Barium to calcium （Ba/Ca） ratio in corals has been considered as a useful geochemical proxy for upwelling,river flood and other oceanic ***,recent studies indicated that additional environmental or biological factors can influence the incorporation of Ba into coral *** this study,Ba/Ca ratios of two Porites corals collected from Daya Bay,northern South China Sea were ***/Ca signals in the two corals were ‘anomalous’ in comparison with Ba behaviors seen in other near-shore corals influenced by upwelling or riverine *** Ba/Ca profiles displayed similar and remarkable patterns characterized by low and randomly fluctuating background signals periodically interrupted by sharp and large synchronous peaks,clearly indicating an environmental *** analysis indicated that the Ba/Ca profiles were not correlated with previously claimed environmental factors such as precipitation,coastal upwelling,anthropogenic activities or phytoplankton blooms in other *** maxima of Ba/Ca appeared to occur in the period of Sr/Ca maxima,coinciding with the winter minimum temperatures,which suggests that the anomalous high Ba/Ca signals were related to winter-time low sea surface *** speculated that the Ba/Ca peaks in corals of the Daya Bay were most likely the results of enrichment of Ba-rich particles in their skeletons when coral polyps retracted under the stresses of anomalous winter low *** this case,Ba/Ca ratio in relatively high-latitude corals can be a potential proxy for tracing the low temperature stress.

The essential oils of the flower-buds, leaves and stems of Filipendula palmata（ Pall. ） Maxim. were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Thirty-three, forty-seven and forty-seven compounds in the flower-buds, leaves and stems were identified, respectively. Methyl salicylate exists in a great amount which is up to 70. 10% in the flower-buds. Its amount is also high in other two parts. The data obtained show that it may be one of the main natural mosquito-expelling and pain-alleviating components in the three parts. The flower-buds are the main active part with the mosquito-expelling function.

The basic premise of high yield in rice is to improve leaf photosynthetic efficiency and coordinate the sourcesink relationship in rice plants. Quantitative trait loci （QTLs） related to morphological traits and chlorophyll content of rice leaves were detected at the stages of heading to maturity, and a major QTL （qLSCHL4） related to flag leaf shape and chlorophyll content was detected at both stages in recombinant inbred lines constructed using the indica rice cultivar 93-11 and the japonica rice cultivar Nipponbare. Map-based cloning and expression analysis showed that LSCHL4 is allelic to NAL1, a gene previously reported in narrow leaf mutant of rice. Overexpression lines transformed with vector carrying LSCHL4 from Nipponbare and a near-isogenic line of 93-11 （NIL-9311） had significantly increased leaf chlorophyll content, enlarged flag leaf size, and improved panicle type. The average yield of NIL-9311 was 18.70% higher than that of 93-11. These results indicate that LSCHL4 had a pleiotropic function. Exploring and pyramiding more high-yield alleles resem- bling LSCHL4 for super rice breeding provides an effective way to achieve new breakthroughs in raising rice yield and generate new ideas for solving the problem of global food safety.

BACKGROUND: Excessive alcohol consumption can result in multiple organ injury, of which alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is the most common. With economic development and improvement of living standards, the incidence of diseases caused by alcohol abuse has been increasing in China, although its pathogenesis remains obscure. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of hypoxia in chronic ALD. METHODS: Twenty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into a control group (n=12) with a normal history and an experimental group (n=16) fed with 10 ml/ kg of 56% (vol/vol) ethanol once per day by gastric lavage for 24 weeks. At 24 weeks, blood samples were collected and then the rats were killed. liver samples were frozen at -80 ℃ and used for RT-PCR; other liver samples were obtained for immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: When the period of alcohol consumption increased, the positive rate of expression of hypoxia- inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) mRNA was more significantly elevated in the liver of the alcohol group than in the control group (P≤0.05). The HIF-1α protein located in the cytoplasm was seldom expressed in the control group, but significantly in the alcohol group (P≤0.01). CONCLUSION: HIF-1α mRNA expression was activated by ethanol-induced injury in this study, suggesting that hypoxia is involved in the underlying mechanism of ALD.

In search of environmentally benign insecticides with high activity, low toxicity and low resistance, a series of novel anthranilic（isophthalic） acid esters was designed and synthesized based on the structure of ryanodine modulating agent. All the compounds were characterized by 1H NMR spectra, elemental analysis or high resolution mass spectrometry（HRMS）. The preliminary results of biological activity assessment indicate that some of the title compounds exhibit certain but unremarkable insecticidal activity against Mythimna separata Walker at 200 mg/L and fungicidal activities against five funguses at 50 mg/L.

To determine cancer pathway activities in nine types of primary tumors and NCI60 cell lines, we applied an in silico approach by examining gene signatures reflective of consequent pathway activation using gene expression data. Supervised learning approaches predicted that the Ras pathway is active in -70% of lung adenocarcinomas but inactive in most squamous cell carcinomas, pulmonary carcinoids, and small cell lung carcinomas. In contrast, the TGF-β, TNF-α, Src, Myc, E2F3, and β-catenin pathways are inactive in lung adenocarcinomas. We predicted an active Ras, Myc, Src, and/or E2F3 pathway in significant percentages of breast cancer, colorectal carcinoma, and gliomas. Our results also suggest that Ras may be the most prevailing oncogenic pathway. Additionally, many NCI60 cell lines exhibited a gene signature indicative of an active Ras, Myc, and/or Src, but not E2F3, β-catenin, TNF-α, or TGF-β pathway. To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive survey of cancer pathway activities in nine major tumor types and the most widely used NCI60 cell lines. The ＂gene expression pathway signatures＂ we have defined could facilitate the understanding of molecular mechanisms in cancer development and provide guidance to the selection of appropriate cell lines for cancer research and pharmaceutical compound screening.

The efficiency of lithium-carbon dioxide （li–CO2） batteries is limited by the sluggish generation/decomposition kinetics of the discharge products （i.e.,li2CO3and carbon） despite the use of state-of-the-art noble metal （NM） ***2C2O4has emerged as a promising alternative product;however,the thermodynamic instability of li2C2O4causes it to generally appear as an intermediate in li2CO3pathways rather than a product during ***,using comprehensive first-principles calculations,we report tailoring the discharge products of li–CO2batteries to li2C2O4via single-atom alloy （SAA） engineering,in which NM-doped copper SAAs （NM1Cu） are constructed for *** NM1Cu catalysts display a free-atom-like narrow d-band state and unique charge distribution over the solute NM1atom and the surrounding matrix Cu *** an optimized electronic structure is substantial in Ru1Cu and Ir1Cu,which is conducive to the co-activation and coupling of *** lithiation of*CO2intermediate that breaks the charge symmetry of the central C species can further reduce the kinetic barriers of the C–C *** advantages promote li2C2O4generation on Ru1Cu and Ir1Cu while suppress its subsequent ***,they exhibit low theoretical overpotentials and enable facile delithiation under normal charging *** work proposes a universal principle of manipulating electronic structures to achieve li2C2O4product,which provides practical guidance for the development of li–CO2batteries.
