Macrophage colony-stimulating factor expressed in non-cancer tissues provides predictive powers for recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM To investigate the role of macrophage colony-stimulating factor(M-CSF) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) after surgery. METHODS Expression of M-CSF, distribution of M2 macrophages(Mφs), and angiogenesis were assessed in the liver, including tumors and peritumoral liver tissues. The prognostic power of these factors was assessed. Mouse isolated hepatic Mφs or monocytes were cultured with media containing M-CSF. The concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in media was assessed. Furthermore, the role of the M-CSF-matured hepatic Mφs on proliferation of the vascular endothelial cell(VEC) was investigated. RESULTS A strong correlation between the expressions of M-CSF and CD163 was observed in the peritumoral area. Also, groups with high density of M-CSF, CD163 or CD31 showed a significantly shorter time to recurrence(TTR) than low density groups. Multivariate analysis revealedthe expression of M-CSF or hepatic M2Mφs in the peritumoral area as the most crucial factor responsible for shorter TTR. Moreover, the expression of M-CSF and hepatic M2Mφs in the peritumoral area had better predictable power of overall survival. Values of VEGF in culture media were significantly greater in the hepatic Mφs compared with the monocytes. Proliferation of the VEC was greatest in the cells co-cultured with hepatic Mφs when M-CSF was present in *** M-CSF increases hepatocarcinogenesis, most likely by enhancing an angiogenic factor derived from hepatic Mφ and could be a useful target for therapy against HCC.

miR-122-5p as a novel biomarker for alpha-fetoproteinproducing gastric cancer

Symptomatic COVID-19 in University Students: A School-Wide Web-Based Questionnaire Survey during the Omicron Variant Outbreak

Aim: To detect risk and preventive factors associated with the Omicron variant infection in university students, a combination of a web-based survey and multivariate logistic regression analysis was introduced as the front-line initiatives by the school health practitioners. Design: Questionnaire survey. Methods: The school-wide web-based questionnaire survey was conducted among our university students as a part of the annual health check-up in April, 2023. The positive outcome was confined to the first symptomatic COVID-19 onset during the Omicron variant outbreak. Results: In this self-administered survey, risk or protective associations were merely estimated statistically in university students (n = 5406). In measured factors, karaoke and club/group activities could maintain the statistical significance in adjusted odds ratios (ORs) as relative risk factors, and science course, measles/ rubella (MR) vaccination, and COVID-19 vaccination remained as relative protective factors in adjusted OR analyses. Club/group activities with member gathering and karaoke sing-along sessions in university students may frequently have WHO’s three Cs. These risk factors are still important topics for the infection control of COVID-19 in university students. Together with some recent reports from other researchers, the significant protective role of MR vaccine in our survey warrants further clinical investigation. If the breakthrough infection continuously constitutes the majority of infection, real data in test-negative case-control or web-based questionnaire design continue to be important for statistical analysis to determine the minimal requirement of our strategies which may be equivalent to or replace COVID-19 vaccines.

Determination of Bed Void Fraction from Fixed Bed Breakthrough Curve

Accurate physical and chemical properties of adsorbents are required for the efficient design of fixed bed adsorbers. The bed void and particle void are significant physical properties. One of the experimentally determination technique for the bed void is a breakthrough curve method. In the present paper, experimental conditions for determining the bed void from breakthrough curve were investigated because complex conditions are required. The values of bed void were determined from theoretical elution curve at the point of c/c0 = 0.5 under the condition of negligible amount adsorbed. The bed void value determined from elution curve was clearly affected by particle void and fluid velocity, and regarded as "apparent" bed void values. For large porosity particles, it was difficult to determine the true bed void value due to the effect of penetration into macro pores. Then, the bed void fraction can be determined safely from breakthrough curve when particles possessing small particle void are used.
