Spatial and temporal patterns of forest fires in the Central Monte:relationships with regional climate

Background Natural and anthropogenic wildfires burn large areas of arid and semi-arid forests with significant socio-economic and environmental impacts. Fire regimes are controlled by climate, vegetation type, and anthropogenic factors such as ignition sources and human-induced disturbances. Projections of climate and land-use change suggest that these controlling factors will change, altering fire regimes in the near future. In the southern Central Monte, Mendoza, Argentina, the factors that modulate the fire temporal and spatial variability are poorly understood. We reconstructed the fire history of southeast of Mendoza from 1984 to 2023 and investigated the relationships between fire extent and climate variability at seasonal and interannual scales. Burned areas were determined using Google Earth Engine by processing Landsat 5-TM, Landsat 7-ETM+, and Landsat 8-OLI-TIRS sensor *** The region exhibited high spatial and temporal variability in fire occurrence, being a mosaic of areas with different fire histories and recovery times. Between 1985 and 2023, fire recurrence ranged from sites unburned to sites with up to 14 fires. The occurrence of large fires was strongly favored by a combination of a year with abundant spring–early summer precipitation, which favors fuel accumulation, followed by a year of low spring–early summer precipitation. Precipitation and burnt area showed a very pronounced 6–7 year cycle, suggesting a dominant climatic control on fire *** Fire distribution in southeastern Mendoza forests is not homogeneous, resulting in a mosaic of patches with different fire histories. This heterogeneity may be related to vegetation patterns and land use. The temporal variability of fires is strongly influenced by climate variability, which would promote fuel production and subsequent drying. Background:The retina has been used to study the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis(MS).Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer(pRNFL)thinning has been suggested as an ocular biomarker of neurodegeneration in *** goal of this project was to determine the birefringence of the pRNFL by measuring the fiber birefringence using polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography(PS-OCT).Methods:Sixty-six MS patients without history of optic neuritis(age:39.9±11.0 ***,53 females and 13 males)and 66 age-and gender-matched normal controls(age:40.7±11.4 ***)were *** built PS-OCT was used to measure phase retardation per unit depth(PR/UD,proportional to the birefringence)and pRNFL thickness in each quadrant of the *** addition,clinical manifestation was used to correlate with the pRNFL ***:The pRNFL was thinner in the temporal and inferior quadrants in MS patients compared with normal controls(P0.05).In MS patients,the PR/UD was not related to the expanded disability status scale(EDSS)nor disease duration(r ranged from−0.17 to 0.02,P>0.05).Conclusion:This is the first study using PS-OCT to study the pRNFL birefringence in MS *** birefringence of the pRNFL may indicate microtubule abnormality,and could be a potential biomarker for detecting early neurodegeneration in MS.

Food and Nutritional Insecurity before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Households of Women Belonging to a Social Program

Introduction: According to the National Health and Nutrition Survey, the Mexican households in 2018 had food insecurity at 55.5% while in 2012 it was 70%. Food insecurity is a global health problem and now with the COVID-19 pandemic, it has increased. Objective: To compare the levels of food and nutritional insecurity in women’s households from two Social Impulse Centers of the Secretary for Human Social Development (SEDESHU) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A comparative and cross-sectional study was carried out in 41 women participating in a nutritional intervention program in two social promotion centers. Food security was measured with the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale (ELCSA), comparing it in a period from January to April 2020: before and during the health contingency. Socio-economic and demographic variables were also measured, as well as access to water during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Food insecurity levels during the COVID-19 contingency were found to have increased by more than 60% (from 31.7% to 93%);the main risk factors associated with unemployment and access to healthy food. The COVID-19 contingency reflects impacts on households, but because women participated in the nutritional intervention program, it could influence by observing that, at least, the use of food was adequate since apparently food waste was minimal.

Coronavirus(COVID-19)has impacted nearly every person across the globe either in terms of losses of life or as of *** current coronavirus(COVID-19)pandemic is a rare/special situation where people can express their feelings on Internet-based social *** media is emerging as the biggest platform in recent years where people spend most of their time expressing themselves and their *** research is based on gathering data from Twitter and analyzing the behavior of the people during the COVID-19 *** research is based on the logic expressed by people in this perspective and emotions for the suffering of COVID-19 and *** this research,we have used a Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM)network model with Convolutional Neural Network using Keras python deep-learning library to determine whether social media platform users are depressed in terms of positive,negative,or neutral emotional out bust based on their Twitter *** results showed that the model has 88.14%accuracy(representation of the correct prediction over the test dataset)after 10 epochs which most tweets showed had neutral *** evaluation shows interesting results in positive(1),negative(–1),and neutral(0)emotions through different visualization.

The Phenols of the Genus <i>Agave</i>(Agavaceae)

A review is presented about the studies that have been carried out on the phenolic composition of the species of the genus Agave in order to show which species of the genus has been analyzed, what is the potential of the species of Agave as source of phenolics with important biological activities, and what is the significance of the phenolic profiles as chemotaxonomic markers in the genus. The results of the analysis of a dozen of Agave species reveal an important richness of phenolic compounds, including flavonoids, homoisoflavonoids, and phenolic acids, and a broad diversity of biological activities associated to those compounds, as antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antinematod, and immunomodulatory capabilities. The phenols of Agave also have a major potential as specific chemotaxonomic markers.

Role of double-balloon enteroscopy in malignant small bowel tumors

AIM: To assess the double-balloon enteroscopy(DBE) role in malignant small bowel tumors(MSBT).METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive study performed in a single center. All consecutive patients who underwent a DBE with final diagnosis of a malignant neoplasm from 2004 to 2014 in our referral center were included. Patient demographic and clinical pathological characteristics were recorded and reviewed. MSBT diagnosis was achieved either by DBE directed biopsy with multiple tissue sampling, endoscopic findings or histological analysis of surgical specimen. We have analyzed double-balloon enteroscopy impact in outcome and clinical course of these patients. RESULTS: Of 627 patients, 28(4.5%)(mean age = 60 ± 17.3 years) underwent 30 procedures(25 anterograde, 5 retrograde) and were diagnosed of a malignant tumor. Patients presented with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(n = 19, 67.9%), occlusion syndrome(n = 7, 25%) and diarrhea(n = 1, 3.6%). They were diagnosed by DBE biopsy(n = 18, 64.3%), histological analysis of surgical specimen(n = 7, 25%) and unequivocal endoscopic findings(n = 2, 7.1%). Gastrointestinal stromal tumor(n = 8, 28.6%), adenocarcinoma(n = 7, 25%), lymphoma(n = 4, 14.3%), neuroendocrine tumor(n = 4, 14.3%), metastatic(n = 3, 10.7%) and Kaposi sarcoma(n = 1, 3.6%) were identified. DBE modified outcome in 7 cases(25%), delaying or avoiding emergency surgery(n = 3), modifying surgery approach(n = 2) and indicating emergency SB partial resection instead of elective approach(n = 2).CONCLUSION: DBE may be critical in the management of MSBT providing additional information that may be decisive in the clinical course of these patients.
