Improving thermal comfort in mosques of hot-humid climates through passive and lowenergy design strategies

Mosques have intermittent operational schedules with short-term occupancy during the five daily *** occupancy level of the daily prayers is a fraction compared to the mandatory Friday prayers with full ***,the same thermal control mechanism is operated within the same large prayer hall to maintain the thermal comfort of the ***,the comfort requirements are often not met due to the short span of operation during prayer ***,mosques have a very high energy usage as the same energyintensive system is operated even during minimal occupancy *** current research aims at using a passive approach towards design to achieve the comfort conditions during the low occupancy daily prayer times without employing mechanical *** simulations are carried out on a validated model of the case study building to investigate the impact of the west-facing Qiblah wall as the congregation stands in proximity to this *** design alternatives are tested in conjunction with ventilation strategies to holistically assess the thermal comfort of the *** show that as much as 4-6℃reduction in indoor wall surface temperature can be achieved with a suitable Qiblah wall design,which reduces the mean radiant temperature of the occupants by 2-4℃.Combined with ventilation strategies,thermal comfort can be significantly improved by at least 40%for the prayers during the hottest times of the day,and as much as 80%for night-time *** suggest that suitable comfort conditions can be achieved without the need for air-conditioning for at least two or three of the five daily prayers.

Increase of indoor temperature compared with outdoor temperature is a major concern in modern house design. Occupants suffer from this uncomfortable condition because of overheating indoor temperature. Poor passive design causes heat to be trapped, which influences the rise in indoor temperature. The upper part, which covers the area of the roof, is the most critical part of the house that is exposed to heat caused by high solar radiation and high emissivity levels. During daytime, the roof accumulates heat, which increases the indoor temperature and affects the comfort level of the occupants. To maintain the indoor temperature within the comfort level, most house designs usually depend on mechanical means by using fans or air conditioning systems. The dependence on a mechanical ventilation system could lead to additional costs for its installation, operation, and maintenance. Thus, this study concentrates on reviews on passive design and suggests recommendations for future developments. New proposals or strategies are proposed to improve the current passive design through ventilated and cool roof systems. It is possible to achieve the comfort level inside a house throughout the day by reducing the transmitted heat into the indoor environment and eliminating the internal hot air. These recommendations could become attractive strategies in providing a comfortable indoor temperature to the occupants as well as in minimizing energy consumption.

This study examined the effects of melatonin on leptin-induced changes in sperm parameters in adult rats. Five groups of Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with either leptin or leptin and melatonin or melatonin for 6 weeks. Leptin was given daily via the intraperitoneal route （60 μg kg-1 body weight） and melatonin was given in drinking water （10 mg kg-1 or 20 mg kg-1 body weight per day）. Upon completion, sperm count, sperm morphology, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine, Comet assay, TUNEL assay, gene expression profiles of antioxidant enzymes, respiratory chain reaction enzymes, DNA damage, and apoptosis genes were estimated. Data were analyzed using ANOVA. Sperm count was significantly lower whereas the fraction of sperm with abnormal morphology, the level of 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine, and sperm DNA fragmentation were significantly higher in rats treated with leptin only. Micmarray analysis revealed significant upregulation of apoptosis-inducing factor, histone acetyl transferase, respiratory chain reaction enzyme, cell necrosis and DNA repair genes, and downregulation of antioxidant enzyme genes in leptin-treated rats. Real-time polymerase chain reaction showed significant decreases in glutathione peroxidase 1 expression with increases in the expression of apoptosis-inducing factor and histone acetyl transferase in leptin-treated rats. There was no change in the gene expression of caspase-3 （CASP-3）. In conclusion, the adverse effects of leptin on sperm can be prevented by concurrent melatonin administration.

Objective:To determine the anti-proliferative activity of Abrus precatorius(***)leaf extracts and their effect on cell ***:*** leaves were extracted successively with hexane,ethyl acetate and methanol by Soxhlet *** extract was prepared by decoction at 50 ℃.Extracts of *** leaves were used to treat selected cancer and normal cell lines for72 ***,3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl)2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay was performed to determine cell *** of cell cycle arrest,apoptosis assay and apoptosis protein expressions were determined by flow ***:Methanolic extract of *** leaves showed the lowest IC50 on MDA-MB-231 cells at(26.40±5.40)μg/*** cytometry analysis revealed that cell arrest occurred at G0/G1 phase and the apoptosis assay showed the occurrence of early apoptosis at 48 h in MDAMB-231 cells treated with methanolic extract of *** *** extract of *** leaves induced apoptosis by upregulation of Bax,p53 and caspase-3 and downregulation of ***:Methanolic extract of A precatorius leaves promotes MDA-MB-231 cell death by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis possibly via the mitochondrial-related pathway.

The Effect of NaHCO<sub>3</sub>as Catalyst via Electrolysis

Renewable energy is a kind of energy that comes from natural sources like water, sunlight, wind and so on. Water electrolysis is currently the most dominant technology used for hydrogen production from renewable sources because of high energy conversion efficiency. In this present work, the effect of NaHCO3 via electrolysis?was studied. Stainless steel is chosen to be as the electrode and different concentration of NaHCO3 are used as alkaline solutions in electrolysis system. The rates of hydrogen gas produced using different concentration of NaHCO3 and pH value of every sample were measured. The experimental results that the performance of water electrolysis was highly affected by NaHCO3, the rate of hydrogen gas showed that 0.4 M of NaHCO3 and 65 ml/min at pH 8.2 are the best amount.

Knowledge Management (KM), defined as the creation and application of new knowledge, is becoming a good source of competitive advantage. Employee innovation is increased by the development and sharing of knowledge. Failure to implement a knowledge management system for the organization is a major concern for the management information system society. With the drive for necessary attention to this issue, this paper intends to provide the means of implementing knowledge management system. The success of this implementation would come from the reduction of loss of critical information and improvement of data retrieval. This paper would also guide the implementation principles and review the implementation process in a step-by-step approach. This paper investigates the knowledge management implementation system requirements in various manners. The investigation covers the ways of devising the implementation system for information sorted by definition, requirements, and implementation. The source definition and data retrieval process is also investigated. This paper would consider the cooperation of the knowledge workers as one of the important aspect of the implementation. In addition to these, the importance of centralization in storage and retrieval process for necessary information is also included in the scope of this paper. The ways of eliminating loss of knowledge when the skilled workers leave or retire is also a subject matter of this paper. The contribution of this paper goes to more clarification of knowledge management system implementation.

The main purpose of the study was to enhance the stability and therapeutic effects of Curcumin(Cur)through nanoformulation with gum Arabic(GA)as a coating agent through an efficient synthetic *** antioxidant properties of the developed nanoparticles(Cur/GANPs)were assessed through several in vitro assays,such asβ-carotene bleaching activity,DPPH,and nitric oxide scavenging activities in addition to evaluating its inhibitory activity on angiotensinconverting enzyme(ACE).The cytotoxicity of Cur/GANPs was evaluated in vitro using different types of human cancer cells including breast cancer(MCF7,MDA-MB231),liver cancer(HepG2),and colon cancer(HT29)*** prepared particles displayed an elliptical shape with a size ranging between 20–260 nm and a potential difference of–15 *** Cur/GANPs exhibited significant antioxidant activity compared to free curcumin when using concentrations between 31.5 and 500μg/*** Cur/GANPs also had inhibited the growth of all cancer cell lines in a proportional trend with concentrations ***,the encapsulation with gum Arabic has augmented the antioxidant and anti-neoplastic effects of ***,Cur/GANPs may have effective therapeutic properties in diseases attributed to oxidative stress like cancer and hypertension.

Phytocompounds of Anonna muricata leaves extract and cytotoxic effects on breast cancer cells

Objective: To identify the phytochemical compounds from Annona muricata(A. muricata) and to determine their in vitro anti-proliferative activities against breast cancer cells, MCF7 and MDA-MB-231. Methods: A. muricata leaves were successively extracted by soxhlet method using n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol, and decocted with water. Each extract was analysed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry(GCMS) and characterized with Wiley and NIST library searches. Anti-proliferative activity of each extract was evaluated on MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells using MTT assay. Results: The GCMS analysis of different solvent extracts of A. muricata leaves showed presence of different chemical groups of compounds such as steroids, terpenoids, phenolic compounds, sugars, sugars alcohol and others including vitamin E. Ethyl acetate leaves extract exhibited the lowest IC_(50) value on the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell and n-hexane leaves extract showed the the lowest IC_(50) value on the MCF-7 breast cancer cell. Conclusion: Steroids and phenolic compounds were the main phytocompound groups identified from all A. muricata leaves extracts. The antiproliferative activity of n-hexane and ethyl acetate extract towards breast cancer MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 respectively might be due to the presence of biologically active compounds in the extracts, hence, providing some scientific evidences of the effectiveness of its traditional usages.

Solid polymeric electrolyte of poly(ethylene)oxide-50% epoxidized natural rubber-lithium triflate (PEO-ENR50-LiCF3SO3)

A solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) films consist-ing of polyethylene oxide (PEO), 50% epoxi-dized natural rubber (ENR50) and LiCF3SO3 with various compositions of PEO-ENR50 and vari-ous weight percentage of LiCF3SO3 were pre-pared by solution casting technique. The poly-mer electrolyte films were characterized using DSC, XRD and AC impedance spectroscopy. The SPE with the PEO-ENR50 composition of 70-30 shows the highest conductivity of 4.2 × 10-5 Scm-1 at the 15 wt.% of LiCF3SO3 compared with the other composition of PEO/ENR50. This composition was then chosen to investigate the effect of LiCF3SO3 on the thermal property, structure and conductivity of the electrolyte. The highest room temperature conductivity of 1.4 × 10-4 Scm-1 was achieved at 20 wt.% of LiCF3SO3. The conductivity result is supported by the DSC and XRD analysis which showed the semi- crystalline nature of PEO turning to amor-phous state due to the increase in LiCF3SO3 content.

Development and psychometric properties of the Malaysian elder abuse scale

Elder abuse is an emerging issue of serious concern with life-threatening consequences. This study aimed to develop and assess the validity and reliability of a new scale to assess elder abuse. A cross-sectional multistage sampling technique was used to obtain a nationally representative sample of older Malaysians. The iterative development process resulted in a 16-item, four-dimension scale. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 10-item scale with three factors. The value of Cronbach’s alpha for total scale and its subscales indicated sufficient internal consistency. Multitrait scaling analysis also showed good convergent and discriminant validity. Furthermore, predictive validity of the proposed scale was established by demonstrating a statistically significant association between elder abuse and depression through multiple logistic regression analysis. The findings from this study demonstrate an acceptable level of validity and reliability for new scale. This scale can be used by health and social care workers to identify elder abuse cases.
