Aim:To investigate the effects of cisplatin on the human non-small cell lung carcinoma(NCI-H460)cell line regarding cytotoxicity,genotoxicity,and expression of genes associated with apoptosis(BIRC5)and autophagy(BECN1).Methods:Cell cultures were treated with cisplatin concentrations(0.16-33.3μmol/L)for 48 *** and acute and chronic cytotoxicities were assessed using the MTT,clonogenic,and cytokinesis-block micronucleus *** expression of BIRC5 and BECN1 was evaluated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain ***:Cisplatin IC50(0.33μmol/L)increased micronucleus frequency 2.50 *** was also cytotoxic in the 0.6-33.3μmol/L range,with reduced expression of the BIRC5 gene,suggesting induction of *** reducing the expression of the BIRC5 gene,33.3μmol/L cisplatin increased the expression of the BECN1 gene,suggesting that autophagy can be related to cisplatin ***:Cisplatin inhibited NCI-H460 growth,and cisplatin IC50 induced genotoxic *** higher cisplatin concentrations are used,the expression of genes associated with apoptosis and autophagy was *** results points to a further investigation of the role of autophagy in cisplatin resistance.

N^+ ion irradiation is utilized to tune the structure and mechanical properties of a Cu48Zr47.2Al4Nb0.8 bulk metallic glass composite(BMGC). Ion irradiation increases the disorder near the surface, as probed by neutron diffraction, and, moreover, causes the phase transformation from B2Cu Zr to B19’ CuZr martensitic phase in the studied BMGC. The tensile plasticity of the BMGC is dramatically improved after ion irradiation, which results from multiple shear banding on the surface and the martensitic transformation of the B2 to B19’ Cu Zr martensitic phase. The experimental results are strongly corroborated by complementary molecular dynamic simulations.

Aphids （Hemiptera： Aphididae） are phytophagous insects that are important agricultural pests. The enormous negative economic impacts caused by aphids worldwide are well known, and are mostly due to their high multiplication rate and the transmission of phytopathogenic viruses. Aphid management strategies mainly involve chemical treatments which are pollutants and are increasingly inefficient, since aphids have developed multiple insecticide-resistant mechanisms. Among the most economically important species is the green peach aptfid Myzus persicae Sulzer （Aphididae： Macrosiphini）, which is able to colonize a wide range of host plants belonging to many different families, and transmits numerous plant viruses. Because of its large prevalence, M. persicae has been the target of massive insecticide treatments; consequently, it has evolved several insecticide-resistant mechanisms. In this work, a collection of expressed genes from M. persicae is presented in order to identify putative genes involved in xenobiotic detoxification. After cdNA cloning and sequencing, 959 expressed sequence tags （EST） were annotated. Most sequences matched known genes corresponded to metabolism proteins （26%）, ribosomal proteins （ 23 % ） and structural proteins （8%）. Among them, several sequences corresponded to proteins putatively involved in sensing, degradation or detoxification of plant xenobiotic products.

Pathogenicity of bacterium, Xenorhabdus nematophila isolated from entomopathogenic nematode (Steinernema carpocapsae) and its secretion against Galleria mellonella larvae

The entomopathogenic bacterium, Xenorhabdus nematophila was isolated from the hemolymph of Galleria mel- lonella infected with Steinernema carpocapsae. The bacterial cells and its metabolic secretions have been found lethal to the Galleria larvae. Toxic secretion in broth caused 95% mortality within 4 d of application whereas the bacterial cells caused 93% mortality after 6 d. When filter and sand substrates were compared, the later one was observed as appropriate. Similarly, bacterial cells and secretion in broth were more effective at 14% moisture and 25 °C temperature treatments. Maximum insect mortality (100%) was observed when bacterial concentration of 4×106 cells/ml was used. Similarly, maximum bacterial cells in broth (95%) were penetrated into the insect body within 2 h of their application. However, when stored bacterial toxic secretion was applied to the insects its efficacy declined. On the other hand, when the same toxic secretion was dried and then dissolved either in broth or water was proved to be effective. The present study showed that the bacterium, X. nematophila or its toxic secretion can be used as an important component of integrated pest management against Galleria.

Kenya has a rich mammalian fauna. We reviewed recently published books and papers including the six volumes of Mammals of Africa to develop an up-to-date annotated checklist of all mammals recorded from Kenya. A total of 390 species have been identified in the country, including 106 species of rodents,104 species of bats, 63 species of even-toed ungulates(including whales and dolphins), 36 species of insectivores and carnivores, 19 species of primates,five species of elephant shrews, four species of hyraxes and odd-toed ungulates, three species of afrosoricids, pangolins, and hares, and one species of aardvark, elephant, sirenian and hedgehog. The number of species in this checklist is expected to increase with additional surveys and as the taxonomic status of small mammals(e.g., bats, shrews and rodents) becomes better understood.

Urinary nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of a Bangladeshi cohort with hepatitis-B hepatocellular carcinoma: A biomarker corroboration study

AIM: To establish if a distinct urinary metabolic profile could be identified in Bangladeshi hepatitis-B hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients compared to cirrhosis patients and ***: Urine samples from 42 Bangladeshi patients with HCC (39 patients with hepatitis-B HCC), 47 with cirrhosis on a background of hepatitis B, 46 with chronic hepatitis B, and seven ethnically-matched healthy controls were analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. A full dietary and medication history was recorded for each subject. The urinary NMR data were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squared discriminant analysis (OPLS-dA) techniques. differences in relative signal levels of the most discriminatory metabolites identified by PCA and OPLS-dA were compared between subject groups using an independent samples Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test with all pairwise multiple comparisons. Within the patient subgroups, the Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare metabolite levels depending on hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg) status and treatment with anti-viral therapy. A Benjamini-Hochberg adjustment was applied to acquire the level of significance for multiple testing, with a declared level of statistical significance of P differences in age (P d body mass index (P d to controls (P dly elevated in HCC compared to controls; and serum creatinine levels were significantly reduced in the HCC group compared to the cirrhosis group (P = 0.004). Use of prostate-specific antigen testing in Medicare beneficiaries:Association with previous evaluation
