Responses of soil nitrogen, phosphorous and organic matter to vegetation succession on the Loess Plateau of China

Revegetation is a traditional practice widely used for soil protection. We evaluated the effect of natural revegetation succession on soil chemical properties and carbon fractions （particulate organic carbon （POC）, humus carbon （HS-C）, humic acid carbon （HA-C） and fulvic acid carbon （FA-C）） on the Loess Plateau of China. The vegetation types, in order from the shortest to the longest enclosure duration, were：（a） abandoned overgrazed grassland （AbG3; 3 years）; （b） Hierochloe odorata Beauv. （HiO7; 7 years）; （c） Thymus mongoficus Ronnm （ThM15; 15 years）; （d） Artemisia sacrorum Ledeb （AtS25; 25 years）; （e） Stipa bungeana Trin Ledeb （StB36; 36 years） and （f） Stipa grandis P. Smirn （StG56; 56 years）. The results showed that the concentrations of soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and available phosphorus increased with the increase of restoration time except for ThM15. The concen- tration of NH4-N increased in the medium stage （for ThM15 and AtS25） and decreased in the later stage （for StB36 and StG56） of vegetation restoration. However, NO3-N concentration significantly increased in the later stage （for StB36 and StG56）. Carbon fractions had a similar increasing trend during natural vegetation restoration. The con- centrations of POC, HS-C, FA-C and HA-C accounted for 24.5%-49.1%, 10.6%-15.2%, 5.8%-9.1% and 4.6%-6.1% of total carbon, respectively. For AbG3, the relative changes of POC, HS-C and FA-C were significantly higher than that of total carbon during the process of revegetation restoration. The higher relative increases in POC, HS-C and FA-C confirmed that soil carbon induced by vegetation restoration was sequestrated by higher physical and chemical protection. The increases of soil C fractions could also result in higher ecological function in semiarid grassland ecosystems.

Aggregate Characteristics During Natural Revegetation on the Loess Plateau

Field investigations and laboratory analysis were conducted to study the characteristics of soil water-stable aggregates during vegetation rehabilitation in typical grassland soils of the hilly-gullied loess area. The relationship between water- stable aggregates and other soil properties was analyzed using canonical correlation analysis and principal component analysis. The results show that during the natural revegetation, the aggregates 〉 5 mm dominated and constituted between 50% and 80% of the total soil water-stable aggregates in most of the soil layers. The 2-5 mm aggregate class was the second main component. The mean value of water-stable aggregates 〉 5 mm within the 0-2 m soil profile under different plant communities decreased in the following order： Stipa grandis 〉 Stipa bungeana Trin. 〉 Artemisia sacrorum Ledeb. 〉 Thymus mongolicus Ronn. 〉 Hierochloe odorata （L.） Beauv. Clay, organic matter, and total N were the key factors that influenced the water stability of the aggregates. Total N and organic matter were the main factors that affected the water stability of the aggregates 〉 5 mm and 0.5-1 mm in size. The contents of Fe2O3, Al2O3, and physical clay （〈 0.01 mm） were the main factors which affected the water stability of the 1-2 and 0.25-0.5 mm aggregates.

Tetra-EDOT substituted 3D electrochromic polymers with lower band gaps

A couple of novel electrochromic materials poly(2,3,4,5-tetrakis(2,3-hydrothieno[3,4-b]dixin-5-yl)-1-methyl-1H-pyrrole)(P(t-EDOT-mPy))and poly(5,5',5",5'"-(thiophene-2,3,4,5-tetrayl)tetrakis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxine))(P(t-EDOTTh))are electrodeposited via multi-position polymerization of their tetra-EDOT substituted monomers t-EDOT-mPy and t-EDOT-Th,*** with the linear 2D structured poly(thiophene)(E_g=2.2 eV)and poly(2,5-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)thiophene)(E_g=1.7eV),P(t-EDOT-Th)(E_g=1.62eV)has the lowest band ***,we speculate that the band gaps of the two polymers,having 3D structures,are decreased in contrast to non-substituted polymers or bi-EDOT substituted polymers,thiophene and *** results indicated that P(t-EDOT-Th)thin films are more stable and show higher transmittance amid two polymers,which may find their utilization in organic optoelectronics.

Accumulation characteristic of protein bodies in different regions of wheat endosperm under drought stress

The structural characteristics of protein body accumulation in different endosperm regions of hard wheat cultivar （XM33） and soft wheat cultivar （NM13） under drought stress were investigated. Drought stress treatment was implemented from plant regreening to the caryopsis mature stage. Microscope images of endosperm cells were obtained using resin semi- thin slice technology to observe the distribution and relative area of protein body （PB）. Compared with NM13, relative PB area of XM33 was significantly higher in sub-aleurone endosperm region. The amount of accumulation, including the size and relative area of PB, in two wheat cultivars was higher in sub-aleurone region than that in central region at 18 days post anthesis （DPA）. Drought stress significantly enhanced the sizes and relative areas of PBs in the dorsal and abdominal endosperms in two wheat cultivars. Particularly for dorsal endosperm, drought stress enhanced the relative PB area at 18 DPA and NM13 （5.0% vs. 6.73%） showed less enhancement than XM33 （5.49% vs. 8.96%）. However, NM13 （9.58% vs. 12.02%） showed greater enhancement than XM33 （10.25% vs. 11.7%） at 28 DPA. The protein content in the dorsal and abdominal endosperms of the two wheat cultivars decreased at 12 DPA and then increased until 38 DPA. Drought stress significantly increased the protein contents in the two main regions. From 12 to 38 DPA, the amount of PB accumulation and the protein content were higher in XM33 than those in NM13. The results revealed that PB distribution varied in different endosperm tissues and that the amount of PB accumulation was remarkably augmented by drought stress.

Effects of Photodynamic Therapy on the Ultrastructure of Glioma Cells

To study the change in ultrastructure of C6 glioma cells after photodynamic therapy （PDT）, to compare morphological differences in necrosis and apoptosis before and after PDT treatment, and to evaluate the effect of photodynamic therapy on the blood brain tumor barrier （BTB） of C6 glioma. Methods The model was produced by transplanting C6 glioma cells cultured in vitro using Peterson method into the caudate nuclei of Wister rats. The experiment group received PDT for two weeks after the operation. The sub-cellular structure, blood-brain-barrier （BBB） and BTB in both groups were observed under electron microscope. Results Apoptosis in different phases and necrosis could be observed in some C6 glioma cells. Swelling occurred on the ultrastructure of cellular organs such as mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum in most of the cells. Damage to the BTB, reduction of the number of cellular organs in endothelial cells of the capillary blood vessels, stretch of the tight junction, and enlargement of the gaps between endothelial cells were also seen in the experiment group. Meanwhile, limited impact on the normal sub-ceUular structures and BBB was observed. Conclusion PDT could induce apoptosis and necrosis of C6 glioma cells due to the damage to the ultrastructure of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. The weakened function of C6 glioma BTB initiated by PDT makes it possible to perform a combined therapy of PDT and chemotherapy for glioma.

Enhanced cyclic stability of partially disordered spinel cathodes through direct fluorination with gaseous fluorine

Spinel-type cathodes are considered an optimal substitute for conventional layered oxide cathodes owing to their use of inexpensive and earth-abundant manganese as the redox-active ***,the introduction of cation disorder can effectively suppress the detrimental two-phase reaction to realize high capacities in a wide voltage ***,the continuous capacity decay during cycles has hindered the widespread application of these cathode *** fluorides exhibit excellent electrochemical stability at high voltage;therefore,in this study,the direct F2 gas reaction with a partially disordered spinel cathode(Li_(1.6)Mn_(1.6)O_(3.7)F_(0.3,)LMOF1.6)was initially applied to investigate the impacts of fluorination on the surface structure and electrochemical *** inorganic fluorinated layer,mainly containing LiF,was distributed uniformly on the surface of LMOF1.6nanoparticles after fluorination for an appropriate time without the turbulence caused by the valency of manganese cation,which improved the capacity retention and rate capability by the suppression of structural damage,parasitic reaction,and cation *** LMOF1.6cathode fluorinated for 0.5 h exhibited a capacity of283.6 mAh·g^(-1)at 50 mA·g^(-1)and an enhanced capacity retention of 29.6%after 50 cycles in the voltage range of1.5-4.8 V,as compared to the pristine LMOF1.6 with only27.9%capacity retention.

Molecular engineering tuning optoelectronic properties of thieno[3,2-b]thiophenes-based electrochromic polymers

Thieno[3,2-b]thiophene(TT)monomers end-capped with 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene(EDOT)moieties are electropolymerized to formπ-conjugated polymers with distinct electrochromic(EC)*** and electronic factors(electron donor and acceptor substituents)in the side groups of the TT core,as well as the structure of the polymer backbone strongly affect the electrochemical and optical properties of the polymers and their electrochromic *** studied polymers show low oxidation potentials,tunable from-0.78 to+0.30 V(***/Fc^+)and the band gaps from 1.46 to 1.92 eV and demonstrate wide variety of color palettes in polymer films in different states,finely tunable by structural variations in the polymer backbone and the side *** materials of different colors in their doped/dedoped states have been developed(violet,deep blue,light blue,green,brown,purple-red,pinkish-red,orange-red,light gray,cyan and colorless transparent).High optical contrast(up to 79%),short response time(0.57-0.80 s),good cycling stability(up to 91%at 2000 cycles)and high coloration efficiency(up to 234.6 cm2C^(-1))have been demonstrated and the influence of different factors on the above parameters of EC polymers have been discussed.
