Geospatial and clinical analyses on pediatric related road traffic injury in Malaysia

BACKGROUND: The main aim of this study is to utilize the geographical information system(GIS) software and perform the spatial analysis in relation to clinical data for road traffi c injury(RTI) pediatric cases attending the emergency ***: The study sample included pediatric patients(age less than 18 years) with roadrelated injuries within a district in Malaysia who attended emergency departments of two tertiary hospitals within the district. In addition to injury, pre-hospital care and outcome data, the coordinate of the locations were obtained by the ambulance paramedics by using portable handheld GPS unit brand Garmin? model GPS 72 H. The data was transferred into the excel format which in turn underwent GIS analysis by using ARCGIS?(by ESRI) software version 10.1 licensed to the study ***: A total of 102(24.8%) of all motor vehicle crash(MVC) victims involved the pediatric age group(age 18 years and below). The mean(SD) age of the pediatric victims was 14.30 years(SD 3.830). Male comprised of 68(66.7%) of the cases. Motorcyclists [88(88.0%)] were the most common type of victims involved. Interestingly, the majority of the severely injured victims [75(73%)] sustained the RTI on roads with maximum speed limit of 60 km/hour. The mean(SD) length of hospital stay was 7.83 days(5.59).CONCLUSION: The pediatric related road traffic injury in Malaysia causes significant health and social burden in the country. This study showed both important clinical and geographical factors that need to be taken into consideration for future preventive action.

The Buffering analysis to identify common geographical factors within the vicinity of severe injury related to motor vehicle crash in Malaysia

BACKGROUND:The main objective was to identify common geographical buildup within the100-meter buffer of severely injured based on injury severity score(ISS) among the motor vehicle crash(MVC) victims in ***:This was a prospective cohort study from July 2011 until June 2013 and involved all MVC patients attending emergency departments(ED) of two tertiary centers in a district in Malaysia.A set of digital maps was obtained from the Town Planning Unit of the district Municipal Office(local district map).Vector spaces were spanned over these maps using GIS software(ARCGIS 10.1licensed to the study center),and data from the identified severe injured cases based on ISS of 16 or more were *** analysis was performed and included all events occurring within a 100-meter perimeter around a reference ***:A total of 439 cases were recruited over the ten-month data collection *** two(11%) of the cases were categorized as severe cased based on ISS scoring of 16 and *** buffer analysis looking at the buildup areas within the vicinity of the severely injured locations showed that most of the severe injuries occurred at locations on municipal roads(15,29%),straight roads(16,30%) and within villages buildup(suburban) areas(18,35%).CONCLUSION:This study has successfully achieved its objective in identifying common geographical factors and buildup areas within the vicinity of severely injured road traffic cases.

Effects of In-Situ Cadmium Exposure on Morphometric Indices of Anabas testudineus

Anthropogenic activities have greatly affected water resources on a global scale where the world is experiencing water quality and resources issues. Heavy metal is a crucial group of pollutants that is toxic to the environment even at low concentrations due to its bioaccumulation and biomagnification capabilities in living organisms. The detrimental effects of heavy metals on living organisms are due to their bioaccumulation in the aquatic ecosystem. Cadmium may result in adverse health effects due to its high toxicity. The study is conducted to determine the cadmium exposure effects on the morphometric indices of Anabas testudineus which are the Scaling Coefficient (SC) and Condition Factor (K) of such species. Anabas testudineus is exposed to four different cadmium treatment groups namely the control group, cadmium treatment group of 0.005 mg/L, 0.010 mg/L, and 0.015 mg/L for 16 weeks. The findings of the study have reported inconsistent trends in the values of SC and a decrease in the value of K with increasing cadmium concentration. The trend for the average SC has shown an overall decrease in value while the pattern of the K value is inconsistent in each treatment group with exposure time. Collectively, no significant differences for SC and K of A. testudineus in different treatment groups as well as comparison between treatment groups with time exposure.

Transmission Range-Aware Clustering for Green Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc Networks

The absence of network infrastructure and opportunistic spectrum access in cognitive radio ad hoc networks （CRAHNs） results in connectivity and stability problems. Clustering is known as an effective technique to overcome this problem. Clustering improves network performance by implementing a logical network backbone. Therefore, how to efficiently construct this backbone among CRAHNs is of interest. In this paper, we propose a new clustering algorithm for CRAHNs. Moreover, we model a novel cluster head selection function based on the channel heterogeneity in term of transmission ranges. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to model the channel heterogeneity into the clustering formation in cognitive radio networks. Simulation results show that the performance of clustering is significantly improved by the channel heterogeneity considerations.

Influence of geometry on legibility： An explanatory design study of visitors at the Kuala Lumpur City Center

Legibility is based on landmarks and geometry. Visitors in a space learn to ＂read＂ an area by using three- and two-dimensional cues. This research aimed to determine the responses of visitors to the influence of geometry on the legibility at Kuala Lumpur City Center （KLCC）. The relationship between geometry and space legibility can affect visitors＇ wayfinding. In this study, visitors, including 86 respondents and 8 individuals who participated in a focus group, were surveyed through questionnaires and interviews during daytime. Results show that legibility was moderately and positively correlated with regular geometry, but legibility was negligibly affected by existing geometry. Regression analysis, Hest, ANOVA, and scheme coding of qualitative data suggested that regular geometry used in urban spaces might strongly improve legibility. For urban designers, regular geometry associated with landmarks enhances legibility.

Alzheimer’s disease （AD） is an age-related eurodegenerative disease that represents the most common cause of dementia among the elderly people. With the increasingly aging population, AD has presented an overwhelming healthcare challenge to modern society; the World Alzheimer Report 2015 has estimated that 46.8 million people worldwide lived with dementia in 2015 and this number will rise to 74.7 million in 2030 and that the total cost of dementia was 818 billion in US$ in 2015 and will reach two trillion in 2030. Post-mortem studies have identified two histopathological hallmarks in the brains of AD patients; extracellular senile plaque with elevated deposition of amyloid β （Aβ） peptides, and intracellular neurofibrillary tangle composed of hyper-phosphorylated microtubule-associated protein ***, progressive neuronal loss within the cerebral cortex and hippocampus regions of the brain leads to irreversible decline in, and eventually complete loss of, memory and other cognitive functions that afflict AD patients. The widely-accepted amyloid cascade hypothesis for AD pathogenesis holds that accumulation and aggregation of neurotoxic Aβ peptides, due to imbalance of their generation and clearance as a result of changes in genetic makeup, aging and/or exposure to environmental risk factors, is a major and early trigger of AD. This hypothesis has continuously gained support by preclinical and clinical studies （Selkoe and Hardy, 2016）. However, the intensive and costly drug discovery efforts over the past decades based on such a hypothesis have proved extremely frustrating in developing effective therapeutics to treat or slow down the progress of AD, highlighting the need for more research to improve our understanding towards the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which Aβ peptides bring about neurotoxicity and cognitive dysfunction.

The policy of encouraging agriculture and development for mass tourism has led to environmental problems in Cameron Highlands,*** development and land clearing have significantly altered the land cover of Cameron Highlands for the past 30 *** highlands areas are prone to landslides and soil erosion which then contributed to the main water pollution issues in the network of river system,sedimentation and *** continuous trend of river water quality deterioration in Cameron Highlands has raised the issues for discussion in this review *** purpose of this review is to briefly summarize the land use change,agriculture practices,agro-tourism,and agriculture policy and management toward water quality of the river system network in Cameron Highlands specifically in the downtown where most of the development and agriculture activities are concentrated.A rigorous review has been done on the existing literature to determine the relationship between land use change and agriculture practices toward river water quality in Cameron Highlands from 2001 to *** total number of reviewed papers was *** outcomes established from previous researchers have highlighted factors such as soil erosion,landslides,agriculture activities,urbanization,and unplanned development associated with land use change have significantly influenced the river water quality in the highland *** land use changes without proper development plan and law enforcement may critically threaten the sustainability of river network in the highlands area.

Identification of commonly regulated genes in HPV18-and HPV16-infected cervical cancer cells treated with the curcumin analogue 1,5-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,4-pentadiene-3-one

Objective: To identify commonly regulated genes in HPV-infected He La and Ca Ski cervical cancer cells treated with curcumin analogue 1,5-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,4-pentadiene-3-one(MS17) and to explore potential mechanisms that underlie its cytotoxic, anti-proliferative and apoptotic activity. Methods: He La and Ca Ski cells were treated with 2×EC50 and 3×EC50 doses of MS17 for 24 h and the RNA extracts were subjected to one-colour microarray-based gene expression profiling. Pair-wise significant genes(false discovery rate-corrected, P<0.05) were analysed for fold change(FC) compared to control samples. Differentially expressed genes with FC≥2.0(up-regulated; FC≥2.0 and down-regulated; FC≤-2.0) compared to the control samples were filtered through and analysed to create a global gene expression profile. Mutually regulated genes were ranked by FC and categorised by gene ontology. Results: Our data indicated dose-dependent regulation by MS17 and identified top 20 mutually upand down-regulated genes each in He La and Ca Ski cells. Amongst these 17 were commonly regulated in both cell lines. These include the up-regulation of CCL26, DEFB103 B, IL1 RL1, LY96, GCNT3, MMP10, MMP3, GADD45 G and HSPA6, and the down-regulation of TENM2, NEBL, KIFC1, CTDSP1, IGFBP5, LTBP1, NREP and MXD3. These genes were associated with key biological functions that were proposed to mediate the anticancer activity of MS17 in cervical cancer cells such as immune response, metabolic processes, proteolysis, programmed cell death, unfolded protein response, cell adhesion, cytoskeletal organisation, phosphatase activity, signal transduction and transcription regulator activity. Conclusions: Identification of seventeen common genes modulated by MS17 could be used as potential therapeutic targets in both cervical cancer cell lines and the findings of this study could be used to present an insight into the potential antitumor activity of MS17 in cervical cancer.

Effect of Y-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) and Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) Towards Preparation of Oil Absorbent Foams from Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Reinforced with Microfibrillated Cellulose (MFC)

Increasing usage of foams in various industry sectors had causing serious disposal problems once it reaches the end of its ***,PVA-MFC foam was prepared by freeze-drying using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and microfibrillated cellulose(MFC)as a reinforced material from sugarcane bagasse(SCB).In this study,the PVA-MFC foam was chemically silylated with Y-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(MPS)and tetraethoxysilane(TEOS).The wetting ability and mechanical strength of the silylated_(2,20)PVA-MFC foam was greatly enhanced compared with unmodified_(2,20)PVA-MFC *** silane chemicals(MPS and TEOS)had been confirmed grafted on_(2,20)PVA-MFC foam due to the presence of Si-C and Si-O-C stretching vibration as showed in Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR)spectra and cloud-like coating of porous pore was observed in scanning electron microscopy(SEM)*** silylated_(2,20)PVA-MFC foam(MPS and TEOS)exhibited a series of desirable properties such as lower swelling ratio and high absorption capacity of solvents and oils but had low thermal stability in thermogravimetric(TGA)*** characterization of_(2,20)PVA-MFC foam using TEOS was further investigated.A significant difference in morphology was clearly observed between the unmodified and silylated_(2,20)PVA-MFC-TEOS foam through field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM)*** X-ray photoelectron(XPS)analysis of silylated_(2,20)PVA-MFC-TEOS foam confirmed the presence of C,O and trace amount of Si *** synthesized_(2,20)PVA-MFC foam could be a promising material for broad range of polymer foam applications.

Green Architecture for Dense Home Area Networks Based on Radio-over-Fiber with Data Aggregation Approach

The high-density population leads to crowded cities. The future city is envisaged to encompass a large-scale network with diverse applications and a massive number of interconnected heterogeneous wireless-enabled devices. Hence, green technology elements are crucial to design sustainable and future-proof network architectures. They are the solutions for spectrum scarcity, high latency, interference, energy efficiency, and scalability that occur in dense and heterogeneous wireless networks especially in the home area network （HAN）. Radio-over-fiber （ROF） is a technology candidate to provide a global view of HAN＇s activities that can be leveraged to allocate orthogonal channel communications for enabling wireless-enabled HAN devices transmission, with considering the clustered-frequency-reuse approach. Our proposed network architecture design is mainly focused on enhancing the network throughput and reducing the average network communications latency by proposing a data aggregation unit （DAU）. The performance shows that with the DAU, the average network communications latency reduces significantly while the network throughput is enhanced, compared with the existing ROF architecture without the DAU.
