AIM: To investigate the anti-neoplastic effects of MK615, an extract from the Japanese apricot (Prunus mume), against colon cancer cells. METHODS: Three colon cancer cell lines, SW480, COLO, and WiDr, were cultured with MK615. Growth inhibition was evaluated by cell proliferation assay and killing activity was determined by lactate dehydrogenase assay. Induction of apoptosis was evaluated by annexin Ⅴ flow cytometry. Morphological changes were studied by light and electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence staining with Atg8. RESULTS: MK615 inhibited growth and lysed SW480, COLO and WiDr cells in a dose-dependent manner. Annexin Ⅴ flow cytometry showed that MK615 induced apoptosis after 6 h incubation, at which point the occurrence of apoptotic cells was 68.0%, 65.7% and 64.7% for SW480, COLO, and WiDr cells, respectively. Light and electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence staining with Atg8 revealed that MK615 induced massive cytoplasmic vacuoles (autophagosomes) in all three cell lines. CONCLUSION: MK615 has an anti-neoplastic effect against colon cancer cells. The effect may be exerted by induction of apoptosis and autophagy.

Gastrectomy for patients with gastric cancer and non-uremic renal failure

AIM： To investigate the safety and outcome of gastrectomy for patients with gastric cancer and nonuremic renal failure （NURF）.METHODS： One hundred forty-seven patients who underwent gastrectomy for carcinoma were retrospectively divided into two groups： a group with Ccr values of ≥ 50 mL/min （Group 1, n = 110）, and one with Ccr values of ≥ 20 to 〈 50 mL/min （Group 2, n = 37）. Preoperative patient characteristics, intraoperative parameters （including operation time and blood loss）, and postoperative management and complications were evaluated.RESULTS： There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in operation time （297.9 rnin vs 272.6 rnin, P = 0.137） or blood loss （435 rnL vs 428 rnL, P = 0.078）. The differences in postoperative complications and hospital stay between the groups were not statistically significant. None of the patients in Group 2 required dialysis therapy, and no patients died due to gastrectorny or gastrectorny-related causes. The overall 4-year survival rates in Groups 1 and 2 were 86.6% and 81.8%, respectively （P = 0.48）, and the corresponding 4-year disease-free survival rates for stage I, I, and Ⅲ patients were 88.7% and 83.5%, respectively （P = 0.65）.CONCLUSION： Gastrectomy can be performed as safely in patients with NURF similar to patients with normal renal function.

AIM:To compare creatinine clearance(Ccr) with estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR) in preoperative renal function tests in patients undergoing ***:The records of 197 patients undergoing hepatectomy between August 2006 and August 2008 were studied,and preoperative Ccr,a three-variable equation for eGFR(eGFR3) and a five-variable equation for eGFR(eGFR5) were *** values were defined as Ccr < 50 mL/min,eGFR3 and eGFR5 < 60 mL/min per 1.73 *** maximum increases in the postoperative serum creatinine(post Cr) level and postoperative rate of increase in the serum Cr level(post Cr rate) were ***:There were 37 patients(18.8%) with abnormal Ccr,31(15.7%) with abnormal eGFR3,and 40(20.3%) with abnormal *** there were no significant differences in the post Cr rate between patients with normal and abnormal Ccr,eGFR3 and eGFR5 values,the post Cr level was significantly higher in patients with eGFR3 and eGFR5 abnormality than in normal patients(P < 0.0001).Post Cr level tended to be higher in patients with Ccr abnormality(P = 0.0936 and P = 0.0875,respectively).CONCLUSION:eGFR5 and the simpler eGFR3,rather than Ccr,are recommended as a preoperative renal function test in patients undergoing hepatectomy.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), the fifth most common cancer in the world, shows increasing incidence worldwide. Curative treatments such as hepatectomy,liver transplantation, and radiofrequency ablation are applied in only 30%-60% of cases. Most remaining patients receive transarterial chemoembolization(TACE).Patients with intermediate-stage HCCs are regarded as good candidates for TACE. However, the intermediate stage includes non-homogeneous patients. Brassinosteroids （BRs） play essential roles in regulating various aspects of plant growth and development and in responding to diverse environmental cues, and their metabolism is an important way to regulate their homeosta-sis in plants. Here, we identified a dominant mutant, dwarf and round leaf-1 （drll-D）, which exhibits weak BR-deficient or BR-insensitive mutant phenotypes, including short and round leaves, prolonged senescence, dwarfed shape, and altered expression levels of the BR-responsive genes. Hypocotyl length and root inhibition assays suggest that the drll-D mutant responds to BRs normally, but has decreased BR signaling outputs. The endogenous levels of several BRs, includ-ing typhasterol （TY）, 6-deoxotyphasterol （6-deoxoTY）, and 6-deoxocastasterone （6-deoxoCS）, are significantly lower in the drll-D mutant than in the wild-type. The DRL1 gene encodes an acyltransferase and is widely expressed in leaves, roots, flowers, and siliques. Plants without DRL1 and its homologs are larger with an enhanced BR signaling. The expres-sion of DRL1 was induced by eBL and inhibited by ABA. DRL1 is involved in the BR metabolism likely by catalyzing the BR conjugation through esterification, which plays important roles in regulating the BR homeostasis and responding to abiotic stresses in Arabidopsis.

The application of remote sensing in understanding tree species structural diversity and land use patterns relationship is imperative for reforestation and biodiversity conservation efforts. This study assesses land use patterns and tree species structural diversity in previously reforested hilly sandstone regions of northern Togo. The physical height, and diameter at breast height(DBH) more than 5 cm of all tree species in each given plot were measured in summer 2017. A total of 75 plots of 900 m^2 installed along the toposequence were recorded. In addition, a semi-supervised classification of Landsat 8 images in January of 2018, was also used to classify the land use patterns. 36 tree species and 19 families were recorded for the entire study area. Meanwhile, 19 tree species and 15 families were recorded for the previously afforested zones. The most abundant species included the Sterculiaceae, Zygophyllaceae, Meliaceae, and Mimosaceae. The trees stand structure represented 8.61 ± 0.57 m, 11.28 ± 1.76 cm, and 0.018 ± 0.009 m^2 per hectare for height, diameter and basal area respectively. Major land use patterns were tree and shrub savannahs, parklands and croplands which represented over 60% of the landscape. It is necessary to examine the regeneration and vegetative multiplication potentials of the most frequent and abundant tree species for any eventual future afforestation programs in these hilly sandstone regions of northern Togo.

Genetic Background Influences Brassinosteroid-Related Mutant Phenotypes in Rice

In two cases, mutations in the same brassinosteroid-related genes caused different phenotypes in japonica varieties Nipponbare and Taichung 65. The mutant phenotypes were less severe in the Taichung 65 background than in the Nipponbare background. Three newly isolated brassinosteroid-insensitive mutants (d61-1N, d61-11, and d61-12) derived from a Nipponbare mutant library were found to be alleles of d61, which represent defects in the OsBRI1 gene. Although the Nipponbare-derived mutant d61-1N had the same nucleotide substitution as the previously characterized Taichung 65-derived mutant d61-1T, these two mutants showed different phenotypes for plant stature, internode elongation pattern, and seed shape;in each case, d61-1N (in the Nipponbare genetic background) had the more severe mutant phenotype. Similar trends were seen for phenotypes caused by mutants of d2, a brassinosteroid biosynthesis gene. Consistent with these phenotypes, the expression of brassinosteroid-responsive genes was lower in the Nipponbare-derived mutants. These results can be explained by our findings that feed-forward up-regulation of OsBRI1 did not occur in the Nipponbare-derived mutants and that an mPing transposon is inserted into the promoter region of Nipponbare OsBRI1. Based on these results, we conclude that the expression of OsBRI1, especially its feed-forward up-regulation, is misregulated in wild-type Nipponbare and in brassinosteroid-related mutants in a Nipponbare genetic background. Although Nipponbare is a model rice genotype, it can be categorized as an OsBRI1 mutant that has reduced sensitivity to brassinosteroid.

Effects of Ecological Restoration of Mangrove Wetlands Using Native Mangrove Species to Replace Spartina alterniflora: A Case Study in Southern China

Within the expanse of China’s coastline, the invasive alien cordgrass species Spartina alterniflora has caused profound nationwide damage and has emerged as a critical factor contributing to the degradation of mangrove wetlands, especially in the study area in Beihai, Guangxi. However, current treatments for S. alterniflora remain less effective and limited research focuses on the preliminary changes after artificial plantation. A comprehensive approach combining physical interventions with biological control measures has been employed to eradicate smooth cordgrass and facilitate the restoration of native mangrove wetlands. The study involved the periodic monitoring of the growth conditions of mangroves and the biodiversity of avian and benthic organisms, conducted at three to four-month intervals following the artificial plantation with one-year-old seedlings and propagules of native mangrove species Rhizophora stylosa. Results indicated that through the allometric equation, the above-ground biomass of planted seedlings had a ~20 g increase in average but the growth conditions were not significant over an eight-month period. High percentage of important avian species underlined the potential of the study site to serve as a worthwhile habitat and notable seasonal variations were observed in the biodiversity of bird species. Biodiversity indices of bird and benthos species also followed a similar fluctuation and reached a peak in April 2023. This research underscores the initial lack of distinct improvements during the early stages of the ecological restoration project, thorough maintenance, long-term monitoring, holistic considerations on a larger scale would be imperative for ongoing projects in the future.
