Multiferroic bi-layer Fe/BaTiO3 （BTO） thin films were successfully deposited on Pt（200）/MgO（100） substrates using ion beam sputter deposition （1BSD）, and the mutiferroic properties were studied at room temperature. X-ray diffraction （XRD） analyses showed that BTO films were c-axis oriented and epitaxially grown on platinum coated MgO substrates, and （110） epitaxial Fe films were subsequently grown on （001） BTO films. Fe/BTO bi-layer films showed good ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties at room temperature and the multiferroic coupling was observed, which should be attributed to the hybridization of Fe and Ti occurring at the ferromagnetic-ferroelectric interface.

BACKGROUND Closed rupture of the little and ring finger flexor tendons caused by the hamate is mostly associated with a fracture or nonunion of the hamate *** one case of a closed rupture of the finger flexor tendon caused by osteochondroma in the hamate has been ***,we present a case study to highlight the possibility of hamate osteochondroma as a rare cause of finger closed flexor tendon rupture based on our clinical experience and literature *** SUMMARY A 48-year-old man who had been a rice-field farmer for 7–8 h a day for the past 30 years visited our clinic due to the loss of right little finger and ring finger flexion involving both the proximal and distal interphalangeal *** patient was diagnosed with a complete rupture of the ring and little finger flexors because of the hamate and was pathologically diagnosed with an *** surgery was performed,and a complete rupture of the ring and little finger flexors due to an osteophyte-like lesion of the hamate was observed,which was pathologically diagnosed as an *** One should consider that osteochondroma in the hamate may be the cause of closed tendon ruptures.

Changes in cellular isoflavone （daidzein and genistein） contents were monitored in root cultures of Albizzia kalkora （Roxb.） Prain after feeding different ratios of NH4^＋/NO3^- and treatment with a biotic elicitor （three strains of Rhizobium sp.）. The NH4^＋/NO3^- ratio appears to be positively correlated with daidzein content in the roots and shows a negative correlation with genistein. Among the three different strains of Rhizobium used, the strain ATCC 15834 caused a 35% increase in daidzein production by infection. In the case of genistein, maximum production （94%） was obtained when cultures were treated on Day 6 by the strains ATCC 15834 and KCTC 1541. The biosynthetic pathway of the two isoflavones apparently reacts differently to the same culture conditions and the same strains of Rhizobium. Therefore, the present data suggest that the production of daidzein and genistein could be modulated by changing the NH4^＋/NO3^- ratio and the application of Rhizobium.

KML001, an arsenic compound, as salvage chemotherapy in refractory biliary tract cancers: A prospective study

Background: Sodium meta-arsenite(NaAsO_2, KML001) is a potential oral anticancer agent acting on telomerase and telomere length. This prospective study evaluated its safety, tolerability, and effectiveness as salvage chemotherapy in patients with advanced biliary tract cancer(BTC) resistant to gemcitabinebased chemotherapy. Methods: Forty-four patients(21 women and 23 men) with advanced BTC and failure history of gemcitabine-based chemotherapy, performance status(PS) 0–2, normal cardiac, hepatic, and renal function were enrolled. Daily dose of KML001(7.5 mg. p.o.) was administered to eligible subjects for 24 weeks divided into six treatment cycles. Response was evaluated bimonthly using CT. Results: After an average of 1.5 months of treatment(range: 0.5–10.0), 3 patients(6.8%) obtained progression-free status, 23 patients(52.3%) had disease progression, and 18 patients(40.9%) dropped out before evaluation. One patient(2.3%) completed six treatment cycles without progression. During the treatment, morphine dosage kept the same or decreased in 20 patients(47.6%). Nine patients(20.5%) experienced grade-3 adverse events(AEs), while no patient experienced grade-4 AEs. The most common AEs were liver enzyme elevation(11/44, 25%) and anemia(10/44, 22.7%). KML001 was discontinued in six patients(13.6%) due to AEs, including liver toxicity( n = 3), QTc prolongation( n = 2), and abdominal pain( n = 1). Conclusions: KML001 did not have enough anticancer effect on patients with advanced BTC resistant to gemcitabine. However, KML001 was safe and well-tolerable in terms of AEs and pain control when used as salvage therapy. Further studies are needed to establish arsenic agents as a reliable treatment option in patients with BTC.

AIM:To investigate the efficacy and safety of transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)-based multimodal treatment in patients with large hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS:A total of 146 consecutive patients were included in the analysis,and their medical records and radiological data were reviewed ***:In total,119 patients received TACE-based multi-modal treatments,and the remaining 27 received conservative *** survival(Psignificantly better in the treatment group than in the conservative *** subgroup analysis,survival benefits were observed not only in the multi-modal treatment group compared with the TACE-only group(P=0.002)but also in the surgical treatment group compared with the loco-regional treatment-only group(Psis identified tumor stage(Psignificant pre-treatment prognostic factors,objective response(P<0.001),surgical treatment(P=0.009),and multi-modal treatment(P=0.002)were identified as independent post-treatment prognostic ***:TACE-based multi-modal treatments were safe and more beneficial than conservative *** surgery after successful downstaging resultedin long-term survival in patients with large,unresectable HCC.

The 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held in Pyeongchang, Korea, during February and March. We examined the near surface winds and wind gusts along the sloping surface at two outdoor venues in Pyeongchang during February and March using surface wind data. The outdoor venues are located in a complex, mountainous terrain, and hence the near-surface winds form intricate patterns due to the interplay between large-scale and locally forced winds. During February and March, the dominant wind at the ridge level is westerly; however, a significant wind direction change is ob- served along the sloping surface at the venues. The winds on the sloping surface are also influenced by thermal forcing, showing increased upslope flow during daytime. When neutral air flows over the hill, the windward and leeward flows show a significantly different behavior. A higher correlation of the wind speed between upper- and lower-level stations is shown in the windward region compared with the leeward region. The strong synoptic wind, small width of the ridge, and steep leeward ridge slope angle provide favorable conditions for flow separation at the leeward toot of the ridge. The gust factor increases with decreasing surface elevation and is larger during daytime than nighttime. A significantly large gust factor is also observed in the leeward region.

The distribution of small fractures and water content of the Fourcade glacier on King George Island, Antarctica, was investigated in November 2006 and December 2007 by two ground-based (470-and 490-m-long profiles) and one helicopter-borne (470-m-long profile) ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys using 50-, 100-, and 500-MHz antennas. Radar images in the pre-migrated GPR sections are characterized by a smooth ice surface and irregular bed topography, numerous diffraction hyperbolas in the ice and at the glacier bed, strong scattering noise, and near-surface folded layers. Scattering noise above a mound in the center of the profiles is associated with an area of dense fractures extending down from the ice surface that has relatively low reflection strength. Near the northeast ends of the profiles where few englacial fractures occur, scattering noise may result from the presence of warmer ice. A water-filled conduit and an air-filled cavity are interpreted as the source of two distinct hyperbolas in sub-glacial valleys based on the polarity of the reflections. Through migration velocity analysis on 106 hyperbolas, radar velocities were obtained for the 100-MHz ground-based profile. Using the velocities and Paren’s mixture formula, we calculated the water content of the ice to have been in the range of 0.00–0.09. High water content occurs near the glacier margin, in sub-glacial valleys, and in zones of scattering noise.
