In order to Isolate anti-human Immunodeflclency virus （HIV） agents from natural products, 97 ethanollc extracts of 90 fungi were tested for their Inhibitory activity on HIV-1. Most of the extracts tested were relatively non-toxic to human lymphocytic MT-4 cells, but extracts of some fungi exhibited potent antl-HIV activity In an in vitro 3-（4, 5-dlmethyl-2 thlazoyl）-2,5-dlphenyl-2H-tetrazollum bromide assay with a selectivity Index greater than 3. Most fungi were Isolated from Dendrobium sp. and Taxus sp.

Antitumor and antimicrobial activities of endophytic fungi from medicinal parts of Aquilaria sinensis

The purpose of this study was to isolate and characterize endophytic fungi from the stem tissue which can produce fragrant ingredients in Aquilaria sinensis(also called agarwood) to determine their antitumor and antimicrobial ***-eight fungal endophytes were isolated from agarwood by strict sterile sample preparation and were classified into 14 genera and 4 taxonomic classes(Sordariomycetes,Dothideomycetes,Saccharomycetes,and Zy-gomycetes) based on molecular *** the 28 isolates,13(46.4%) showed antimicrobial activity against at least one of the test strains by the agar well diffusion method,and 23 isolates(82.1%) displayed antitumor activity against at least one of five cancer cell lines by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT) *** diameters of inhibition zones of YNAS07,YNAS14,HNAS04,HNAS05,HNAS08,and HNAS11 were equal to or higher than 14.0 mm against Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli,Bacillus subtilis,***,Aspergillus fumigatus,and ***,*** inhibition rates of YNAS06,YNAS08,and HNAS06 were not less than 60% to 293-T,293-T,and SKVO3 cells,*** results suggest that the endophytic fungi associated with agarwood will provide us with not only useful micro-ecological information,but also potential antimicrobial and anti-tumor agents.

The effects of substrate composition and temperature on myceilal growth and sclerotium production in Grlfola umbellate （Pers.） Pilaet were Investigated In the present study. The Induction of sclerotla of G. umbellate was affected greatly by the type of medium, as well as the type of carbon source. Malt-extract agar was able to induce the production of sclerotia. The production of sclerotia was also observed when the carbon source in the GPC agar medium （glucose 20 g/L, peptone 6 g/L, corn steep liquor 10 g/L, and agar 15 g/L） was replaced with glycerol or mannitol. Altering the composition of the GPC medium with milk powder, thiamine hydrochlorlde, extract of Armlllarla mellea, active clay, dlatomite, kaolin, or arginlne did not induce the production of sclerotla. A temperature range of 18-25 ℃ was suitable for both mycellai growth and sclerotium formation. Glycerol significantly Induced slerotium formation on nutrient supplemented with sawdust substrates In bottle culture. 24S-Polyporusterone A and polyporusterone B were assayed In samples of natural and cultured sclerotla. Both natural and cultured sclerotla contained 24S- polyporusterone A and polyporusterone B.

Anoectochilus formosanus,commonly known as "Jewel Orchid",is a Chinese folk medicine used to treat hypertension,diabetes,and heart *** existence of *** is currently threatened by habitat loss,human and animal consumption,*** highly potent medicinal activity of *** is due to its secondary metabolites,especially kinsenosides and *** orchid also has a unique mycorrhizal *** adult orchids rely on endophytes for mineral nutrition and have complex interactions with them,which are related to plant growth,yield and changes in secondary *** study investigated the promoting role of F-23 fungus (genus Mycena) on the biomass and contents of kinsenosides and flavonoids of *** in pot *** following were observed after 10 weeks of symbiotic cultivation:increased shoot height,shoot dry weight,and leaf numbers by 16.6%,31.3%,and 22.5%,respectively;increased contents of kinsenosides,isorhamnetin-3-O-β-D-rutinoside,and isorhamnetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside by 85.5%,226.1%,and 196.0%,respectively;some hyphae in epidermal cells dyed red and/or reddish brown by safranine;and,significantly reduced number of starch grains in cortical ***,F-23 fungus significantly improved the kinsenoside and flavonoid contents of *** findings supported the reports that endophytes can alter the production of secondary metabolites in their plant hosts,although further physiological,genetic and ecological analyses are warranted.

Eight compounds were isolated from the ethyl acetate- and n-butanol-soluble fractions of the ethanollc extract of the whole plant of Anoectochllus roxburghll（Wali.） Lindi. （Orchidaceee）. On the basis of spectroscopic methods, the structures of these compounds were elucidated as quercetin-7-O-β-D-[6＂-O-（trans-feruloyi）]- giucopyranosids （compound 1）, 8-C-p-HydroxybenzyiquerceUn （compound 2）, isorhamnetin-7-O-β-D- giucopyranoside （compound 3）, isorhamnetin-3-O-β-D-giucopyranoside （compound 4）, kaempferoi-3-O-β-D- giucopyranoside （compound 5）, kaempferoi-7-O-β-D-giucopyranoside （compound 6）, 5-hydroxy-3＇,4＇,7- trimethoxyfiavonoi-3-O-β-D-rutinoside （compound 7）, and isorhamnetin-3-O-β-D-rutinoside （compound 8）. Of the compounds isoisted, compound 1 was a new flavonoid giucoside and exhibited strong scavenging activity against the 1,1-diphenyi-2-picryihydrazyi free radical, whereas the ethanolic extract showed weak activity. Compounds 2-8 were obtained from this family for the first time.

Santalum album Linn. is an evergreen and hemi-parasitic tree, the heartwood-sandalwood of which was used during a long history in traditional Chinese medicine. Kuhnia rosmarinifolia Vent. is a good host for 1- or 2-year-old growing S. album. The interaction between S. album and K. rosmarinifolia is still little known. Many studies have been carried out on a number of plants for identification and diversity of endophytes. In this study, in total 25 taxa of endophytic fungi were isolated from the roots of S. album and the roots of K. rosmarinifolia. The most frequently isolated genera were Penicillium sp. 1 and Fusarium sp. 1 in the roots of S. album and K. rosmadnifolia, respectively. S. album is a root parasite of K. rosmarinifolia. The interesting result is that they apparently do not share the same endophytic fungi isolates. This study for the first time explored the content of endophytic fungi from S. album and K. rosmarinifolia, which provides important information for further studies.

Polyporus umbellatus（*** umbellata）is a sclerotium forming mushroom belongs to family Polyporaceae of Polyphorales,*** sclerotia of *** have long been used for traditional medicines in China,Korea and *** study was initiated to obtain the basic data for artificial sclerotial production of *** for a preliminary experiment,we found the favorable conditions for mycelial growth of *** and its symbiotic fungus Armillaria *** optimal conditions for mycelial growth of *** were 20℃and pH 4,while the conditions for mycelial growth of *** were 25℃and pH *** carbon sources for optimal mycelial growth of *** were fructose and glucose,while carbon sources for favorable mycelial growth of *** were also fructose and *** nitrogen sources for favorable mycelial growth *** were peptone and yeast extract,while optimal mycelial growth of *** were obtained in peptone and yeast *** the observation of symbiotic relation between *** and Armillaria *** tested five species and sixteen strains of *** the species of Armillaria,*** 741 and *** 134 were vigorous in their mycelia growth,whereas *** 4939 and *** 4857 were least affect on mycelia *** culture of both fungi on complete medium showed a good growth of mycelia and forming thicker mycelia layer at contact surface of both *** good growth species were ***186,***4585,*** 741,*** 2620,*** 42574 and *** 43894 *** those species Armillaria mellea 4585 was selected and test on woodchip *** was colonized well over the mycelia of *** to form symbiotic *** were some sign of pseudosclerotia formation in bottle culture type as time *** can finally concluded and expect to have small shape of pseudo type sclerotia in vitro condition.
