Efficacy of Photogem（Hematoporphyrin Derivative） as a Photoactivatable Larvicide against Aedes aegypti （Diptera： Culicidae） Larvae

Dengue vector is responsible for millions of deaths every year and has caused disastrous impacts on health systems. The continuous use of chemical insecticides, such as carbamates, pyrethroids and organophosphates generates resistant populations of the mosquito, therefore, new control methods must be investigated. The joint action of the population and guidelines for preventing the reproduction of the mosquito associated with the use of photoactivatable insecticides can be the alternative for the control of epidemiological outbreaks in affected regions. In this study, the photo-larvicidal activity of Photogem^（PG）, a derivative of hematoporphyrin, was investigated against 2nd-early 3rd instar of Aedes aegypti larvae （Diptera： Culicidae） under different lighting conditions （artificial lighting system and sunlight）. The dynamics of PG accumulation was characterized by CLSM （confocal laser scanning microscopy） and total time PG eliminationin solution was investigated by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The maximum photo-activity of PG was observed in 0.5 h under sunlight exposure which achieved 100% larval mortality. Fluorescence images showed a uniform distribution of PG along the digestive tract. PG remained stable in the sunlight for 48 h and in an artificial lighting system for longer periods, therefore, it can be used for the control ofAedes aegypti larvae as a new alternative to chemical insecticides. The method is considered environmentally friendly due to its rapid degradation in the presence of light. Further studies are required, so that the potential of the technique can be explored in real breeding places.

Review of Studies on the Last Enzymes in Bacteriochlorophyll (Bchl) and Chlorophyll (Chl) Biosynthesis

This paper summarizes the information available online related to mechanisms of Chlorophyll and Bacteriochlorophyll biosynthesis, emphasizing four enzymes in its last steps. The biosynthesis of Chlorophyll (Chl)/Bacteriochlorophyll (Bchl) is essential for the occurrence of photosynthesis. Four enzymes catalyze parts of the last chemical reactions steps to biosynthesize Bchl/Chl;they are: The Light-Dependent Protochlorophyllide (Pchlide) Oxidoreductase (LPOR: EC 1.***.1.33), the Light-Independent Pchlide oxidoreductase (DPOR: EC 1.***.7.7), Chlide Reductase (COR: EC 1.***.99.35) and the Divinyl Reductase (DVR: EC 1.***.1.75). These enzymes catalyze the reductions reactions of tetrapyrrole’s rings in the Chlorophyll and Bacteriochlorophyll biosynthesis process. This review has the aim to organize, analyze and compare the most important discoveries related to these four enzymes discovered so far. The comparisons are made with the information from the bibliography used, and the sequence of these enzymes got from online database. Sequence alignment, phylogenetic and molecular evolutionary analysis of all the four enzymes was conducted to find their levels of similarities.

In recent years, the Continuous Welded Rail （CWR） track has been rapidly developing and is being widely used, and it is well known that one of the critical influencing factors to its stability is the environmental conditions which will have a huge influence to the rail temperature. The bigger the temperature variation, the more complicated the design is. But for countries located in Africa, especially Mozambique, where the temperature variation is small, if the CWR track parameters values are reasonably chosen, the CWR track design, maintenance and laying should not have to be very strict. By this way, saving labor, materials and eventually *** main propose of this thesis is to find the reasonable parameters for a CWR track for Mozambique. This thesis studies the CWR track design under different environmental condition. Three CWR Track structures will be compared, being two structures similar to the one from Mozambique, which is a cape gauge track and the other a similar to the one from China, which is a standard gauge track, this comparison helps in analyzing the track behaviors. Two method were used for the CWR track design, one being analytical （Matlab） and the second numerical （FEM, ANSYS）. Both method were validated, and proved to be *** thesis, First presents the literature review of the basic knowledge needed to do this paper. Second, it presents the theory and model used, where, the selected code is the Chinese CWR track code and the FEM software that is used for modeling is the ANSYS APDL. Third, the paper presents the parametric study of a CWR track, where, it is analyzed the parameters that influence the track buckle strength. Fourth, it is done a study of CWR track on bridges, analyzing the influencing factors to the rail additional forces on bridge. Fifth, the reasonable parameters are researched. The deterioration of environmental conditions is the major contributory factor to poor health and quality of life that hinders sustainable development in any *** mining is one of the major industries that contribute to the economy of a country but it also impacts the *** chemical parameters of the coal,overburden,soil and sediments along with the coal mine drainage(CMD)were investigated in order to understand the overall environmental impact from high sulphur coal mining at northeastern coalfield(India).It was found that the total sulphur content of the coal is noticeably high compared to the overburden(OB)and *** volatile matter of the coal is sufficiently high against the high ash content of the soil and *** water samples have a High Electrical Conductivity(EC)and high Total Dissolve Solid(TDS).Lower values of pH,indicate the dissolution of minerals present in the coal as well as other minerals in the mine rejects/*** chemical and nano-mineralogical composition of coal,soil and overburden samples was studied using a High Resolution-Transmission Electron Microscopy(HR-TEM),Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy(EDS),Selected-Area Diffraction(SAED),Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy(FE-SEM)/EDS,X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR),Raman and Ion-Chromatographic analysis,and Mossbauer *** different geochemical analysis it has been found that the mine water sample from Ledo colliery has the lowest pH value of 3.30,Tirap colliery samples have the highest electrical conductivity value of5.40 ms cm^(-1)Both Ledo and Tirap coals have total sulphur contents within the range 3-3.50%.The coal mine water from Tirap colliery(TW-15 B)has high values of Mg^(2+)(450 ppm),and Br^-(227.17 ppm).XRD analysis revealed the presence of minerals including quartz and hematite in the *** analysis of coal mine overburden(OB)indicates the presence both of pyrite and marcasite which was also

Load Forecasting for Control of the Use of Transmission System for Electric Distribution Utilities

The Brazilian electric sector reform established that the remuneration of distribution utilities must be through the management of their systems. This fact increased the necessity of control and management of load flows through the connection points between the distribution systems and the basic grid as a function of the contracted amounts. The objective of this control is to avoid that these flows exceed some thresholds along the contracted values, avoiding monetary penalties to the utility or unnecessary amounts of contracted flows that overrates the costumers. This question highlights the necessity of forecast the flows in these connection points in sufficient time to permit the operator to take decisions to avoid flows beyond the contracted ones. In this context, this work presents the development of a neural network based load flow forecaster, being tested two time-series neural models： support vector machines and Bayesian inference applied to multilayered perceptron. The models are applied to real data from a Brazilian distribution utility.

Iatrogenic hypothyroidism and acute psychosis

We present the case of a 39 years old woman who was referred to our day hospital unit because of anxiety. The patient didn’t endorse any past psychiatric symptoms except for an acute psychotic episode in August 2010. In June 2010 she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (likely due to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) and was started on Methilmazole 30 mg. Shortly after that she reported persecutory ideation and hallucinations which quickly progressed, until she was hospitalized in a psychiatric facility. Upon admittance her lab work revealed severe hypothyroidism. Methilmazole was suspended, she was started on Haloperidol, and the symptoms went into remission after four days. Despite the fact that she self discontinued Haloperidol shortly after discharge, she showed no sign of psychotic symptoms. While it is widely accepted that hypothyroidism can cause depressive symptoms, to the best of our knowledge very few cases of psychotic symptoms associated with this condition have been described. Based on the patient’s clinical history, on the rapid onset and remission of symptoms, on the lab values and on the doses of medication that were prescribed, we hypothesize that our patient’s psychotic episode was caused by iatrogenic hypothyroidism.

Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Forefoot: Current Concept Review

A minimally invasive surgical technique (MIS) is any procedure that could be less invasive than open surgery used for the same purpose. Though MIS often involves small incisions or percutaneous approaches, its main goal is to achieve good therapeutic results with the least damage to functional anatomic structures. Minimal invasiveness in orthopaedic forefoot surgery, including first ray and lesser toes, with its growth over the last two decade, showed many advantages and good outcomes with the aim to obtain fewer complications due to a contained approach, shorter surgical time and exposure, lesser post-operative risk of infection, lesser pain, hospitalization and post-operative recovery time, compared with traditional open approaches. This appears particularly true for what concerns hallux valgus surgical correction. MIS techniques have proven in the literature to be reliable, providing today comparable results with traditional open approaches.

Despite its enormous benefits,mining is respon-sible for intense changes to vegetation and soil ***,after extraction,it is necessary to rehabilitate the mined areas,creating better conditions for the establishment of plant species which is *** study evaluated mineral and organic fertilization on the growth,and carbon and nitrogen(N)metabolism of two Crotalaria species[Cro-talaria spectabilis(exotic species)and Crotalaria maypu-rensis(native species from Carajás Mineral Province(CMP)]established on a waste pile from an iron mine in CMP.A control(without fertilizer application)and six fertilization mixtures were tested(i=NPK;ii=NPK+micronutrients;iii=NPK+micronutrients+organic compost;iv=PK;v=PK+micronutrients;vi=PK+micronutrients+organic compost).Fertilization contributed to increased growth of both species,and treatments with NPK and micronutrients had the best results(up to 257%***),while organic fertilization did not show *** Crotalaria had a greater number of nodules,higher nodule dry mass,chlorophyll a and b contents and showed free ammonium as the predominant N form,reflecting greater increments in biomass compared to native *** having lower growth,the use of this native species in the rehabilitation of mining areas should be considered,mainly because it has good development and meets current government legislation as an opportunity to restore local biodiversity.

A Promising Strategy for the Treatment of Onychomycosis with Curcumin and Photodynamic Therapy

Onychomycosis is a disease of high incidence in the nail plate and responsible for approximately half of the cases of nail infections. Conventionally, dermatologists prescribe antibiotics and antifungals for long periods for its treatment. The high incidence of this type of infection and the increase of microbial strains resistant to the available drugs have justified the importance of the development of new technologies and treatments. This paper presents the photodynamic therapy as an alternative treatment of onychomycosis. New strategies for the use of curcumin as a photosensitizer and its therapeutic response were investigated in different formulations （gel and emulsion）. Photodynamic therapy is a promising technique by which microorganisms are eliminated by a photosensitizing compound, light and oxygen. It was evaluated in two patients who had developed lesions in the fmgernails caused by onychomycosis for approximately 10 years. The lesions were treated by photodynamic therapy with curcumin. The therapeutic efficacy was observed after a maximum of six photodynamic therapy sessions without any other adjuvant therapy. Curcumin has become more promising than the therapeutic standard as it is a natural and versatible drug for incorporation in different formulations, at low cost and low probability of side effects.
