Increased nighttime respiratory losses decrease the amount of photoassimilates av.ilable for plant growth and yield. We hypothesized that the increased respiratory carbon loss under high night temperatures(HNT) could be compensated for by increased photosynthesis during the day following HNT exposure. Two rice genotypes, v.ndana(HNT-sensitiv.) and Nagina 22(HNT-tolerant), were exposed to HNT(4 ℃ abov. the control) from flowering to physiological maturity. They were assessed for alterations in the carbon balance of the source(flag leaf) and its subsequent impact on grain filling dynamics and the quality of spatially differentiated sinks(superior and inferior spikelets). Both genotypes exhibited significantly higher night respiration rates. Howev.r, only Nagina 22 compensated for the high respiration rates with an increased photosynthetic rate, resulting in a steady production of total dry matter under HNT. Nagina 22 also recorded a higher grain-filling rate, particularly at 5 and 10 d after flowering, with 1.5- and 4.0-fold increases in the translocation of ^(14)C sugars to the superior and inferior spikelets, respectiv.ly. The ratio of photosynthetic rate to respiratory rate on a leaf area basis was negativ.ly correlated with spikelet sterility, resulting in a higher filled spikelet number and grain weight per plant, particularly for inferior grains in Nagina 22. Grain quality parameters such as head rice recov.ry, high-density grains, and gelatinization temperature were maintained in Nagina 22. An increase in the rheological properties of rice flour starch in Nagina 22 under HNT indicated the stability of starch and its ability to reorganize during the cooling process of product formation. Thus, our study showed that sink adjustments between superior and inferior spikelets fav.red the growth of inferior spikelets, which helped to offset the reduction in grain weight under HNT in the tolerant genotype Nagina 22.

Background and Objectiv.s. Of children diagnosed with urinary tract infection,30% to 40% hav. primary v.sicoureteral reflux (v.R). For the majority of these children,treatment inv.lv.s long-term prophylactic antibiotics (ABX) and a periodic v.iding cystourethrogram (v.UG) until resolution of v.R as detected by v.UG. Radiation exposure and considerable discomfort hav. been associated with v.UG. To date,no clear guidelines exist regarding the timing of follow-up v.UGs. The objectiv. of this study was to dev.lop a clinically applicable algorithm for the optimal timing of repeat v.UGs and v.lidate this algorithm in a retrospectiv. cohort of children with v.R. Methods. Based on prev.ously published data regarding the probability of resolution of v.R ov.r time,a decision-tree model (DTM) was dev.loped. The DTM compared the differential impact of 3 timing schedules of v.UGs (yearly,ev.ry 2 years,and ev.ry 3 years) on the av.rage numbers of v.UGs performed,years of ABX exposure,and ov.rall costs. Based on the DTM,an algorithmoptimizing the timing of v.UG was dev.loped. The algorithm then was v.lidated in a retrospectiv. cohort of patients at an urban pediatric referral center. Data were extracted from the medical records regarding number of v.UGs,time of ABX prophylaxis,and complications associated with either. v.R in patients in the cohort was grouped into mild v.R (grades I and II and unilateral grade III for those ≤ 2 years old),and moderate/ sev.re v.R (other grade III and grade Iv.. Kaplan-Meier surv.v.l curv.s were created from the cohort data. From the surv.v.l curv.s,the median times to resolution of v.R were determined for the cohort,and these times were compared with the median times to v.R resolution of the data used for the DTM. The numbers of v.UGs performed,time of ABX exposure,and costs in the cohort were compared with those that would hav. occurred if the algorithm had been applied to both mild and moderate/sev.re v.R groups. Achiev.ng secure bony fixation of medial canthus is a challenge. We used a resorbable poly-L-lactic acid-polygl- ycolic acid screw (LactoSorb office fixation kit) in 5 cases: 2 with traumatic medial canthal dystopia, 1 with scleroderma and orbital fat atrophy causing malapposition of the medial canthus to globe, and 2 with inv.siv. medial canthal tumors necessitating subtotal medial orbital exenteration. The resorbable screw with preplaced suture was drilled into the medial orbital wall, using a handheld self-drilling tap. The preplaced suture was used to anchor the medial canthus. We achiev.d satisfactory canthal position in all 5 cases. There were no complications in 4 cases during a mean±SD follow-up of 11.3±6 months; howev.r, the scleroderma case dev.loped wound dehiscence 6 weeks after surgery. The LactoSorb kit is a safe and effectiv. technique to achiev. bonymedial canthal fixation in carefully selected cases.
