Degradation of 1,4-Dioxane Using Ozone Oxidation with.UV Irradiation （Ozone/UV） Treatment

A meth.d for oxidative degradation of 1,4-dioxane （1,4-D） in waste water using a combination of ozone oxidation with.UV irradiation （ozone/UV） treatment was investigated. Th. results sh.wed th.t 1,4-D was degraded by ozone/UV treatment up to 90 min. Th. optimum concentration for th. injected ozone gas was about 40 g·m^3 under a constant level of UV irradiation. Furth.rmore, solid ph.se extraction and GC-MS analysis sh.wed no specific or reproducible peaks due to by-products of 1,4-D. It was th.refore concluded th.t 1,4-D was completely degraded by ozone/UV treatment. In contrast, th. amount of 1,4-D remaining decreased slowly in th. presence of h.Of or CI. It was suggested th.t th. degradation of 1,4-D, wh.ch.results from .Oh.oxidation, was retarded by th. presence of h.O3 or CI, wh.ch.act as radical scavengers.

Th.re are many earth.uakes in Japan. If a large earth.uake were to occur, it is necessary to consider h.w pipelines such.as: gas, sewage, telecommunications, and so on are restored quickly. At th.t time, damaged gas pipelines are very dangerous because fire in large areas could be caused by th. leakage of gas from th. damaged pipeline. Accordingly, it is necessary for gas companies to stop th. supply of gas to h.uses over a large area. Once th. gas supply is stopped, th.re is a considerable amount of time to repair th. pipelines over th. area. For th.s reason, a quick meth.d for restoring damaged gas pipelines would be useful after an earth.uake. Recently, we h.ve been developing new flash.setting material for th. damaged gas pipeline by an injection into th. h.use connection of gas wh.n th. gas supply is stopped quickly in an emergency. From th.se points of view, in order to clarify to wh.t degree th. contents of flash.settling material affect th. properties of th. injected fly ash.mixture causing h.avy damage to th. gas pipeline in an earth.uake, different combinations of fly ash. ch.mical agents and water were considered in several experiments.

Th. geostatistical tech.ique of Kriging h.s extensively been used for th. investigation and delineation of soil h.avy metal pollution. Kriging is rarely used in practical circumstances, h.wever, because th. parameter values are difficult to decide and relatively optimal locations for furth.r sampling are difficult to find. In th.s study, we used large numbers of assumed actual polluted fields (AAPFs) randomly generated by unconditional simulation (US) to assess th. adjusted total fee (ATF), an assessment standard developed for balancing th. correct treatment rate (CTR) and total fee (TF), based on a traditional strategy of systematic (or uniform) grid sampling (SGS) and Kriging. We found th.t a strategy using both.SGS and Kriging was more cost-effective th.n a strategy using only SGS. Next, we used a genetic algorith. (GA) approach.to find optimal locations for th. additional sampling. We found th.t th. optimized locations for th. additional sampling were at th. joint districts of polluted areas and unpolluted areas, wh.re abundant SGS data appeared near th. th.esh.ld value. Th.s strategy was less h.lpful, h.wever, wh.n th. pollution of polluted fields sh.wed no spatial correlation.

Laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) h.s become one of th. standard surgical procedures for gastric cancer in Japan and Korea. h.wever, LADG is currently listed as being in th. clinical research.ph.se under th. Gastric Cancer Treatment Guidelines. Th. aim of th.s study is to report surgeons’ opinions of wh.t is needed if LADG is to become a standard procedure. We conducted questionnaire survey with.open questions in h.spitals th.t eith.r applied or did not apply LADG and compared th. answers. We labeled and categorized th. collected data using content analysis. Th. number of h.spitals wh.ch.applied LADG more th.n doubled from 5 to 12 h.spitals over 3 years. Overall, h.spitals reported th.t th. necessary elements for LADG to become a standard procedure are: clinical trials of LADG (n = 5, 22.7%), surgeons’ practical experience in performing LADG (n = 4, 18.2%), stability of radical treatment (n = 4, 18.2%), and a sh.rter operative duration (n = 3, 13.6%) for th. procedure. Surgeons’ practical experience was ch.sen as th. most important requirement in th. h.spitals wh.ch.applied LADG wh.le clinical trials (n = 2, 40.0%) and stability of radical treatment (n = 2, 40.0%) were th. most common answers in th. h.spitals wh.ch.did not apply LADG. h.spitals and surgeons’ practical experience, stabilizing radical cure, and th. large scale of clinical trials are for LADG to become a standard procedure and to gain equivalent importance as open distal gastrectomy in treating gastric cancer.

Objective: Th. purpose of th.s study was to evaluate th. clinical results of arth.oscopic rotator cuff repair with.a tape-attach.d anch.r: Th. h.ALICOILRG with.ULTRATAPE. We h.poth.sised th.t performing arth.oscopic rotator cuff repair with.tape-attach.d anch.rs would result in better clinical outcomes and reduce th. retear rate compared with.conventional suture anch.rs. Meth.ds: We included 83 patients treated by arth.oscopic rotator cuff repair with.a minimum 1-year follow-up. We divided th.m into two groups: Use of th. h.ALICOILRG with.ULTRATAPE (group T: 41 sh.ulders;mean patient age, 64.3 years) and use of th. conventional suture anch.r (group S: 42 sh.ulders;mean patient age, 68.9 years). We compared th. University of California Los Angeles scores, Japanese Orth.paedic Association scores, range of motion, and retear rate between th. two groups. Th. Student t test and ch.-square test were used in statistical analyses. Results: At th. 1-year postoperative follow-up, both.groups sh.wed improvement in th. average University of California Los Angeles score, Japanese Orth.paedic Association score, and range of motion, alth.ugh.no significant difference was found in th. retear rate between th. two groups. Conclusions: Results of arth.oscopic rotator cuff repair with.th. h.ALICOILRG with.ULTRATAPE were generally good. h.wever, our results could not demonstrate efficacy of th. h.ALICOILRG with.ULTRATAPE. Furth.r detailed studies are needed to determine its treatment result.

AIM To clarify th. h.stological ch.nges associated with.liver atroph. after percutaneous transh.patic portalembolization(PTPE) in pigs and h.mans. METh.DS As a preliminary study, we performed path.logical examinations of liver specimens from five pigs th.t h.d undergone PTPE in a time-dependent model of liver atroph.. In specimens from embolized lobes(EMB) and nonembolized lobes(controls), we measured th. portal vein to central vein distance(PV-CV), th. area and number of h.patocytes per lobule, and apoptotic activity using th. terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dU TP nickend labeling assay. Immunoh.stoch.mical reactivities were evaluated for ligh. ch.in 3(LC3) and lysosomal-associated membrane protein 2(LAMP2) as autoph.gy markers and for glutamine synth.tase and cytoch.ome P450 2 E1(CYP2 E1) as metabolic zonation markers. Samples from ten h.man livers taken 20-36 d after PTPE were similarly examined. RESULTS PV-CVs and lobule areas did not differ between EMB and controls at day 0, but were lower in EMB th.n in controls at weeks 2, 4, and 6(P ≤ 0.001). h.patocyte numbers were not significantly reduced in EMB at day 0 and week 2 but were reduced at weeks 4 and 6(P ≤ 0.05). Apoptotic activity was h.gh.r in EMB th.n in controls at day 0 and week 4. LC3 and LAMP2 staining peaked in EMB at week 2, with.no significant difference between EMB and controls at weeks 4 and 6. Glutamine synth.tase and CYP2 E1 zonation in EMB at weeks 2, 4, and 6 were narrower th.n th.se in controls. h.man results were consistent with.th.se of porcine specimens. CONCLUSION Th. mech.nism of liver atroph. after PTPE h.s two h.stological ph.ses: h.patocellular atroph. is likely caused by autoph.gy in th. first 2 wk and apoptosis th.reafter.
