AIM: To explore whether the angiotensin Ⅱ (Ang Ⅱ) receptor 1 (AT1) antagonist, losartan could reduce activity and expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in rat atherosclerotic plaques. METHODS: Male Wistar-Kyoto rats were ip injected a single dose of vitamin D3 600 kU·kg-1·month-1 and fed an atherogenic diet for 4.months to induce experimental atheroma. Then either placebo or losartan 50 mg·kg-1·d-1 was administered in rats for another 2 months. In vitro, the effect of losartan 0.1-10μmol/L on the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was investigated in Ang II-stimulated rat peritoneal macrophages. The expression and activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were monitored by Western blot, RT-PCR, and SDS-PAGE zymography analysis. RESULTS: High levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were expressed in rat atherosclerotic lesions. Losartan significantly reduced the activity and expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 compared with the placebo group (MMP-2, 5861±539 vs 8991±965, P4.23±24.2, P<0.01). In

AIM:To prospectively investigate the association between the XbaⅠpolymorphisms of apolipoprotein B (APOB)gene and gallstone formation following ***:The study was conducted between January 2005 and December 2006.A total of 186 gastric cancer patients who had undergone radical gastrectomy were grouped according to XbaⅠpolymorphisms of APOB gene(X+X-group,n=24.and X-X-group,n =162)and *** XbaⅠpolymorphisms of APOB gene were detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCRRFLP).RESULTS:The incidence of gallstone was significantly higher in the X + X-group than in the X-X-group[54.2% vs 9.3%,RR=5.85(2.23-15.32),P4.02±1.12 vs 3.4.±0.88,P=0.004.before surgery and 3.88±1.09 vs 3.4.±0.86,P=0.008 after surgery).LDL was 2.21±0.96 vs 1.89±0.84.P =0.04.)before surgery and 2.09±0.95 vs 1.72±0.85 (P=0.029)after surgery in the two *** relationship was found between XbaⅠpolymorphisms and gallbladder ***:In Chinese patients after radical gastrectomy,X + allele of APOB gene is another risk factor for the development of gallstone besides the gallbladder motility disorder after surgery.

Heart valve diseases threaten human health. One reliable way to save lives of such patients is to replace the pathologically changed heart valves by artificial ones. Over 2 million patients have received LTI-carbon heart valve’s implantation. However, the thrombosis after the implantation is one of the difficulties that need to be solved. In order to improve the blood compatibility and security of mechanical heart valves, ion beam technology was used to modify the surface properties of the materials. The investigation results have been summarized in this paper.

BACKGROUND:The prognostic role of diabetes mellitus (DM) coexisting with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains *** clarify its impact on survival in HCC patients after curative treatments,a meta-analysis was *** SOURCES:Eligible studies were identified through multiple search strategies in the databases PubMed (MEDLINE),EMBASE,the Cochrane Library and ACP Journal Club between January 1950 and March *** studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria,and data were aggregated comparing overall survival and recurrence-free survival in HCC patients according to DM ***:The pooled hazard ratios (HRs) estimate for overall survival was 1.34.(95% CI,1.18-1.51;P4. (95% CI,1.00-2.18;P4.;P=0.182).Meanwhile,the coexistence of DM impaired overall survival in HCC patients with a small tumor burden (HR=1.63;95% CI,1.25-2.12;P<0.0001).CONCLUSION:HCC patients with coexisting DM have a shorter survival time and a higher risk for tumor recurrence after curative treatments,while the precise value should be defined in more clinical trials with consistent methodology,especially prospective studies.

The semicircular canals, composed of lateral, anterior and posterior canals in the inner ear, are the sensors of equilibrium during head rotation movements in the three-dimensional space. Semicircular canals are filled with endolymph confined by the cupula. The study of the relationship between endolymph flow and cupular deformation is important in revealing the semicircular canals biomechanical behavior. To date, there are few studies focusing on the transient endolymph flow and cupular deformation in response to a head rotation motion. The lateral semicircular canal is mainly responsible for the sense of the horizontal rotation movement. In order to figure out the intricate dynamics in the lateral semicircular canal during the head rotation motion, the time evolutions of both endolymph flow and cupular deformation are analyzed in this article by using a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction model. It is shown that the cupular deformation provides cues for understanding the physiology of sensing the head rotation.

Background: More than two decades have gone by since the early report of resection for small hepatocel- lular carcinoma (HCC), which resulted in improved prognosis of HCC. Objective: To review the past and recent data, and prospect the future in this field. Data sources: Literature and recent data from the Liver Cancer Institute of fudan university, Shang- hai, china. Data synthesis: 1232 patients with small HCC from the institute were analyzed between 1960-1984.(n= 107) and 1985-1999 (n=1125). The increase of li- mited resection rate from 69.5 % to 82.5 % contribu- ted in part to the increase of resectability from 76.6 % to 95.5 %, decrease of operative mortality from 2.4.% to 1.2 %, and improvement of 5-year sur- vival after resection (from 53.1% to 64.0%). The 5-year survival was higher after limited resection than after lobectomy, being 64.4.% versus 55.9%. The 5-year survival after resection was superior to that after cryosurgery and other regional cancer therapies (32.8 %). However, molecular studies found that biological characteristics were only slightly better in small HCC than in large HCC. Conclusions: Resection remains the treatment choice for small HCC with compensated liver function, while regional cancer therapies and liver transplanta- tion are alternatives for patients with incompensated liver function. Biological characteristics remain the leading factor influencing prognosis of small HCC.

Celiomesenteric trunk is a rare vascular anomaly, which has significant clinical implications. 3-di-mensional contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (3D CE MRA) is a new imaging modality, non-invasive , fast and easy to perform. We describe a patient with a common celiomesenteric trunk demonstrated by 3D CE MRA. METHODS: A 4.-year-old man was subjected to 3D CE MRA before transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma. The examination was performed on a 1.5T MR imager with a body coil. The contrast medium was gadopentetate dimeglumine. Source images from the hepatic arterial phase acquisition were reconstructed into MRA images. Intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography (DSA) during TACE was carried out 3 days after 3D CE MRA. RESULTS:On 3D CE MRA, a common trunk of the celiac and superior mesenteric artery was clearly depicted. The origin and course of the hepatic, splenic and superior mesenteric arteries were also visualized. These findings were confirmed by intra-arterial DSA. CONCLUSIONS: Celiomesenteric trunk can be well delineated by 3D CE MRA. The image is correlated precisely with that from DSA.

It is well documented that the glycosylation of E-cadherin is correlated with cancer metastasis, but whether E- cadherin could be core fucosylated remains largely unknown. We found that E-cadherin was core fucosylated in highly metastatic lung cancer cells while absent in lowly metastatic lung cancer cells. Since α-1,6 Fucosyltransferase (α-1,6 FucT) is known to catalyze the reaction of core fucosylation, we investigated the biological function of core fucosylation on E-cadherin by α-1,6 FucT targeted RNAi and transfecting α-1,6 FucT expression vector. As a result, calcium dependent cell-cell adhesion mediated by E-cadherin was strengthened with the reduction of core fucosylation on E- cadherin after RNAi and was weakened with the elevated core fucosylation on E-cadherin after α-1,6 FucT over expression. Our data indicated that α-1,6 FucT could regulate E-cadherin mediated cell adhesion and thus play an important role in cancer development and progression. Computer modeling showed that core fucosylation on E-cadherin could significantly impair three-dimensional conformation of N-glycan on E-cadherin and produce conformational asym- metry so as to suppress the function of E-cadherin. Furthermore, the relationship between the expression of core fucosylated E-cadherin and clinicopathological background of lung cancer patients was explored in lung cancer tissue of patients. It turns out to demonstrate that core fucosylated E-cadherin could serve as a promising prognostic indicator for lung cancer patients.
