Performance of Three Adelphocoris spp.(Hemiptera: Miridae) on Flowering and Non-flowering Cotton and Alfalfa

The genus Adelphocoris（Hemiptera： Miridae） is a group of key insect pests in cotton fields in China that includes three dominant species： A. suturalis（Jakovlev）, A. lineolatus（Goeze） and A. fasciaticollis（Reuter）. Previous field surveys have found that adults of these Adelphocoris species usually move onto specific host plants when the plants enter the flowering stage. To determine the potential trade-offs for this host-plant preference behavior, the performance of these three Adelphocoris spp. on flowering and non-flowering cotton and alfalfa were compared in the laboratory. The results showed that Adelphocoris spp. had significantly higher nymphal developmental and survival rates, along with increased adult longevity and fecundity on flowering cotton and alfalfa than on non-flowering plants of either species. In addition, compared with cotton plants, alfalfa generally promoted better performance of these three Adelphocoris species, especially for A. lineolatus. Simple correlation analysis indicated that female adult longevity was positively correlated to male adult longevity and female fecundity, and female fecundity was positively correlated to nymphal development and survival rates. This study demonstrated a positive correlation between adult preference and offspring/adult performance for all three Adelphocoris species, with no evidence of any trade-offs for this preference for flowering host plants. These findings support the hypothesis that hemimetabolous insects such as mirid bugs have positive adult preference-adult/nymphal performance relationships, which is likely due to the similar feeding habits and nutritional requirements of adults and nymphs.

Magnetic Properties as Indicators of Cu and Zn Contamination in Soils

Concentrations of copper （Cu） and zinc （Zn） and various magnetic parameters in contaminated urban roadside soils were investigated using chemical analysis and magnetic measurements. The results revealed highly elevated Cu and Zn concentrations as well as magnetic susceptibility in the roadside soils. The mean concentrations of Cu and Zn in these roadside soils were almost twice those in average Chinese soils, with the mean magnetic susceptibility of the roadside soils reaching about 179 ×10^-8 m^3 kg^-1. This enhanced magnetic susceptibility was attributed to the presence of anthropogenic soft ferrimagnetic particles. A low frequency-dependent susceptibility （2.5%± 1.0%） observed in the roadside soils indicated the coarse multidomain （MD） ferrimagnetic grains to be the dominant contributor to magnetic susceptibility. The Cu and Zn concentration of the soils had highly significant linear correlations with magnetic susceptibility （P 〈 0.01）, anhysteretic remanent magnetization （P 〈 0.01）, and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization （P 〈 0.01）. This suggested that heavy metals were associated with ferrimagnetic particles in soils, which were attributed to input of traffic emissions and industrial activities. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectra of magnetic extracts of the roadside soils further suggested the llnk between the magnetic signal and concentrations of heavy metals. Thus, the magnetic parameters could provide a proxy measure for the level of heavy metal contamination and could be a potential tool for the detection and mapping of contaminated soils.

The Complexity and On-Line Algorithm for Automated Storage and Retrieval System with Stacker Cranes on One Rail

This paper considers an on-line scheduling and routing problem concerning the automated storage and retrieval system from tobacco industry. In this problem, stacker cranes run on one common rail between two racks. Multiple input/output-points are located at the bottom of the racks. The stacker cranes transport bins between the input/output-points and cells on the racks to complete requests generated over time. Each request should be accomplished within its response time. The objective is to minimize the time by which all the generated requests are completed. Under a given physical layout, the authors study the complexity of the problem and design on-line algorithms for both one-stacker-crane model and two-stacker-crane model. The algorithms axe validated by instances and numerical simulations.

In this paper we present the effective strategy of Fe^(3+)and Li^(+)co-doping to enhance the electrostrain of ZnO thin ***_(0.88)(Fe_(0.06)Li_(0.06))O thin film exhibits an excellent d_(33)^(*)value of 415 pm/V and large linear electrostrain of 0.68%after thermal-electric *** the X-ray diffraction and first principle calculation results have indicated that the Fe^(3+)and Li^(+)ions are inclined to adopt a preferential alignment along the edges approximately parallel to[001]direction in the zinc-oxygen tetrahedron and constitute a defect dipole(ionic pairs).It is considered that the local lattice distortion and the electric field-triggered polarization extension and rotation generated by preferential distributed Fe^(3+)-Li^(+)ionic pairs are responsible for the outstanding piezoelectric properties and large linear electrostrain.

Electrochemical Performance and Capacity Fading Mechanism of LiFePO4 at Different pH Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions

The electrochemical stability of LiFePO4 in a Li＋-containing aqueous electrolyte solution is critically dependent on the pH value of the aqueous solution. It shows a considerable decay in capacity of LiFePO4 upon cycling when the pH value is increased to 11. The mechanism responsible for the capacity fading is extensively investigated by means of cyclic voltammogram, ac impedance, charge/discharge, ex situ X-ray diffraction, and chemical analysis. LiFePO4 is relatively electrochemically stable in LiNO3 aqueous solution with pH=7. But the electrochemical performance of LiFePO4 in aqueous electrolyte is inferior to that in organic electrolyte. It is attributed to the loss of Li and the Fe, P dissolution during prolonged charge-discharge in aqueous medium. A precipitate is formed on the surface of LiFePO4 electrodes. It results in the change of crystalline structure, a large electrode polarization, and capacity fading.

Approaches towards the core pentasaccharide in N-linked glycans

All eukaryotic cells share a common core pentasaccharide, Man3GlcNAc2 （M3）, which is found in both dolichol-linked oligosaccharides （DLOs） and N-linked glycoproteins. A pentasaccharide M3 can be elongated and elaborated by various glycosyltransferases and is thus considered as the key intermediate in the in vitro synthetic pathway of N-glycans. In this review, we describe the progresses in the preparation of M3 by chemical and chemoenzymatic methods. We first draw a brief schematic view of the typical N-glycan biological pathway and then focus on the requirements and challenges in obtaining core pentasaccharides. Representative methods and recent reported findings, especially research progress in chemoenzymatic synthesis, are highlighted. In addition, the opportunities in exploiting novel methods for constructing N-glycans, as well as their applications, are discussed.

Phase-field simulation of competitive growth of grains in a binary alloy during directional solidification

Taking Al-2%mole-Cu binary alloy as an example, the influence of grain orientation on competitive growth of dendrites under different competitive modes was investigated by using the three-dimensional(3-D) phasefield method. The result of phase-field simulation was verified by applying cold spray and directional remelting. In the simulation process, two competitive modes were designed: in Scheme 1, the monolayer columnar grains in multilayer columnar crystals had different orientations; while in Scheme 2, they had the same orientation. The simulation result showed that in Scheme 1, the growth of the dendrites, whose orientation had a certain included angle with the direction of temperature gradient, was restrained by the growth of other dendrites whose direction was parallel to the direction of temperature gradient. Moreover, the larger the included angle between the grain orientation and temperature gradient, the earlier the cessation of dendrite growth. The secondary dendrites of dendrites whose grain orientation was parallel to the temperature gradient flourished with increasing included angles between the grain orientation and temperature gradient. In Scheme 2, the greater the included angle between grain orientation and temperature gradient, the easier the dendrites whose orientation showed a certain included angle with temperature gradient inserted between those grew parallel to the temperature gradient, and the better the growth condition thereafter. Some growing dendrites after intercalation were deflected to the temperature gradient, and the greater the included angle, the lower the deflection. The morphologies of the competitive growth dendrites obtained through simulation can also be found in metallographs of practical solidification experiments. This implies that the two modes of competitive growth of dendrites characterized in the simulation do exist and frequently appear in practical solidification processes.

The practical applications of carbon anode for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)are largely obstructed by their moderate rate capability and cyclic ***,we report a N,S-codoped porous carbon nanosheet(NSC)decorated with Fe_(3)C nanoparticles(Fe_(3)C/NSC)by a one-pot pyrolysis *** high surface area and abundant defects of NSC can not only promote electrons and ions transfer,but also induce high pseudocapacitive *** importantly,the synergistic catalysis effect of Fe-Nx and Fe_(3)C can catalyze the reversible conversion of some solid electrolyte interface(SEI)components to offer excess capacity during *** expected,the Fe_(3)C-NSC anode delivers a discharge capacity of750 mAh·g^(-1)under a current density of 0.5 A·g^(-1)through 500 cycles and retains a dis-charge capacity of 366 mAh·g^(-1)at 4 A·g^(-1)after 1600 cycles,*** importantly,the lithium-ion capacitors based on Fe_(3)C/NSC anode demonstrate a high energy density of 249.5 Wh·kg^(-1)at 560 W·kg^(-1).
