Retinoblastoma binding protein 4 up-regulation is correlated with hepatic metastasis and poor prognosis in colon cancer patients

Background: Retinoblastoma binding protein 4 (RBBP4) plays an essential role in the development of multiple cancers. However, its relationship with prognosis in colon cancer and colon cancer hepatic metastasis has not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between RBBP4 expression and prognosis of colon cancer patients and to evaluate RBBP4 as a new prognostic marker in these patients. Methods: Eighty colon cancer patients underwent surgical resection of the colon were enrolled. Among them, forty colon cancer patients suffered with hepatic metastasis. The colon cancer tissues, para-colon cancer tissues, and hepatic metastatic cancer tissues were collected from the pathological department for further analysis. The expression of RBBP4 proteins was examined by immunohistochemistry and correlated with clinicopathological parameters. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was used to validate the expression and explore its relationship with clinical characteristics. Results: RBBP4 was up-regulated in the colon cancer tissues compared with the para-colon cancer tissues. The analysis of TCGA database verified the upregulation of RBBP4 in the colon cancer tissues and RBBP4 overexpression was correlated with nerve invasion and poor outcomes of chemotherapy. Moreover, the positive rate of RBBP4 expression in 40 colon cancer patients with hepatic metastasis was higher in the hepatic metastatic cancer tissues (39/40, 97.5%) than in the colon cancer tissues (26/40, 65.0%). Our clinicopathological analysis showed that RBBP4 expression was significantly correlated with vascular invasion, hepatic metastasis, and lymph node involvement (all P < 0.05). Additionally, the survival analysis demonstrated that RBBP4 over-expression was correlated with poor prognosis. Conclusions: RBBP4 was upregulated in the colon cancer. RBBP4 may be a novel predictor for poor prognosis of colon cancer and colon cancer hepatic metastasis.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of the most common malignancies in the world. Gut microbiota has been demonstrated to play a critical role in liver inflammation, chronic fibrosis, liver cirrhosis, and HCC development through the gut-liver axis. Data sources: Recently there have been several innovative studies investigating gut microbial dysbiosismediated enhancement of HCC through the gut-liver axis. Literatures from January 1998 to January 2018 were searched in the Pub Med database using the keywords "gut microbiota" and "hepatocellular carcinoma" or "liver cancer", and the results of experimental and clinical studies were analyzed. Results: Gut microbial dysbiosis accompanies the progression of alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and liver cirrhosis, and promotes HCC progression in an experimental mouse model. The immune system and key factors such as Toll-like receptor 4 are involved in the process. There is evidence for gut microbial dysbiosis in hepatitis virus-related HCC patients. Conclusions: Gut microbial dysbiosis is closely associated with hepatic inflammation disease and HCC through the gut-liver axis. With the enhanced understanding of the interactions between gut microbiota and liver through the gut-liver axis, new treatment strategies for HCC are being developed.

BACKGROUND: Pancreas transplantation is the only established treatment to achieve long-term normoglycemia and insulin independence in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. However, many complications both during and post-transplantation have limited the progress of pancreas transplantation. Mice are the widely used laboratory animals that have been used to establish pancreas transplant models. The pathogenesis and the treatment of pancreas allograft rejection have been studied during the last twenty years. This review introduces four different mouse pancreas transplantation models established by different centers. DATA SOURCES: We reviewed the three mostly reported mouse pancreas transplantation models in the literature (Pub Med), and compared them with a novel mouse model established at our center. RESULTS: In this review, four different models of mouse pancreas transplantation were compared in terms of surgical technique, immediate success rate, advantages and disadvantages. CONCLUSIONS: The mouse model is a useful tool to study pancreas transplantation-related diseases and their treatment. The findings from this model help to improve human pancreas transplantation in the future. (Hepatobilinty Pancreat Dis Int 2010; 9:254-258)

Effect of alkali metal ions on the formation mechanism of HCN during pyridine pyrolysis

The catalytic effects of alkali metal ions(Na^(+)and K^(+))on NO_(x)precursor formation during coal pyrolysis were investigated using the N-containing compound pyridine as a model *** functional theory calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)level of theory were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of pyridine pyrolysis and the pathways for HCN *** calculation results indicate that Na^(+)and K^(+)have distinct influences on different pyrolysis reactions;these alkali metal ions facilitate the initial hydrogen transfer from C_(1)to N and C_(2),whereas they hinder the other hydrogen migration *** Na^(+)and K^(+)significantly reduce the activation energies for C–C bond breakage and triple-bond formation,whereas they increase the activation energies for the isomerization *** different effects essentially result from the distinct charge distributions induced by the two *** to the distinct influences on the different reactions,the rate-determining steps are modulated,affecting the competitiveness of the different possible pathways of HCN *** formation of HCN from pyridine is promoted in the presence of Na^(+)and K^(+)because all the overall activation energies are decreased for different *** calculation results agree well with previous experimental ***,the findings offer a new and promising approach to reveal the formation mechanism of NO_(x)and facilitate the control of NO_(x)for coal utilization.

Experimental investigation for temperature and emissivity by flame emission spectrum in a cavity of rocket based combined cycle combustor chamber

Flame temperature and spectral emissivity were the important parameters characterizing the sufficient degree of fuel combustion and the particle radiative characteristics in the Rocket Based Combined Cycle(RBCC)*** investigate the combustion characteristics of the complex supersonic flame in the RBCC combustor,a new radiation thermometry combined with Levenberg-Marquardt(LM)algorithm and the least squares method was proposed to measure the temperature,emissivity and spectral radiative properties based on the flame emission ***-situ measurements of the flame temperature,emissivity and spectral radiative properties were carried out in the RBCC direct-connected test bench with laser-induced plasma combustion enhancement(LIPCE)and without *** flame average temperatures at fuel global equivalence ratio(a)of 1.0b and 0.6 with LIPCE were 4.51%and 2.08%higher than those without *** flame combustion oscillation of kerosene tended to be stable in the recirculation zone of cavity with the thermal and chemical effects of laser induced *** differences of flame temperature at a=1.0b and 0.6 were 503 K and 523 K with LIPCE,which were 20.07%and42.64%lower than those without *** flame emissivity with methane assisted ignition was 80.46%lower than that without methane assisted ignition,due to the carbon-hydrogen ratio of kerosene was higher than that of *** spectral emissivities at 600 nm with LIPCE were 1.25%,22.2%,and 4.22%lower than those without LIPCE at a=1.0a(with methane assisted ignition),1.0b(without methane assisted ignition)and *** effect of concentration in the emissivity was removed by normalization to analyze the flame radiative properties in the RBCC combustor *** maximum differences of flame normalized emissivity were 50.91%without LIPCE and 27.53%with *** flame radiative properties were stabilized under the thermal and chemical effects of laser induced plasma at a=0.6.

Stochastic resonance (SR)-like and resonance suppression (RS)-like phenomena in a time-delayed bistable system driven by additive white noise are investigated by means of stochastic simulations of the power spectrum,the quality factor of the power spectrum,and the mean first-passage time (MFPT) of the *** cal culative results indicate that:(i) as the system is driven by a small periodic signal,the quality factor as a function delay time exhibits a maximal value at smaller noise intensities,i.e.,an SR-like *** the increment in additive noise inteusity,the extremum gradually disappears and the quality factor decreases monotonously with delay time.(ii) As the additive noise intensity is smaller,the curve of the MFPT with respect to delay time displays a peak,i.e.,an RS-like *** higher levels of noise,however,the non-monotonic behavior is lost.

The present meta-analysis was conducted to compare the clinical effect and patient experience of laparoendoscopic single-site varicocelectomy （LESSV） and conventional laparoscopic varicocelectomy. The candidate studies were included after literature search of database Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE. Related information on essential data and outcome measures was extracted from the eligible studies by two independent authors, and a meta-analysis was conducted using STATA 12.0 software. Subgroup analyses were conducted by study design （RCT and non-RCT）. The odds ratio （OR） or standardized mean difference （SMD） and their 95% confidence intervals （95% CIs） were used to estimate the outcome measures. Seven articles were included in our meta-analysis. The results indicated that patient who had undergone LESSV had a shorter duration of back to work （overall： SMD = -1.454, 95% Ch -2.502m0.405, P= 0.007; non-RCT： SMD = -2.906, 95% Ch -3.796-2.017, P= 0.000; and RCT： SMD = -0.841, 95% Ch -1.393-0.289, P = 0.003） and less pain experience at 3 h or 6 h （SMD = -0.447, 95% Ch -0.754-0.139, P = 0.004）, day 1 （SMD = -0.477, 95% Ch -0.905-0.05, P = 0.029）, and day 2 （SMD = -0.612, 95% Ch -1.099-0.125, P= 0.014） postoperatively based on RCT studies. However, the meta-analyses based on operation time, clinical effect （improvement of semen quality and scrotal pain relief）, and complications （hydrocele and recurrence） yielded nonsignificant results. In conclusion, LESSV had a rapid recovery and less pain experience over conventional laparoscopic varicocelectomy. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two varicocelectomy techniques in terms of the clinical effect and the incidence of hydrocele and varicocele recurrence. More high-quality studies are warranted for a comprehensive conclusion.
