The Immune Response Induced by Hepatitis B Virus Principal Antigens

Hepatitis B virus （HBV） infection occurs primarily in hepatocytes in the liver with release of infectious virions and non-infectious empty surface antigen particles into the bloodstream. HBV replication is non-cytopathic. Transient infections run a course of several months, and chronic infections are often life-long. Chronic infections can lead to liver failure with cirrhosis and hepatocellniar carcinoma. It is generally accepted that neutralizing anti-HBs antibodies plays a key role in recovery from HBV infection by containing the spread of infection in the infected host and facilitating the removal and destruction of viral particles. However, the immune response initiated by the T-cell response to viral antigens is also important for viral clearance and disease pathogenesis in HBV infection. The three structural forms of the viral proteins, the HBsAg, the particulate HBcAg, and the nonparticulate HBeAg, may preferentially elicit different Th cell subsets. The different IgG subclass profiles of anti-HBs, anti-HBc, and anti-HBe in different HBV infection status were revealed. Moreover, the different IgG subclass profiles in chronic carriers did not change with different ALT and AST levels and may reflect the difference between stimulating antigens, immune response, and the stages of viral disease and provide the basis for the use of vaccines and prophylactic treatments for individuals at high risk of human HBV infection. This review elucidates the detailed understanding of the immune responses induced during transient and persistent infection, and the development of immunotherapy and immunodiagnosis in patients with HBV infection, and possible means of reducing the liver damage.

The advantages of a cloud computing service are cost advantages,availability,scalability,ﬂexibility,reduced time to market,and dynamic access to computing *** can improve the successful adoption rate of cloud computing services if they understand the critical ***ﬁnd critical factors,this studyﬁrst reviewed the literature and established a three-layer hierarch-ical factor table for adopting a cloud computing service based on the Technology-Organization-Environment ***,a hybrid method that combines two multi-criteria decision-making tools—called the Fuzzy Analytic Network Process method and the concept of VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje acceptable advantage—was used to objectively identify critical factors for the adop-tion of a cloud computing service,replacing the subjective decision of the *** results of this study determinedﬁve critical factors,namely data access secur-ity,information transmission security,senior management support,fallback cloud management,and employee ***,the paper presents theﬁndings and implications of the study.

The utilization of traditional Chinese medicine and associated factors in Taiwan in 2002

Background Previous studies have noted that there is a high utilization rate of traditional Chinese medicine （TCM） services in Taiwan, China and in western countries, but few studies investigated factors associated with the utilization of TCM in Taiwan. This study analyzes the utilization rate and the factors associated with the utilization of TCM in Taiwan. Methods Data for this study were from the 2002 HPKAP Survey that conducted the face-to-face questionnaire interviews of people aged 15 years and over from October 2002 to March 2003 in Taiwan. This study analyzed the utilization of TCM outpatient services, including admission to the hospital and clinic visits. Results A total of 26 755 participants completed the survey in the six-month period. The data revealed that 10.4% of participants had utilized TCM services in the past one month while 4.2% of participants utilized TCM only （without using Western medicine outpatient services （WM） or Folk therapy （FT））. The average visits of TCM services per patient was higher among people who had utilized TCM and FT services （2.68 visits） than among those who had utilized WM and FT services （2.15 visits） or TCM services alone （2.15 visits） during the previous one month. Younger people （odds ratio OR = 1.78, 95%CI= 1.47-2.16）, women （compared with men）, and people with higher education levels （OR = 1.58, 95%CI= 1.25-1.98） were more likely to visit TCM than compared groups. People with self-reported poor health status （OR = 2.07, 95%CI= 1.76-2.44） and people who exercise regularly （OR = 1.17, 95%CI= 1.07-1.27） had higher ORs to visit TCM service than comparison group. Conclusions There is a high utilization of TCM in Taiwan. Further studies are needed to investigate the related factors and determinants between the utilization of TCM and the utilization of FT in Taiwan.

Role of body mass index in colon cancer patients in Taiwan

AIM： To determine the effect of body mass index （BMI） on the characteristics and overall outcome of colon cancer in Taiwan. METHODS： From January 1995 to July 2003, 2138 patients with colon cancer were enrolled in this study. BMI categories （in kg/m2） were established according to the classification of the Department of Health of Tai- wan. Postoperative morbidities and mortality, and survival analysis including overall survival （OS）, disease- free survival （DFS）, and cancer-specific survival （CSS） were compared across the BMI categories.27 kg/m2） patients. Being female, apparently anemic, hypoalbuminemic, and having body weight loss was more likely among underweight patients than among the other patients （P 〈 0.001）. Underweight patients had higher mortality rate （P = 0.00.7） and lower OS （P 〈 0.001） and DFS （P = 0.002） than the other pa- tients. OS and DFS did not differ significantly between normal-weight, overweight, and obese patients, while CSS did not differ significantly with the BMI category. CONCLUSION： In Taiwan, BMI does not significantly affect colon-CSS. Underweight patients had a higher rate of surgical mortality and a worse OS and DFS than the other patients. Obesity does not predict a worse survival.

Treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection:Current status and future concepts

Helicobacter pylori(***)infection is highly associated with the occurrence of gastrointestinal diseases,including gastric inflammation,peptic ulcer,gastric cancer,and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid-tissue *** alternative therapies,including phytomedicines and probiotics,have been used to improve eradication,current treatment still relies on a combination of antimicrobial agents,such as amoxicillin,clarithromycin,metronidazole,and levofloxacin,and antisecretory agents,such as proton pump inhibitors(PPIs).A standard triple therapy consisting of a PPI and two antibiotics(clarithromycin and amoxicillin/metronidazole)is widely used as the first-line regimen for treatment of infection,but the increased resistance of *** to clarithromycin and metronidazole has significantly reduced the eradication rate using this therapy and bismuth-containing therapy or 10-d sequential therapy has therefore been proposed to replace standard triple ***,levofloxacin-based triple therapy can be used as rescue therapy for *** infection after failure of first-line *** increase in resistance to antibiotics,including levofloxacin,may limit the applicability of such ***,since resistance of *** to amoxicillin is generally low,an optimized high dose dual therapy consisting of a PPI and amoxicillin can be an effective first-line or rescue *** addition,the concomitant use of alternative medicine has the potential to provide additive or synergistic effects against *** infection,though its efficacy needs to be verified in clinical studies.

A dermatoglyphic study of the Amis aboriginal population of Taiwan

Amis is the largest aboriginal population in Taiwan. The previous dermatoglyphic studies of the Amis only reported limited data. In this study, we collected and analyzed the dermatoglyphs of 200 Amis in-dividuals, and we reported a wide range of dermatoglyphic variables including total finger ridge count, a-b ridge count, atd angle, axial triradius percent distance, and frequencies of fingerprint pattern, pal-mar thenar pattern, palmar interdigital pattern, and simian line. This study is the first comprehensive dermatoglyphic research of Amis since 1960s, and its dermatoglyphic data will be useful for future re-search in anthropology, genetics and medicine.

BACKGROUND Corneal neovascularization(CoNV)is the second major cause of *** endothelial growth factor(VEGF)inhibitors,e.g.,bevacizumab,have been used to prevent *** We conducted an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials to examine the efficacy and safety of anti-VEGF in *** A literature search was conducted using three electronic *** difference(MD),standard mean difference(SMD),and relative risk(RR)are used to estimate the effect *** Nine randomized controlled and three non-randomized trials were *** pooled results demonstrated a significant reduction of CoNV area/Length(SMD=-1.17,95%CI:-1.58 to-0.75),best corrected visual acuity(MD=-0.54,95%CI:-0.91 to-0.17),and graft rejection(RR=0.44,95%CI:0.24 to 0.8)and failure(RR=0.39,95%CI:0.19 to 0.78)rates in the anti-VEGF group than the placebo group.A non-significant reduction of the epithelial defect was also observed in the bevacizumab group compared with the placebo(RR=0.56,95%CI:0.30 to 1.06).Compared with a placebo,the unsynthesizable trials also support that bevacizumab improves visual acuity,CoNV,graft rejection,and failure *** reporting other comparisons revealed the superiority of combined remedy with bevacizumab compared to other treatments in reducing *** Anti-VEGF agents,mainly bevacizumab,are an effective and safe treatment for CoNV of all causes and prevent corneal graft rejection and failure in corneal transplantation.
