significant low mood, somnolence, weight gain, increased hunger, cold intolerance and epigastric pain. It is important to note the variety of clinical manifestations of our hypothyroidism patient to understand its associations and help us with a better approach to treatment. Discussion: Standard approaches to treatment of Subclinical Hypothyroidism will depend mostly on laboratory findings such as TSH levels and free T4. Individualized therapy chosen for our patient was based on his mood symptoms, laboratory findings and coexistence of Pernicious Anemia. The use of daily 0.025 mg of levothyroxine, 10 mg of escitalopram oxalate and weekly injections of cyanocobalamin were treatments of choice. Conclusion: During follow up of our patient, we can conclude that Levothyroxine and Escitalopram Oxalate were able to improve hypothyroidism symptoms, reduce thyroglobulin and peroxidase antibodies and improve mood symptoms including cognitive functions. In addition to this, weekly cyanocobalamin injections were integrated into the management. As parietal cell antibodies decreased, gastrointestinal symptoms also disappeared. By addressing the concerns of our patient, we improved quality of care, and this is reflected in the patient’s wellbeing in physical and psychological.

This critical review of the literature shows that there is a close link between the microbiome,the gut,and the brain in Parkinson's *** vagus nerve,the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system,is involved in the regulation of immune response,digestion,heart rate,and control of *** can detect microbiota metabolites through its afferents,transferring this gut information to the central nervous *** and clinical studies have shown the important role played by the gut microbiome and gut-related factors in disease development and progression,as well as treatment *** findings suggest that the gut microbiome may be a valuable target for new therapeutic strategies for Parkinson's *** studies are needed to better understand the underlying biology and how this axis can be modulated for the patient's benefit.

Characterization of the negative carbon isotope shift in segment C2,its global implications as a harbinger of OAEla

Lower Cretaceous C-isotope records show intermittent negative/positive spikes,and consistent patterns of coeval chemostratigraphic curves thus document shifts that signal simultaneous responses of temporal changes in the global carbon *** standard pattern registered by theδ^(13)C_(org)andδ^(13)C_(carb)in Lower Aptian sediments includes distinct isotope segments C1 to C8(Menegatti et al.,1998).In the El Pui section,Organya Basin,Spain,C-isotope segment C2 is the longest interval preceding segments C3-C6 associated with oceanic anoxic event la(OAE la),and reveals a distinct negative shift of^1.8‰to^2.23‰defining the C-isotope pattern within that *** inorganic carbon(TIC),total organic carbon(TOC),δ^(13)C_(org),microfacies,n-alkanes show no difference before,during,or after the negative *** biomarkers indicate that organic matter(OM)mainly originates from algal/microbial sources because short-chain length homologues(≤nC_(19))***_(20)through nC_(25)indicate some contribution from aquatic vegetation,but little from higher plants(>nC_(25)),as also suggested by the terrestrial/aquatic ratio of n-alkanes or(TAR)=[(nC_(27)+nC_(29)+nC_(31))/(nC_(15)+nC_(17)+nC_(19))](averages 0.085).We suggest that conjoint pulses of contemporaneous LIPs(Ontong Java)and massive explosive volcanism in northeast Asia,the Songliao Basin(SB-V),best conform to plausible causes of the negative intra-C2 carbon isotopic excursion(CIE)at that *** of its apparent common occurrence the intra-C2 inflection could be a useful marker harbinger to the more pronounced CIE C3,the hallmark of OAE1a.

Microhardness,Microstructure and Electrochemical Efficiency of an Al(Zn/xMg) Alloy after Thermal Treatment

The influence of Mg on the microhardness,microstructure and electrochemical efficiency of Al（Zn/xMg） alloys have been ***（Zn/xMg） alloys were prepared by metal mould casting method to diminish the process cost and to generate an alloy with homogenous microstructure and less casting *** hardness,X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were performed to determine the Mg influence on the AlZn *** efficiency was used to relate the influence of Mg with the thermal treatment on the corrosion behavior of the Al（Zn/xMg） *** results reveals the presence of Al 32（MgZn） 49 phase for two events;the first is when the Mg content is above 5.49% in as-cast condition,and the second after the thermal treatment is carried out at 450℃ for 5 *** results also show that the microhardness and electrochemical efficiency have been influenced by the presence of Al 32（MgZn） 49 *** addition of Mg modifies the microstructure,increases the content of Al 32（MgZn） 49 phase and improves the electrochemical efficiency.

Growth and nutrient accumulation of Brazil nut trees(Bertholletia excelsa) in agroforestry at different fertilizer levels

The Brazil nut tree（Bertholletia excelsa） is a frequent component of agroforestry systems in the Amazon because of its adaptation to nutrient-poor upland soils and multiple *** investigated the aboveground biomass production（kg dry weight）,nutrient uptake and requirements（N,P,Ca,Mg,K） of Brazil nut trees of different sizes grown under agroforestry conditions and fertilized at different *** of 70 experimental trees with different size were harvested and stem,branches and leaves were *** contents were determined for three trees of varying *** tree growth was fast,but variability was high,suggesting considerable potential for the improvement of this economically important *** trees responded to increased levels of fertilizer and lime with significantly increased foliar nutrient contents and growth,probably because of the improved availability of Mg and Ca for which the species seems to have a relatively high *** contrast to Brazil nut trees grown in forest or dense plantations,the agroforestry trees invested a substantial part of their biomass and nutrients in large branches and developed spreading *** improve stem form,reduce competition with associated crops for light and recycle nutrients,regular pruning of lower branches or planting arrangements that favor self-pruning are *** measures would also increase the recycling of Ca and Mg,large quantities of which are contained in the branches.

Several decomposed body parts were received for examination by the Forensic Anthropology section of the Medico-legal Institute of João Pessoa,Paraíba,*** portions of the lower and upper limbs,ribs,vertebrae,and a skull were thoroughly *** biological profile indicated a male individual with an estimated age range between 23 and 57 years and a mean age of 35.2 years(SD=9.4;phase IV,Suchey-Brooks).The skeleton showed injuries caused by sharp force and sharp-blunt force trauma that affected all body ***,the lesions are mainly in the diaphyseal segments of the long bones,sacrum,pelvis,mandible,maxilla,scapulae,sternum,vertebrae,the distal epiphysis of the left fibula,and the distal epiphysis of the left tibia displayed characteristics compatible with injuries produced *** was not possible to determine the cause of *** resulted in a positive *** of common difficulties faced in forensic practice,it is often not possible for forensic anthropologists to go to the crime scene,X-ray or body scanners are frequently unavailable,and the victim’s medical and/or dental records are sometimes *** difficulties make identification ultimately depend on genetic analysis,which is more time-consuming than other identification *** this,bone fragment examination in dismemberment cases is a complex *** Anthropology can shed light on cases involving the identification of dismembered remains,which are challenging because of the number of traumatic injuries,as well as different injury patterns,on bones.

Objective:To evaluate the 15-lipoxygenase inhibitory activity of the methanol leaf extracts of Commelina benghalensis,Tradescantia fluminensis(***)and Tradescantia ***:The inhibitory activity was evaluated using a spectrophotometric assay by observing the increase in absorbance at 234 nm due to the formation of the product 13-hydroperoxyoctadecadienoic *** extracts were also tested for the presence of terpenoids,saponins,tannins,flavonoids,steroids,phenolic compounds,alkaloids and cardiac ***:All the extracts inhibited the action of 15-lipoxygenase at a concentration of 0.2μg/*** and Tradescantia zebrina exhibited higher than 50%inhibition with *** at 87.2%.*** was partitioned with ethyl acetate and hexane and their IC_(50)values were determined at 8.72μg/mL and 98.04μg/mL,***:*** is a potentially good source of 15-lipoxygenase inhibitors.

Evaluation of Changes in Actin Filaments of RK13 Cells Infected with <i>Malassezia pachydermatis</i>

Background: Malassezia pachydermatis is the main causative agent of canine otitis and also of a myriad of dermatological problems in companion animals;its interaction mechanisms with host cells are still unclear. Objectives: To establish an in vitro infection model of M. pachydermatis-exposed RK13 cells in order to evaluate cell morphological changes as well as changes in the structure of actin filaments. Methods: Cultures of RK13 cells were infected with M. pachydermatis, alterations caused by the yeast were evaluated by optical and fluorescence microscopy. Results: M. pachydermatis adheres itself to the cell and produces the formation of multiple agglomerates that cause changes in cell morphology, formation of cell aggregates in overlays, presence of syncytia and destruction of cell culture structure. The damaged cells presented changes in the actin filaments consisting of thickening of the cell cortex and loss of stress fibers. On the other hand, the formation of perinuclear actin rings in the yeasts was observed. Conclusions: An in vitro infection model was established with M. pachydermatis and alterations in cell morphology were observed consisting of changes in the structure of the actin filaments, overgrowth of the cells and the presence of syncytia.
